North Devon Spearfishing

Hi there I'm from north Devon and wondered if anyone can explain the water at the moment we have had dry weather with no surf yet the clarity is still terrible it was the same on the south coast. Seems to be some small green discs suspended in the water I wondered is this phytoplankton or something? Any advice would be great also how long will it hang around?

I think you are referring to the May Bloom. It is late this year and is staying late. I expect it will clear over the next two weeks or so.

Cheers thought that might be something like that. with the sudden change in temperature and sun. Thanks for your help.

Hey guys,
Anybody been in recently? I had a look at the sea today, the vis still looks rubbish!
Did anybody have any success in that clear spell a few weeks back?

As soon as I want to take up spear fishing the water goes like soup!

Might have to dust off the rods lol.

Yep, somes up N Devon spearing! I hit it hard when it cleared. Its been about 6 years since we had it that good. Best fish I took was 7lb Bass. Also picked up a Sole, which is only my 2nd. I wonder how frequent they are as I rarely see them.

When its good here I try and dive every day as it will not last. Good luck. Be ready!

Thanks for the reply Pav. Nice bass too! I know of a couple places where they are rod caught that big reasonably often, hopefully I'll get a dive round there when its clear.

What would you say is the average visibility round here? And how clear does it get?
Guessing from fishing, I would say ~ 30ft is about the best? Although quite rare haha.
How much success do you get in say 3m vis?

Thanks

Wurz

I got out twice during that clear period.

First night had bass 12lb 3oz 8.5, and 4 others around 7lb.

Second night my mate had a 9lber and we had pkenty of 6-7lb fish.

We searched out the more schecluded spots (walked a fair few miles) but it was worth it.

I put a report up in the dorset thread last month. No mention of my exact loscations though im afraid.

Wow cracking haul of fish that!

I know you all have your favourite places you keep quiet about, but may I ask if that was north Devon or not?

I'd be chuffed wih one of those fish!

Regards

Wurz

EDIT: sorry I've just noticed it was Dorset.

It was from north devon that I got them...but I posted it in my local dorset thread.

Hi all,

I will be in Woolacombe mid October and would hope to get out for a few dives. I know nothing at all about the area, so could someone give me a couple of pointers where to head, or better still hold my hand?

Cheers

Paul

hi all - planning a bit of a session out of appledore on the weekend with the boat. Does anyone have a vis report for the Croyde area or know if there are any fish being caught?

Maybe the triggers have turned up by now?

Cheers.

The vis round any of the beaches is still poor from the rain silt a few weeks back. I looked into deep water yesterday off exmoor and the vis was Ok by North Devon standards but not overly good.
Not sure what's being caught though.

Wurz

The vis is poor in N devon, but some spots are doable-1-3m vis.

I pulled out this 10lber last week.

Always impressive to see a bass bigger than the speargun used to get it ;)

Hey all - hows the vis looking in North Devon - was hoping these Easterlies would be clearing it up enough for a session on Sunday...

Any vis reports from North Devon lads working down there for the rest of the week.

You'll be extremely lucky to get vis above 1-2m. your best bet for vis would be illfracombe area; but still 'iffy'.

N Devon on it's day offers fantastic spearing, but it's one of those places that you need to put in the hours, search out inaccessible spots and be willing to swim a good few miles in poor vis. you will be very lucky to find both fish and vis.

Lee bay also offers a better chance off vis, but personally I've had little or no success here.

very difficult inaccessible marks off baggy point can produce triggers. Access on baggy can be extremely dangerous, so be careful and dont do it alone.

combe martin beach would be your safest and likeliest place to hold vis.

N Devon is best left to the local spearo / s as it is just way too unreliable on vis to justify ever traveling there.

oh,, there are resident sharks to be aware off too.

Goodluck.

Hi,

Really new to spearfishing, randomly decided to sell all my carp gear and take it up pretty much just from watching a few of my mates go pro videos. Only been out once in lee bay, visibility was very poor but still really enjoyed it and can see myself getting hooked. Still need to buy weights as found out this was very necessary. Don't have any one to go with/ show me good spots. Would be interested in travelling to hartland area maybe for better vis and I've had some really nice fish on lures there. Anyone keen to show me the ropes. Tell me more about these sharks!!haha. I know revealing spots is a no go so maybe pm me. Would be interested in getting out throughout the winter too. I have some in mind from shore fishing. Any advice to help me get me started would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hursty
