North Wales,The Llyn and Anglesey 2015

Where's the sympathy for me and my suit?

I feel sorry for you mate - I lost my mask & snorkle on the second day of our trip - was properly p*ssed off.

On the last day I went back at low tide to look for it - low and behold, there it was, three days later, half buried in the sand between some rocks, not 20 yards from where I lost it - such a satisfying feeling!

Where's the sympathy for me and my suit?

I keep checking ebay...hoping for a good deal on a well maintained, polo sub wetsuit.

(Fingers crossed though mate... I don't suppose you've tried phoning the pub there or any of the other local businesses?)

I've called the local cafe, pub and parlour and no one's seen it. What was rather tantalising is that I called the cafe that own the parlour again today, the girl who answered said "I'll just ask for you", I could then hear her say "Oh really" to one of her colleagues, which as you can imagine got me all fizzy. She then came back on the phone and said that they'd not seen anything.

Balloon well and truly popped!

On another note, I'll be in Abersoch for this coming weekend with a large bunch of none diving friends, however, I will be getting in at some point. Can someone PM me some pointers on where's worth trying in this area? Ta

Anyone had any joy lately? I got in the water around Anglesey last night for a quick dip after work. Vis was very poor at a hazy 4m, coincidentaly I saw around 60 bass. Lots of schoolies but a couple of decent ones thrown in. I only managed one and a small pollock, missed one and didn't take a shot at one when I should have. Has anyone found they like the murky waters a bit more than when its clear?

Also, any of you guys suffer from hayfever? With this hot weather mines going mental and I have a feeling by the end of the week my sinuses are going to stop me from diving. Any secret remedies out there? Cheers.

Went out with Ian yesterday, we took out his little boat and challenged the big swell. Everything was fine for a couple of hours until the inevitable, the engine stopped working and we had to be rescued. Two weeks in a row for me. What the hell! Anyway we left the car and the boat at a car park and went from shore for a short session. Combined haul below. Vis was crap and big swell but we were there.

With all these boats breaking, do you think there would be enough interest to run a guided commercial boat? I'm in the watersports business myself so have the knowledge on the boating side to do it and put the numbers into a business plan. I'm just wondering what the thoughts are on it in terms of people who would be keen?

Could look at running regular sessions for regular customers to make it as cheap as possible and then a guiding service for visitors to the area.

The risk is that people would come 2-3 times to get to know spots/learn and then will find another way to reach the same spots for free. In the past I was asked to take people out as a charter but never did. Now I certainly cannot anymore!

Yeah, I figured people would do that, but if I made it worth their while. Buying a RIB on a trailer, trailering it to the middle of nowhere, remembering to fill up the fuel, run it through before you use it to check it works etc etc. It's a lot of hassle, and done right, I think it could work. Being able to put people on the fish, for a reasonable price, given the conditions. Etc, etc. There are quite a list of reasons that you could put together. I mean the hassle of owning a RIB that you don't use that much. And being available 7 days a week.

Just wondering in your current situation, with a broken engine, does it sound like an attractive option? If I could make it work to persuade you to do it then everyone else would surely follow?

It's a nice idea but honestly, in North Wales, it wouldn't work - there are too few people and you'd never turn a profit.

I don't mean to be rude but unless you've been spearing North Wales waters for a very long time, your chances of 'putting people on the fish' with any type of reliability is precisely zero. North Wales spots, especially the Llyn, are far too changeable - there are very few spots that guarantee fish every time.

The spots that do are normally very shallow and only fishable for small periods at high tide or very deep and lets face it, un-diveable by your average spearo who's used to pootling around in a few feet of water shooting at whatever is stupid enough to swim by. I assure you, if Dario took a boat load of average North Wales spearos out to Pollock Heaven and dropped them off in 12m+ water, I don't think they'd have a great time.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a spearo boat that could take me out to epic, hard to reach spots, I just don't think it's a realistic business opportunity.

I kind of have to agree with Bro . Also I think insurance /liability could be a problem . Dive boats that cater for scuba are easier as you can specify competency with something like the PADI or BSAC qualifications and I guess this makes the insurance man happy ,plus their is usually a dive leader and the trip is an event for a registerd club with instructors etc so you are putting a fair amount of liability with them after they are off the boat . It is harder to measure this competency for us, obviously AIDA qualifications could be a stipulation but this would cut your prospective punters from a very small number to even smaller, and even then without buddying being implemented strictly or dedicated safety divers present, at least someone in the water in charge of the divers , if there ever was an accident , im pretty sure the courts would look to prosecute the operator. Also no one is going to book even a week in advance in this country , the weather is too changeable most of the time. Add to this you only really have 6 months tops of the year , weekends mainly , when you have bookings and the weather is right . It would take a while to get 6grand back on a rib after taking off staffing ,launching fees ,fuel ,insurances.

My current situation is: deep shit! :D

For me it would be attractive if I could come for free and put my knowledge of North Wales.

Plus to justify the cost you'd need a few people and I don't think having a relatively high number of spearos in the same area would be a great idea, if you spread them out then you then have the problem of trying to keep an eye on and not losing someone.
