On my recent So Cal trip, I found a pretty good SCUBA mask and a spark-plug and Roan found a weight-belt w/ 25# of weight (in a rather chaotic assortment of individual weights, I might add).

With a little more diligence, I suppose that we could eventually assemble an entire boat and some SCUBA outfits.

...what about...

Hey Pez,
---You forgot about the gaffe you found floating at the kelp beds outside Boomers!!
---You could be right about the boat assembly

Nice catch

Right you are! Still, I was really hoping that it was a golf-club tossed by a frustrated Torrey Pines golfer :D

Adrian those metal plates are two halves of a boat winch (either for anchor or sail sheets) the spiky hole is for the crank handle, and there should be a drum for the rope that separates the 2 plates.

Hi Will,
This seems right. The pictures are actually of the same plate, one is the reverse. There are sailing boats where I found that. Hopefully for the owner, the rest of the winch stayed on board since I didn't find any other part.

thanks,
Adrian

It's obvious someone was teaching a cow to fish; pure frustration.....a la'..... "Never try to teach a pig to sing....frustrates you and annoys the pig"...Daisy the cow threw away the fishing equipment, shot her teacher (hooves)....drove to Canada....and disposed of the murder weapon at Ansell Point!

I wasn't freediving (scuba) but last week the cumlitive total for the boat on the first dive was one small lake rod & reel (me) at 50', one nice ocean rod & reel at 100', one mask, one dive light, & one snorkel, maybe more I forget, all at one site (Catalina). Must have been one heluva party?:duh

In 1998 off the croatian coast I happened to stumble upon some amphorae during a night dive. The very next day the coast guard was at the spot to confiscate the lot.

What else... all sorts of diving gear, fishing tackle, ammunition, a wooden dugout canoo (broken in half), a PC monitor, a full cola can which I tried to drink under water (didn't manage).
By the way, does anyone know how one should go about drinking softdrinks under water??? (I'd love to learn.)

Cheers

Lynn

Don't know about open cans, but you can bring stuff to drink underwater in baby bottles. My scuba club celebrate new years underwater - with champagne!

Lynn,
You gotta blow into the can.. push air from your cheeks into the can.. that way you get a mouth full from the can. Remember to keep your lips sealed to the can otherwice you'll end up with saltycoke or oceanspraycoke.. or what ever..

safe drinking!

I found some amphoras and pieces of pottery - our part of the Black sea is full with such artifacts since it always has been a trade route.
Cannonballs
3 anchors - one of the was really big and really old - you can hardly recognize what it is. That's why I've passed by it 50 times without noticing. We tied a plastic float to it and for three years already I see people diving to see it.
The most idiotic Czech or Hungarian (no offence to the fine countries) diving knife from the 70's - all steel (no plastic at all) , heavy as a war hammer and really, really blunt...
All kinds of other junk...
The weirdest of it all was a yellow rubber duck floating by me like Neptune forgot it when he was taking a bath... Kracked me up.

And the strangest thing a young cormoran found 2 years ago was me, tied to a very promising dead (speared) seabass at some 5 meters depth. You should have seen him trying to get to the surface as fast as possible when I turned to see what's pulling my stringer. I almost drowned of laughter!

At around 10 meters deep I found a sand mussel (big solitary mollusc that can grow up to 50 cm long) it was half buried in the sand. I pulled it out and it had a .22 bullet lodged in the shell???????????????????????

This has been the strangest thing I have found by a longshot.

I think I have found golfballs at every place I've ever dived! Other than that, I found 3/4 of an old LP, and lots of pottery (mostly metal) in and around shipwrecks. Found my own snorkel when I was sure it was gone (3-5 feet vis) while diving with Vince in a quarry near here. Never recovered anything other than the golfballs though!

It appears that everyone finds golf balls. I have about eight at home from various dive spots. Some quite far offshore. Weirdest thing is there isn't even a golf course in Gibraltar HEHEHE

I regullarly see ancient amphora everywhere but its illegal to get them out of the sea without goverment permission. This seson i saw really huge one. It was burried in sand but the mouth was open. It was bigger than my head.

We even find golf balls in our local lake. Maybe the golfers using the grass for putting practice need a lot more practice:)

The most interesting thing I found while freediving was an old fishing net (I obviously havent found anything really cool yet) .

It was tangled up with nylon rope and was washing back and forth in a cavern in about 4m of water on the back of an island.

The rope holding the net down was getting quite frayed and I assumed that it would eventually work it's way free of the rocks and possibly wash out into the ocean.

So I cut it free and hauled the whole mess back to shore with me to dispose of. The swim took twice as long as usual because of the drag and I got some of the wierdest looks when I got back to shore and slung this pile of old slimy net over my shoulder and walked up the beach.

The people on the beach probably thought I was a really bad fisherman....all that net and not a single fish

Those golf balls.... well I remember hitting them with baseball bat to the forrest right next to our house.. they'd bouunce around for a while or fly really far!
Kids do funky stuff.. I remember my cousin told me that he goes to the rocks where he can see the beacon and hits golf balls towards it. (the beacon is far at sea so no danger of actually hitting the thing) and he does this with her girlfriend.. so there you go. that's how they end up everywhere in the sea..:);)
