OT: word 'Freediver' in Chinese/japanise simbols?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
屏息潜水员 (bing3xi2qian2shui3yuan2) seems like the best option so far.

I'm wondering, isn't there a breath hold diving tradition within Chinese history? I know there were spunge divers in ancient Greece. In Japan and Korea they have their Ama tradition, freediving for seaweeds. Isn't there something similar within Zhong Guo, where we can find a title for freedivers?

I know it's a lot to ask, but personally I'd like to get it right, before I go out and get myself a tatoo or something...

I was looking for tattoo inspirations and came upon this thread.

Anyway, doesn't Japan have a freediving team? What's their symbol for freediving?

I'm chinese but can't read chinese... comes with being a british born town bunny...

Ok, I have tried to run some lines from http://t-mugen.com/jp/apnea.html through http://babelfish.altavista.com/ :

The line:
アプネア (フリーダイビング)
is translated as:
アプネア (free diving)
(Babelfish has its limitations...)

What I could imagine is that the parentheses is the literal phrase "free"+"diving", while the four unknown signs could be the phonetic version of the latin "apnea" (a-pe-ne-a, or something).

That's Japan, it seems that they too haven't their own definition of freediving. I think we're still stuck.

Re: OT: word 'Freediver' in Chinese/japanese simbols?

Suddenly I found www.bjdivers.org (Beijing Divers).

In their forums I found a discussion (http://www.bjdivers.org/newedition/docs/forum_replyview.php?topicid=228) about where to find training info (I think  I'm clinging on to Babelfish here!):

Anyway in the above post I found: 自由潜水
Babelfish translates this to "Free Diving"

This is aparently what a local diver uses to describe freediving: The literal version. That aughta be Canon, if anything ??

Case solved?

Freediving: 自由潜水 (zi4you2qian2shui3)

Freediver: 自由潜水员 (zi4you2qian2shui3yuan2)

Or, if one wants to go traditional:
自由潛水者

(Go get them tatoos!!! :vangry )
