Oversized pools

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Wow! Looks cool. Can you post the name and/or the address of the facility?

The name of the complex is "Parque Deportivo Puerta de Hierro" address:Carretera del Pardo 1000,28035 Madrid.
Rafa

I found some referrences on the web, but surprisingly very little, and practically no photos (at least no interesting ones). Is it so new that there is no real info yet anywhere? That's very strange at such an important complex and the biggest pool in Europe. It even looks like the complex does not have any website at all - that's even stranger. I bet that an hour or two of maintenance costs more than they would need for a nice professional website. It's a shame they did not made any - it looks like it deserves it!

This is a cheesee post, but it is a large pool.
And if you like to dive next to sharks behind glass, it is for you.
Or, if you like to pay several hundred dollars to swim with dophins, then it works too.

Ah, I forgot about this one. Jorg told me about it earlier and posted it on his Shark-Freediving blog, so I am adding it here now too. The lagoon at San Alfonso del Mar in Chile, with the length of 1km, seems to be the biggest pool in the world. It is a pool with artificially filtered and circulated ocean water. More details on Jorg's website or at San Alfonso del Mar.

TRUX, that pool is about 10 miles south of my beach house. I have never been in it, the ocean, just by it, is more interesting:t

look at this, apparently it is the officially the "worlds biggest pool":

I found another good adept for this category. This one is a candidate for the world's deepest pool. I am not entirely sure about the real depth, but it looks like it is 36.2 m.

From Super-Kamiokande - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :
Super-Kamiokande is a neutrino observatory in Japan. The observatory was designed to search for proton decay, study solar and atmospheric neutrinos, and keep watch for supernovas in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Super-K is located 1,000 m underground in the Mozumi Mine, Japan. The detector consists of a cylindrical stainless steel tank 41.4 m tall and 39.3 m in diameter enclosing 50,000 tons of ultra-purified water. The tank volume is divided by a stainless steel superstructure into an inner detector (ID) region that is 33.8 m in diameter and 36.2 m in height and outer detector (OD) which consists of the remaining tank volume. Mounted on the superstructure are 11,146 photomultiplier tubes (PMT) 20 inches in diameter.

The photos below show the detector tank in different stages of filling:

If you are traveling in the neighborhood of the facility, you may try ringing up the guys there. I bet that they sometimes drop a key or another object in the tank by accident, and may need a skilled freediver for picking it up :D Just be wary if you have the habit to purge you bladder when diving - they might be pretty pissed off if you piss in their 50 000 tons of ultra-purified water!

thats awesome trux. it's almost ethereal.

Another one in Plymouth, UK - the Tinside Lido. I did not find the dimensions, but it definitely looks bigger than usual pools (EDIT: measuring it in Google Earth, it looks like it is only 50m in diameter, but I keep it here anyway):

I am also adding a link and a photo of the OHMSETT facility (oil spill response research) from Parapsycho's post, because the ones he used expired and do not work anymore:

OHMSETT
Facility
Facilities_new.jpg
The length is 203 m, depth 3.4 m, and width 20 m. It would be probably not quite pleasant freediving in the pool during oil spill tests. And I doubt it it would be much healthier once the spill is cleaned up.

And yet another record holding pool. This one claims to be the biggest indoor swimming pool ever made. The "Ocean Dome" is located in Miyazaki, Japan, and measures 300 m x 100 m. Besides it, it is 500 m above the sea level.

EDIT: However, the dimensions 300x100 m are those of the building (38 m tall), not the actual pool, or better told an artificial lake. From the photos it is apparent the pool is quite smaller than that.

I just found this interesting article listing 9 different water parks claiming to be the biggest ones in America:

World's biggest indoor waterparks- Largest indoor water parks in Wisconsin Dells, America, Vegas, Canada, N. America, Kalahari, Wilderness

They do not speak about biggest pools, rather biggest waterparks, but some of them have some over-sized swimming pools too. For example the World Waterpark in Edmonton, Canada used to be listed in Guinness book of records as the biggest indoor swimming pool:
WEMall.jpg world%27s%2Bbiggest%2Bindoor%2Bswimming%2Bpool.jpg
They also speak about the above mentioned Japanese waterpark, but claim Germany has even a bigger one, in the largest freestanding building in the world (former Zeppelin hangar): Tropical Islands in Brand. The bigger pool in the park measures 3000 m², the size of four Olympic swimming pools.

And yet another one today! This one is still under condition, but should be opened in October 2008.

A luxurious hotel Mardan Istanbul Palace is under construction in southern province of Antalya's Aksu region, Turkey. It is expected to surpass world's most luxurious hotel Burj al-Arab in Dubai. Many photos from the construction site are available here: Mardan Palace Hotel travel pictures: pictures Mardan Palace Hotel, find travel pics for Mardan Palace Hotel

The swimming pool, which will resemble the Istanbul Strait –Bosphorus, will be 24,000 m² large and will be the world's second biggest swimming pool. It will have two bridges connecting the two sides of the pool. The bridges resemble the Galata Bridge masterminded by Leonardo Da Vinci.

ah... its a shame the gasometer is only 13m deep, somehow (not reading the german) I thought it was deeper.

What is nice is that apparently it has some submerged elements, an artificial reef, an old car chassis and the wreck of a yacht.

I'd like to try out the Deep Water Towing Tank of the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands. Its 252 meters long, 10,5 meters wide and 5,5 meter deep. It's not heated though.....

Deep Water Towing Tank

This one is not a diving pool, though just an aquarium tank, but with its depth of 25 meters and the fauna & flora in it, it would make a beautiful place for freedving! Did any of our German members ever attempted to get in for some show or demonstration? I bet it would be a great experience.

The 25 meters deep and 12 meters wide SeaLife AquaDom aquarium tank in Berlin, Germany:

oh wow!!! that's beautiful! would make a great kelp and training tank. i wish they would build something like that here.

I've had a hamburger there rofl

It is seriously cool - heaps of life in there and some great fish. Back around early 2007 Martin Muller was trying to get some freedivers in there for a promotional thing but I don't think they were allowed in the end. Real bugger that, cause it's awesome looking. It's in a hotel foyer and you can pay for an elevator ride through the middle.

Cheers,
Ben
