Records, records, records!

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I just hope Martin stands well all those deep dives - the DCS and narcosis bill the organism pretty hard, so the two weeks of repetitive dives to 100+ depths with pretty fast ascends, are certainly quite hard, tiring, and risky, despite the careful post-dive deco. Wishing Martin good health, safe dives, and nice success!

Trux, I have been told that Martin is not feeling any narcosis. Maybe due to the commercial diving he has done?

I think the 100+ dives are important to get the body used to the increased pressures. As near as I can tell, he is comfortable and feeling well. His record attempts start in 4 days. But he may very well take the 21st off and I understand it's a play day for the crew as Martin is not diving today. So that leaves 2 days of solid practice.

The diving there sounds awesome. I tried to convince my wife to let me fly over there, but the $1600 airfare did not "fly" well. I told her I would sleep on the beach and I didn't have to eat...

Martin did today in training 119.8m. With a mask, not a pipe mask, but a standard Sphera (if I see well). SP in 10 seconds. Dive time 3:22. No narcosis symptoms.

There are also some nice videos and photos on his website at Martin ?t?pánek - world record 2009

BTW, if anyone of you is in the area right now, and wants to come to see Martin, David Cani wrote this invitation on Martin's website:
Hi Everyone - especially those in the Sinai Peninsula vicinity,

If any of you are interested in visiting us in or out of the water, come down for a chat or just give us some presents :o) You are welcome to contact me anytime to find out the days scheduling or other info. This is a great opportunity to view first-hand Martin's progress as we descend closer to world record depths :-) Everyone's welcome and of course there's no cost involved!!!

DUDE! He CRUSHED his Beta Oceanic! I see he has stepped from the Model 1 to the Glide also. I am sitting here wondering what his potential depth really is.

I need to ask one more time if my wife will let me fly over. *Brings up Orbitz in another window*

As a student of Martin's, I am super proud to see him doing so well right now.

I've just checked Martins site, and I must say it looks very professional!
Martin himself looks very strong as well, and I hope his organisation runs more or less autonomous so Martin can put his energy into diving deeper than the current incredible records.

What Records will he break? - How deep? - Which one first?

Do we have some local spies in Sharm El Sheikh that may want to report in here on DB on Martins endeavours?

What's up with the handsome girl in the photo's?

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

hi Kars - our pal IL Diver is being modest and not telling all of you kind folks that he is the one that developed Martin's website!

IL Diver produced martinstepanek.com :t and he did a great job.

It's amazing to see what all of the focus, discipline, and internal ease can bring to martin's performance.

I am rooting for him - i hope Martin smashes more than just that Oceanic gauge :martial I'd love to see him take all 3 of his announced WR attempts.

it's a very exciting month for sure.

cheers,

kp

Thanks, Jorg! Yes, I searched the AIDA's website too for the details, but did not find it there either. How did you discover it? I do not see it linked anywhere from within the menu.

BTW, on the main record announcements page, I see just the attempts of Herbert and Martin, so apparently Musimu and Mifsud are going on to play their childish game of ignoring AIDA international, and will likely do their attempts without the official supervision of AIDA International. I wonder why it is so difficult for them, when for others it apparently poses no real problem.

Musimu has got something exciting lined up for September, to be done here in the UAE. I have all the details but waiting for go ahead from him to announce it.
;)

I would like to see herbert's face when he saw Martins training dive to 119.. It was so simple for him to achieve such a depth..he is very...very..very strong!

Yep, the 'fight' for deep is getting much tougher this year! With new challenges and barriers to mount demanding new approaches and better technique combined with better coverage it's getting much hotter!

Knowing that Musimu plans a tandem sled descend with a female freediver, I am curious to see the announcement. And if Sands is involved, Patrick may get a wilder ride than he imagines. I wonder though whether the bottom camera video will be publishable on unrated websites.

Word I hear is Martin is taking a day maybe two off before the attempts start. I hope that works out for him.

I'm on the edge of my seat to hear planned depths. Moving from the Model 1 to the Glide seems to have given Martin a boost. No doubt his technique is strong. I vote that he hits 130m, maybe 135m :)

I'm really interested in the CNF record. since they took that one from him before. It would be great to see him push that one down a little deeper, not just break it, but put a few meters on it.

My plans did not work out to fly over there. My wife squawked about money and bills or something...

I don't have any backstage info, but I would guess that although Martin is certainly capable of doing a pretty important improvement of the current record, I would bet he adds just a meter or two. Being a business man, I think he does not want to make it too difficult for others (and for himself too), to break the records soon again. Having frequent records is much more fun than waiting for new ones for years, And it also triggers more interest from sponsors, so why finishing the race prematurely?

But then again, I may be completely wrong :)

Simply capturing the CWT record would be awesome. Much respect to Herbert for putting it at 120, as nobody thought it would drop like that from the previous 114m.

So let's not get carried away and see what happens!

I have no idea what he can or can not hit or why he would hit a depth now or later. I understand the back and forth nature of the game combined with the risk. But also to consider is age and "prime". When will a diver be past their prime and no longer able to go quite as deep? So when do they show what they can do as a last hurrah? I'm far from saying Martin is near his end of diving. It's just a question. For business you may want to keep it close, but to show what you can really do...

If the records are for the sponsors, then keep the records, I want to see what divers can do. I want to see them challenging themselves and others. A record should be a special thing, not something traded back and forth to get your name out there 3 times in a year for stepping the record up one meter. It should be an event.

Afterall, Herbert just pushed it a good distance a month ago... He could have done 115m and then a 116m... But then look how far from the potential we are. Next year would have finally seen 120m. Now we might see 125m next year, or if pushed, maybe 140m or more?

This is just my opinion and not worth a drop of sea water.

I think the records are not FOR the sponsors, BUT THANKS to the sponsors .....
Im not sure, but probably an event like this is quite expensive .... Safety divers, AIDA judges, Air tickets, hotel, etc etc etc. and also thanks to the sponsors the athlete can dedicate part of the years time to training .
So i accept it as part of the game, the 1 mt world record breake, and the WC title trade during the year, so all of them can get their portion of the cake.

That's where I differ on 'the cake'. I understand it, but it's not what I want to see (personally). I know what is happening, I know why it happens, but is it right? A world record is a special event. Having it broken repeatedly cheapens it. How long until people and sponsors say, bah, records are broke all the time, it's not a big deal.

As for expenses, I know they spend a ton of money to get the safety there and all. That is irrelevant to the argument though. They could do a record dive at a competition as well. It is inherently more $ if you set up a record event. But there is more publicity in an event purposely done for a record.

What I'm saying is, if a record gets set and held for 3 years, the diver did something impressive. If the record climbs 1m every 4 months, I don't care about it. William Trubridge pushing the CNF record up 1m at this last event, not impressive to me, how many times in the last year or two was it set? Martin 2 years ago did 82 or 83? Now it's 88. The potential is likely so much greater. Herbert put a stamp on the CWT record, that was way more impressive in my mind, it was a special dive.

Also, according to the FII newsletter, it looks like there may be a goal of first man to 400 ft, self propelled on one breath. That would be 122m.

Well I think this is typical discussion between person who belive in true spirit of sport and someone who accepted fact that in our type top level sport is more or less about money. But we are talking about freediving and still freediving is really special case. Its small sport so mostly even if you win some cup you win it for sake of sport. Freediving is not really rewarding money wise but on other side we get something much better than money. I always admired true sport heroes so in this case I agree with ILDiver. Even if its from buisness point smarter to do small steps like Sergey Bubka did and cash more money/publicity.. But most of us - cyber warriors :) could say whatever we want because we will mostlikely never be in that situation.. down there in 120m to decide if 1m is enough or not..

I like athletes to push themselves as far as they can at the specific moment.
I understand that for the event to succeed it would be wise to do the small increment record first, like Herbert did at the Vertical Blue competition, but after this I love to see athletes to push their limits, just like Herbert did with his impressive 120m CW dive. Obviously pretty close to Herberts personal limit for the moment in this discipline. I respect that VERY much, showing your limits to the world.
William Truebridge also in my opinion has dived also very close to his current limits with his CNF WR of 88m.
So in a way many freedivers are indeed pushing it, and not following the 'Sergey Bubka' approach, and I commend them for having the courage and purity of heart to do so!

And Semi, maybe not to many will be able to do WR's, but much more are able to do NR's, club records, competition wins, etc. They too have choices to make.
I for one will happily employ the 'Herbert Nitch' approach this weekend in North Germany first Hemmoor CNF only competition facilitating two starts.

Kars
