Hahahaha! Well i'm not sure beer mugs is quite appropriate for a freediving forum - no matter what my preference is.

Hey man...Yesterday I wrote a report about this rep stuff and BLAM it was gone! I need to learn to COPY so I can PASTE if something goes haywire!

Anyways rep is really no big deal...Besides...Half the rep I get gets taken away anyhow!!! If I did'nt have rep points removed I'd have rep coming outta my eyeballs. There are lots of people on here that deserve MORE rep and other's who have tons who it's questionable how much or if they even dive...I myself have been "accused" of being a "CYBER DIVER"...Yup....That DID piss me off.. Or "snorkler". But now I just laugh at stupid remarks like that...Pfffft...Cyber diver!!!! Ha! What a joke.

Some Rep I got for diving reports/spearfishing/pics of my catch/harvest...

Some I got for pictures and family stuff..

A few points for jokes..

Some for recipe's...

And LOTS of points for tellin' someone "how it is" after they've got all wound up and verbally attacked me or someone else....But I always go too far and end up basically verbally castrating them...Then my rep gets taken AWAY if it (the rep points) were involved AT ALL with "keepin' it real"!

Sorry but there has GOTTA be atleast one "rebel" or "bad boy"
in the bunch! :koHelps keep some of the more "outspoken" in line, I'd like to believe!


So all you people who've given me rep in the past for "sticking up" for myself or someone else...THANK YOU...BUT...Them points got taken away EVERY time...Hint hint! :king

Hey, bgill, how do I take your points away!? If it is possible, you should try beating Spago's 500 reputation with negative 500, and each time you see he sends reputation to someone, you could spill your minus five hundreds on him to eliminate it. That would make lovely wars here on DB!

I don't feel strongly about it one way or the other, but I question the value of rep. I tend not to even think about it until one of these "what does rep mean" threads comes along, and then I get refreshed on what to click to see comments.

If someone agrees or disagrees with something I wrote, why not just respond with a public post? Or if the person feels that his comment should be private, there is always a PM.

I guess that leaves rep as a measure of popularity. But does anyone actually alter his/her posting in order to please more people or become more popular? I may be insecure, but I'm not quite so insecure that I'm concerned with my rep points. And I doubt that a person who tends to post offensively or make personal attacks will be deterred by the thought that he will lose rep.

I happen to be aware of people here who have huge rep because they are genial or seem wise but who have been diving about twice in their entire lives. I don't begrudge them their geniality points, but I come to a diving board to exchange information on diving, so rep doesn't represent what they can offer in the way of diving information.

So while I'm not trying to say that rep should be eliminated, I just don't see much value in it.

I think it's just the moderators who can give negative reputation. Perhaps some is taken away with a warning too? In the "old" days everyone could hand it out, I always thought it was a good way of self moderation except it used to be given anonymously which used to upset those who got a page full of abuse after a bad or even not so bad post rofl

Well, one reason I prefer using the rep for thanking or congratulating is that I dislike "me-too" threads - if everyone thanked publicly for good information, the threads would be just full of the "me too" thanking posts with otherwise no informative value. Well, if I have something important to tell in the thread, then I certainly post and append the thanks to it too, but if I have otherwise nothing interesting to tell, I prefer sending it privately by the Rep message, keeping so the noise-to-signal ratio on the forum low.

I also do not like using PM for this purpose - it is too intrusive - a PM, unlike the rep message, goes into the private sphere when not necessary, and creates a pressure for an answer which may not be always welcome especially if it happens too often (and fills the mailbox).

OK, those are good points regarding the system as a way to make private comments, and I agree now that you made me think about it. I still question the value of the points though. When I read a post by someone, it doesn't occur to me to notice how much rep he has, and I don't think it would be of much value if I did.

Yes, that's right - the points are worthless, especially for anyone coming here regularly who knows most of the regular members. But for a newbie it may serve as a certain indicator - if he sees a discussion or an argument he may incline to trust more the people well respected by others, and he may expect that the reputation points reflect it (and to certain degree they indeed do).

But otherwise, of course, I agree that the reputation is much more just for the fun (and good for the private comments). That's why I proposed replacing the scale icons

I think the rep tool is a handy way of thanking someone for info etc. As long as it never ends up being traded ( ill give you my fins if you give me your rep points) i am happy with it.
