I have yet to hear about some fatal accident at freediving with proper and real buddy safety system involved..... In contrary, at spearfishing, recreational freediving and snorkeling, there are several hundreds of fatal accidents every year.
This is a sobering reminder that it's not just enough to be there - we have to be effective, vigilant and prepared buddies.
I could probably do with some rescue practice... Thankfully I've never had to do it for real.
But I have more than once seen, as I return to the surface, my "buddy" off in the distance and happily finning away from me towards some more interesting object!
