Uh, I forgot the local wines: Vermentino (white, better cool) and Cannonau (a stout red). And Porceddu (roasted pork).
Waiting for your report!

I Just came back from Sardegna on 4 May. The weather was great but the water was still cold so fish were tough to find. We mainly fished the outside of Stintino. Even fishing from boat with one of the best local spearfishers (Antonello Gadau- aka-Lupensub) we were only able to take home a stringer of Cefali, Mostella, Saraghi, and scorfani. We also saw some small Cernia (Grouper) but they were only aroud 2-3 kilos each so we decided to leave them for later. Our host saw some Dentice at around 30 meters but they did not want to cooperate. I'll be back in Sardegna for the first 2 weeks of July but up in Capo Testa (Santa Teresa di Gallura). CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
I'll Have to deal with fishing here in Rome area till then. Tomorrow should be good.
In the pic, I'm the one in the back left.
ciao!!

Heya, Sorry I haven't posted for so long. I went to Sardinia at the beginning of May...wow what a beautiful place! Baking sunshine all week which apparently is unusual then, as Calinitalia said, the water was a bit cold for the fish.
We were staying in Maristella, Porte Conte – a protected zone, so the hire car was invaluable. We spent most of the week hopping round the bays to the North.

We found some fairly decent sized fish off the rocks at Porticciolo. We drove south to Bosa hoping to find bays along the way but it was mostly steep cliffs. At one point I was perch high on a cliff face with a makeshift sun shelter of towels and t-shirts and my boyfriend had to climb down to go spearing!

Other sites said that previous years there had been huge numbers of jellyfish but we I didn't see even one.

When I've got a bit of time I'll post some useful photos.

Thanks for all your help/advice before I went.

Hey Blondie, glad you had a good trip. I'm still very keen to get out there as i had to delay my last planned trip :-(
looking forward to your photos...

ohhhhhhh just thinking of the great food and relaxed people brings back nice memories... clear waters too. I want to be there now..........

Hi Everyone,
I just got back from another trip to Sardegna. 11 days this time at Capo Testa (Santa Teresa di Gallura), rented a house right on the cliffs with Corsica in clear view, awesome. I did not get to fish as much as planned due to an accidental ear injury on the 3rd day of fishing :crutch. That put me out of commision for 4 days. Got lots of nice Sarago up to 1,2 kg and spigole (bass) up to 1,5 kg along with other various types of fish. Saw good numbers of Orate but they were very nervous. The water temp was nice and the thermocline was usually around 25 meters +-. We had a couple days of intense Mistrel winds which put this area off limits due to the high seas and strong currents that rise up due to the channel with Corsica (Bocche di Bonifacio). Saw a few nice Dentex +- 4 kg but they wouldn't come into range .
I hope to be back on the island in September and October but till then it's Lazio and Toscana.
Ciao!!!!!!!!

Well after having to abandon my plans for a sardinia trip last year, i'm now booked up for a trip this May
We're going to stay at Isola Rossa which i hope puts us in a good spot for spearfishing, photos, etc. also not too far from the golf course on the NE corner for the better half and my son, so we're all happy
Once again thanks to Spaghetti for the valuable info on the area, even if it took me an extra year...
One more question - do you need a license to spearfish there?
Capo Testa looks superb if the weather plays kind...
gonna have to find out about hiring a weight belt.

Great!
No in Italy you don't need a license for spearfishing in the sea: it's natural predation.
I'll keep you posted about Isola Rossa and Capo Testa soon as I gather some valuable info from the spearfishing community over here.
(learn this word and don't forget it: Vermentino) ;-)

Hi Jonny,

you will not need any licence for spearfishing in Italy. Every small town has at least one diving shop, you can ask about renting weights. I just bought 10k and left them there. I remember one year where it was difficult to get weights in August, they were just sold out.

I also found that you can find all equipment at good prices on the Island.

Thanks guys,
Spaghetti, here's a translation i got from babel fish:
"Vermentino is entire approximately the freschi and croccanti sapori of the tropical fruit. The palate is vibrating and zesty, very balanced with l' fine acidities and a fresh covering sappy." (free translators dont always work!!)
I'm sure we will look it up when we get there... [although i dont drink alchool any more :-( ]

Glad to here that you are finally going to get to Sardegna. Castelsardo is a very well known hot spot for Dentice, but in May they will probably still be quite deep. As for the area up around Capo Testa I can probably suggest some spots. At what depths do you usually fish and with what techniques, aspetto, cave etc.??? I was there last year at about the same time, and in the shallows (less than 8 meters)there was very little to shoot at, but then again the water was unusually cold. Some spots you will still find the Spigola or Sea Bass haunting the shallows especially in the presence of some turbulance in the water. You should also find nice Sarago up to 1KG + in 8 meters or more and in the shallows during turbulance.
I may also be there around that time, but either down around Stintino or on the other side of the Island at another friends house.
Let me know about the depths and hunting styles, Spaghetti can probably help too

Thanks for that Calinitalia, the pictures look good; i usually stay very shallow, less than 10m and generally less than 8m, however i am keen to get a bit deeper when i have the opportunity whilst there. no deeper than 20m for sure tho! Generally a combination of aspetto and fumbling along bumping into things ;-))
My main goal is to see some larger fish, even if i dont shoot them... i'll have my camera for some pictures too

How did your hols go in Sardinia? - I am going to be out there in August with the family staying in Costa Paradiso - would love to get some more local knowledge if anyone can PM me that would be great. I try mapping out the advice already given to see if any of the areas are near where we will be staying. Cheers, James

and I hope you'll have a happy holiday, James. As I specified above, Sardinia is not exactly my neck of the woods, but I still can gather some first hand info's for you from people I know over there.
Let's keep posted.

Dave as I once again specify I don't know so much of Sardinia, but the Sept/Oct period is very good in the upper Med:
1) less boats running above your head
2) still amberjack season. :martial

Thanks Spaghetti,
Will pack the 130cm for the Amberjacks then!!!
Am looking at flights as we speak as I am sold after just reading this thread!!
Anyone got any recommendations for hotels/ guesthouses etc. that are close to the good spearing spots?

Dave

Hey guys, sorry i just saw the recent questions on this thread! I will be at Isola Rossa on the north coast of Sardinia next week !!! so will let you have an update and some piccies after that.
FWIW we have booked with tomson and hired a car from alghero. Looking forward to it! can anyone tell me the itailian words for the weights we use? (Need to hire some when we get there)...
