Agreed Dave, raw fish is not something I wish to be consuming. Ed tried to feed me raw semi frozen bass the other day, after a token gesture nibble I got him to fry my bit!

Raw fish is just about acceptable if it is hidden in very hot sauce & surrounded with rice but seems a bit desperate not to cook it!

Ah, it's just Podge showing off his cat abilities, he'll be off for another walk soon :)

Raw scallop is most indefensibly the way forward for me! The first scolly of each session should be opened as you are floating back up and eaten live and raw in the water! The very spice of life as far as i am concerned.

The fantastic taste lingers on the tounge and makes you go that little bit deeper and longer looking for them.

As for getting them back to shore.. Podge and I did best part of half a mile swim out, a couple of hours diving and then a long old swim back in with a heavy bag creating lots of drag.. And enjoyed every second of it!

I am an odd Fu*ker at the best of times but I am of the idea that if you take the lives of many things ( 30 odd scollys ) then you need to give them a chance to repay the deed and the hard work, depth, duration, that i put into the swim and the diving is my way of giving them that chance.. Make any sense? :)

You an Odd F**ker, no who said that then, I don’t know where you get it from.rofl
As for the swim I’m not the fittest guy but I’d do it again in an instant.:)

Mart I love um cooked or not, but as for the washing up well what can I say, I’ll buy you a dish washer:):):)

Weather was too nice and the tide too big to not go in today!

Took a temporary body board float (got a better one in construction but you'll get more details of that later ;)) which was sooo much better than the tube float, and I could ride it in later on!

Anyway, also took the camera so enjoy Magpie's latest production:

Podge mate, don't stand for that :)

Look at all that viz! Jeez! How much fishing time do you get between the tides Magpie?

Very nice Tom - couldn't make it but thanks for the invite (some of us actually do some work in the States :) ... pah, flexitime... I'm just jealous ! ).

Looked at the forecast for Sunday and might break out the surfboard... 5 star surf from Magicseaweed... unheard of but rubbish for diving.

well done magpie!

amazing viz. and lovely still water! wana swap for a week? we have pea soup and a swell that would knock an elephant over... go on, you know you want to..

Try those scallops "cooked with lemon" that is, ceviche style: soak them in lemon juice (fresh please, not those whacked-out plastic lemon bottles!) finely chopped onion (red onion a nice touch) and finely cut fresh coriander..

same works great for cubed white fish (freeze first to kill some of the baddies), cut in about 1cm cubes.

in all cases a couple of hours soak is fine, server with hot buttered toast and a chilled white............:inlove

i hope you eat those orangy bits of the scallop too, all good stuff.

Fantastic vid Tom. Great catch too. A dozen scallops freediving in Guernsey is a tremendous effort.

Dave

Very cool Tom, we cooked some around my fire on the weekend.
Just placed the cleaned fish back in their shells with a knob of garlic-chilli=ginger butter & placed them around the fire drum.

If it ain't had heat it ain't been cooked Azapa ;). Portinfer tried to feed me some bass done that way recently...tried being the operative word.

Liking the sound of cooked in their shells with butter garlic and chilli though :p

Had to take this opportunity because it may be the last chance of the year with the weather thats on the way as Ed says.

Well Pastor the tide was slow until bang on low tide when it really picked up. Wasn't so bad a bit further into the bay but then there wasn't as many there! Having the anchored float was really useful as it showed exactly what the tide was doing and gave me a reference point to search around.

excellent reading!
Someday I may get the balls to try for some on our coast. We have a seasonal ban that just ended oct 31st. No such ban in Guernsey?
In guersey past two summers. Next time im bringing the suit ;)

Is that a tape measure you use anchored by the weight?

Ps id always sear scallops in hot hot pan with garlic, lemon, chilli and butter
