Sea Angling for Spearos

Interline style rods are very cutting edge in my opinion - not new though! I built my first one about 25 years ago? certainly before I had come across a cyclops! I think I still have it somewhere (you know how I store thing Maggers) I owned a cyclops casting rod at one time but they did not work that well as any leader knot would not fit down the end eye! This still applies with the modern versions of eyeless boat rods but when using braid is of little significance.

Mr.X,

I use an abu 6500 ct premium mag elite for surfcasting... I've seen jerkbaiters use 55's but it's mega beefy for regular baitcasting tho. The abu revo stx that magpie has is perfect for trigger grips. i use a little daiwa viento low profile nowaday's.

The rig i described is for kicking along the bottom, hence the short, stiff snood to preven the tangles that occur when you fish a paternoster of regular dimensions actively. fish it with a couple of pops on the tip or winds on the reel to disturb the substrate pause a little while before before moving off again... think of it like half lure half bait. flatties are quite predatory, I often take flounder on the fly... it's fun to sightfish them like trout.

I was looking through some sea angling magazines today, Total Sea Fishing magazine had a couple of articles that might interest forum members. There was one on fishing in Norway & another of kayak fishing for bass. Not very indepth but the pictures of the kayak fishing gear was interesting e.g. huge handline-style winder used for the thin anchor line & chain, drogues. Also, the suggestion of using a condom as a waterproof case for cellphone/VHF radio.

They had some interesting looking lures too, including a very slim one, like a Rapala Sliver but slimmer with, I think, just a single treble hook on the front half. Looks very sandeel like:hmm.

Amazing footage, although it looked like they could have harpooned them with a pointy stick as they swam next to & under their kayaks. I would like to see how they landed & dispatched them (and the bait/lure).

Visited Swanage in Dorset again this weekend. The fishing store had no worms:( (Sold out on Sat. probably due to the glorious weather they had down there). So we got some frozen sandeels & frozen squid (from San Francisco I believe - not very green -- I think the quid round Britain are probably a big big for convenient use as bait). The others tried the bait on an AtomicHaggis-style flattie rigs (were going to ledger it but the flattie rigs were at hand) while I decided to try out some of my lures -- I know, not really bass lure fishing time of year but it was what grabbed me on the day (all that unexpected sun and warmth).

I bought a Fladen "Diki Squid Jig" a lure for catching squid, similar to those I'd seen used successfully at Chesil (although not quite the same):

Cheap compared to some stores, but no where near as cheap as these ones: Buy Spinners & Spoons at Marine Megastore 15% off orders over £300!*

We didn't catch anything. However, I'd put my dive gear in as the forecast looked promising, so we stopped off to see if I could find some scallops on the way home. Managed to find 4 of good size (& a small one that went back) & 3 beachcasting weights - unfortunately I seemed to have lost the smallest, the only one that I have a use for!

Just received the father-in-law's Shimano Exage 4000FA reel from our very own Podge (one delighted customer -- soon to be two delighted customers!). It's the mutt's nuts. Only slightly bigger than my Shimano Exage 2500RA it has several nice features:

- Higher line capacity (but not huge) - the 2500 is just too close to the minimum practical size for sea fishing IMHO, so this should be near perfect for lures & light bait fishing.

- Proper "fighting" handle

- nice chunky front drag. The f-i-l kept digging the rear drag of my old reel into the sand, so that, the bigger drag discs and his interest in bait fishing seemed like it would be a good combination for him; I'm quite taken with it myself.

BTW come across this link. A little dated but interesting none the less: http://www.ukbass.com/downloads/pluggingaway.pdf
There is a similar article by Mike Ladle, which has been updated: http://ukbass.com/downloads/beginnersguide.pdf
But Mike's regular diary postings are the place I look for the most up to date info. - you can see how his gear choices have evolved over the years: Mike Ladle's Fishing Diary

Coincidently, Mike Ladle recently wrote the article I was looking for when I started sea fishing last year. It's on how he is selecting his latest reel: Mike Ladle's Fishing Diary - he's going for a 6000 size reel for bigger tropical fish.

Practical all depends on the rod wich depends on the size of the lure etc. 2-10 gram, 2.7 metre lure rod would suit a 1000 size reel for example.

I just took these earlier today on a 5-20 gram, 3 metre rod matched to a 2500 sized reel...

It aint size that matters... it's what you do with it that counts :D

Nice fish mate I guess winter is good for you.

It's not too bad I guess, mostly just the usual suspects like whiting n dabs in plague numbers but if you fish the right spots there are good Lemon Sole, Haddock, Pollack and always cod... I got a 7kg cod just before xmas too.
Springtime is the best tho. last nights biggest was just over 5kg... over the next 2-3 months we can expect to take bigger ones as they move inshore to gorge themselves before breeding. By the time the air temp is constant + degrees and the crabs come inshore the cod fishing is just insane. The seatrout are starting to appear inshore now as well. I'm hoping to top last years efforts of 8kg cod from shore and 1.5kg Seatrout.
As good as the fishing is here... Bass and Mullet are rare catches.

Nothing happening in guernsey this time of year?

O yes we have very good if a bit controversial fishing in Guernsey this time of year!! There are huge shoals of big breeding bass for the boat angler & the odd stragglers from the shore. There has been quite a few 8-12lb bass shore caught recently. (but not my me)
Good question Sunfish.

Nice cod Davie, do you go after them with a speargun in summer?

They actually get a bit more scarce during summer, probably the worst time of year for cod, tho the coastal stocks (rock cod) are here all year round. The larger ones that start coming now til spawning time are pelagic and only come into the shallows for the feed n breed.
I've missed out on spearing them tho as up until last summer I was more an underwater tourist than spearo and mainly went for flatties with a knife if I bothered hunting at all. I speared a bit more heavilly late last year but it was mostly pollack I went after and the cods I got close to weren't worth the shot.
I've been out of the water for a while now as I don't like getting changed in blizzards n' hurricanes but I'll definately have a go, possibly next month or as soon as the weather clears up a bit. I'm itching to get back in, the water is crystal clear now as well. I'll be sure to report any big lunkers I manage to skewer.

I fancy a shot at one of these.

Good question Sunfish.

They are all easy targets come breeding. seems a bit naughty picking them off before they spawn. Is it closed for netting over there now then?

I feel bad taking cod sometimes as they are incredibly stupid when they are gorging. They continue feeding like nothing is a miss as I strip my flyline right onto their heads. I had one nibbling on my toes last year as I was stood on the horse mussels... just a case of grabbing sometimes rofl
at least Bass can be a bit skittish and have the sense to lay low.

Super cod.

I'm surprised that a 1000 is practical for the sea (fine for the canal, river or small lake) - they look very neat. I'm currently using 30lb Whiplash Pro braid, which is very fine at 0.1mm (for comparison 10-12lb mono is usually more than 3x thicker), yet it have on a couple of occasions come close to emptying the spool of my 2500 reel when the wind is behind me (I mostly use lures 18g-32g). I take it 2500 reels don't have 2.5 times the capacity of a 1000?

BTW At the weekend, I tried out one of those spiral Jardine weights (18g) that are designed to twist onto your line ahead of a spinner or lure. I was disappointed to note that it didn't didn't add any noticeable distance to my casts but its odd trajectory did have me concerned about knotting (it didn't). I thought it looked a bit odd after the second cast & sure enough lost it on the third cast (should have checked it). Bit disappointed by that but I believe they are really intended for use with light spinners rather than 24g lures.

I also tried out one of my new Metrolite tobys from Veals. They are: surprisingly small/compact for 30g & 40g (good) - with little noticeable size difference between the two, have holographic decoration, hook feathers held in place with a glow-in-the-dark collar (i.e. all singing, all dancing). The 30g one cast well, I was unable to see if it moved well in the water though.

I also tried out a powerball equipped with an Eddystone eel (my fav. lure) on a 6ft leader -- the eel is hooked into the ball for casting. It was disasterous! I think a shorter trace, perhaps with some of that memory-less mono might work better.

I also got a few split-rings & swivels from Veals, so I have started rebuilding my Flounder spoons. BTW I made a couple of split ring tools as described by Magpie on ADM's Guernsey angling website: cut a slot in either side of the flat blade of a "jewellery"/"precision" screw driver (I used a junior hacksaw & mini aluminium mitre box). I used a 3mm and a 2.4mm precision screw driver. The 3mm one is perfect for the big rings on my 150g Yann "pirk" and some of my large, vintage American poppers. The 2.4mm is just right for the 7mm rings I got from Veals for my spoons & Rapala/Rebel-style lures. [Magpie - rep coming your way].
