Sea Angling for Spearos

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Just goes to show that determination wins in the end, you will be leading the club competition soon.

Not sure about leading it Mart, not with Clarky and Monty about... Glad to be in the top 6 at the moment with a schoolie (min club size is 3-0-0 and 50.8cm btw). Forgive me protecting the mark by fudging the photos a bit but with the locals here so on the ball I got to give myself an advantage when I find them!!

Here's another shot of the boy with fish. Might just have to go fishing tomorrow as well!!

...Apparently there are spiky bits on a bass. Stop moaning and hold it up boy.
roflGive the poor lad a break, it is February after all:D.

Just put a new woodburner in (love it), so weather has now warmed up, in fact it is probably the start of summer! Was wondering this week if it is worth have a try for some flatties. I think the FIL might be getting a touch of "cabin fever" having been prevented from hill walking by the snows recently (thought it would enhance the walking myself - although I do recall walking through thigh deep snow on Mount Index a few years ago, that was hard work - started thinking about improvising snow shoes/skiis).

Just walk backwards if using the fins! Course then someone's liable to elect you to some important Gov. office.

roflIs that a qualification for high office - like walking AND chewing gum at the same time?!

What do think, worth a try for flatties?

No idea about the flatties. Not had many in my whole life, might even be able to count them all without taking my socks off!! And they were all plaice as well.

I took the boy out again today since conditions were very similar (wind direction and speed, tide height and time of fishing it compared to high). Naff all. Not even wrasse which I am slightly confused about. The only difference in conditions I could see was that there was a lot less fog and there was a chop on the sea for some reason.

Reactions: Mr. X
Thing is Andy this is just about the quietest, worst, time of year for catching fish! You did well with that bass but I wont be expecting to catch much for another month - at least.
Lee from Piette told me that last weekend he was on a boat with 250lb of Pollock, not impressed myself!

You aren't wrong there!! I was hoping for a second bonus fish. I half thought it was a fluke but half thought I should try again!! And the sun was shining...

I had heard that the Bass have vacated the blondel and with RS doing wreck trips for pollack they can't be there in number now or he would be out there so I'm hoping they will be inshore soon, normal years it has been mid Feb but it' been a lot colder this year (compared to the last 2 warm winters) and the spring moult of crabs is set back to what will likely be normal time of year at the end of this month maybe. There has been the odd bass caught but not enough for me to defrost precious crab baits and head to the rough ground west coast marks. I'm watching and waiting to hit it hard... Water is clear though I don't think there's enough (nor warm enough) for me to go have a looksie!!

Thing is - wrecking for breeding Pollock ain't much different to catching bass at BB!

Fair comment... At least the bass can have a rest now, shame it goes on to paying anglers fishing for big pollack now. Vicious circle of overfishing against what seems common sense fisheries management if it was done my way (or the American way even with slot sizes). Big long discussion that's been gone over a million times though...

I think I'm going to have give up working, it plays havoc with my fishing, I hardly got to use my rod last year. Quite frustrating as I got all kinds of rigs prepared to try out. I guess the weather didn't help, dived whenever it looked half decent. We're all hoping for a good, long, sunny traditional summer this year, to match the tradition cold/snowy winter we've just had. (Although I seem to recall rain being another weather tradition in Britain:D).

If it is any consolation Mr X, you went diving more times than I did last year!
We in Guernsey not only had a bad summer weather wise but we also had zero vis for most of it too.
I have high hopes for this year?

I find that hard to believe. I was picking & choosing my days more carefully last year but the weather made the choice pretty limited. The week in Devon made up for the rest of the year though - dived most days. Post Summer had a few good weekends but no where near as many as I hoped & expected. Poor vis. is doubly frustrating because it's not good for plugging/spinning either.

Not sure what we'll do this year. I love S. Devon but the family want a change. We almost had a "stay-cation" (i.e. stay at home vacation) last year -- glad we were talked out of that!

Got some of these things in the post today:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhzqbdGWC6Y]YouTube - Picol'eau[/ame]

Look good so figured I shuld try them. They are designed to swim upwards when cranked with the inverted bib as if trying to escape like fry do on the surface when you (rarely) see bass etc harrassing shoals of baby fish etc.

Not the cheapest soft lure in the word so I will have to see results before I spend on several of them...

Andy it seems I cant to send you a pm?
I wanted to talk about your potential live bait eel tank.
Anyhow - how long would you need to keep the fish alive for?
I dont think you need a big tank just a little understanding & know how.
A large volume of water will always be more stable than a small volume but a well maintained & clean smaller tank - something like a 100 gal plastic water tank will work fine.
You will need a cooler, obviously a titanium cooler would be best.
You will need a quality water pump - Eheim 1060 would be good.
You need a protein skimmer - red sea would be good.
You need a good source of fresh water to top up evaporation (salt wont evaporate meaning you water chemistry will alter rapidly if you dont top up evaporation with pure fresh water.)
Maybe most important of all you will need a test kit to ensure the collected salt water remains the same parameters.
Please ask away any questions.

Not sure on the PM, apparently I have another 9,000 or so messages allowed...

Anyway:

Anyhow - how long would you need to keep the fish alive for? Maybe a month or 2 realistically.
I dont think you need a big tank just a little understanding & know how.
A large volume of water will always be more stable than a small volume but a well maintained & clean smaller tank - something like a 100 gal plastic water tank will work fine. Might be easier to get hold of something this size. 4x2x4ft tanks should be findable as they don't work on the "Arnold" method
You will need a cooler, obviously a titanium cooler would be best. The reason I was looking at a cheap set up is because I have free access to a beer chiller and control box.
You will need a quality water pump - Eheim 1060 would be good.
You need a protein skimmer - red sea would be good. Pricey eh!! £350 for something for a tank that size. Ouch!! How many sandeels is that??!
You need a good source of fresh water to top up evaporation (salt wont evaporate meaning you water chemistry will alter rapidly if you dont top up evaporation with pure fresh water.) Garden Hose??!
Maybe most important of all you will need a test kit to ensure the collected salt water remains the same parameters

I have second hand skimmer & pump.
Tap water spells "death" you need to either buy your fresh water from the aquarium or far better buy a RO (reverse osmosis) unit.
The key to a small(ish) tank is stability & tap water contains a lot of things not found in our sea like chlorine!
So pump + skimmer £100.
RO unit £100
Pipe fittings, test kit, gravel, sand £100.
You might get a RO for less & I might have some of the fittings & pipe?
You will need other bits too - the tank, insulation for the tank, (lots of ventilation for the chiller) & maybe a waterproof box for the chiller, a lid for the tank & electrics.
