South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Went in at 11am for about 30mins just south of Brixham. Viz was about 2m or a bit less and even worse with my mask which kept fogging up! Didn't stay in long as was not really good enough. Despite the poor viz did manage to almost touch several bass of decent size but way too close to have a chance of getting a shot on. Came out pleased to see some decent sized fish and will be getting a shorter speargun for Xmas and some anti fog for the mask!
I'm sure a more experienced spearo with the right sized gun would have been even more pleased.
Cheers
Sam

I always take anti fog out with me... I did the toothpaste and putting a naked flame on the glass tricks but they weren't enough. After the anti fog ran out I filled the spray container with baby shampoo; works a treat.

What length gun were you using and what length will the next one be?

Tried gob but wonder if it's less effective when you've got a bit of sea water mixed in. It might be the glass as my last set never fogged up. I was told last night dove soap is worth a go, the story goes USAF pilots use a derivative of it....
Gun is a rob allen 90, will go for a second gun of 60 or less

I had problems with my mask steaming up on one side even with gob. Gave it a good clean with toothpaste and do the gob trick prior to each use and not had a problem since. Supposedly the toothpaste removes the silicon from the lens left after the manufacture which causes the misting.

Just got back from a shore dive, went out at low and went deep looking for flatties, after 45 mins none found and decided to work my way inshore up a long gulley, came round a corner and hello mr bass... He saw me and turned away, so I reeled off a long shot and got him through the side of the gills at range! Very pleased, a mooch further in saw another handsome bar of silver on the stringer and then about 5m down slowly mooching through the kelp I saw a belter just on the edge of the viz, about 5m away.... I was at the end of a long dive and started heaving a bit, calmed myself and started stalking him, but he decided to gently swim the other way... I tried looking for him again and think I glanced his tail, but I called it a day and headed in happy, to see a shoal of schoolies fly past in the shallows over the sand.

I also spotted some silvery white catfish playing with the wrasse, they had a brown line down the top of the back... Gurnod sized fish but didn't shoot as didn't know if they were tasty or not??? Any ideas?

Cant imagine what that would be! Can you give any more details?

I've taken a few this summer but never seen one of size, think record is about 3.5lb lovely creamy flesh but I feel it's a shame to kill for such small mouthfuls. Now on night dives like to just observe them feeling their way along the bottom looking for food. Mind you if I do come across one of size, wouldn't think twice. Stocks by all accounts are healthy.

LOL I can see that they look at little like a corydoras catfish!
I am not a fan myself.. very distinctive flavour like a freshwater fish but they are a very popular restaurant dish!

Torquay dive late afternoon at spot recommended to me by Lee (Scrumpy) last year. Surrounded by mullet so took 6 that will all be put to good use. One in the oven now - late dinner. Nothing of any size, all between 2-3 lbs. Good dive with variable vis but, average of 2-3 meters. Plenty of life to be seen.

To top it off as I got out the water and started to gut and scale the catch, who should come and say hello but the man himself, Lee. Good to meet you mate and good luck with your next dive.

Cheers,
D.

Popped in at Start Bay this evening to try out my new wetsuit (had previously been using a surfing suit) WOW! What a difference, could have spent hours out there if it hadn't been getting dark. Good vis of 3-4m. Got a 3.5 lb mullet. My first ever silver fish, after a summer of nothing but pollack!

If anyone is happy to share any tips on dispatching quickly and easily I would be grateful. I struggled to hold on to him, got in a tangle and ended up having to swim over to some rocks to kill it. Spear went through top of the head so was terrified of losing it!

Not eaten mullet before either so hoping I like the taste, been reading the cooking tips a few pages back!

Aw, shucks, mate, you didn't have to say all them awfully nice things about me.
:wave

With mullet I'll drop my gun and swim along the line to the fish rather than pulling the fish to me. I'll use my stringer to dispatch and string it straight down through the head. You have to be careful with mullet because they're alot softer than bass. Fillet the fish as normal but remove the dark flesh and you'll have a fish almost on par with Bass. (cue comments!)

With mullet, string them through the eyes as their mouths are very soft and can rip free from a stringer without you noticing, especially if your moving through kelp.
