Humorous story time.....
My dive buddy Pete and I have managed to get access to a 5m boat with a new 20hp Honda outboard. All good so far. It's the work boat of Petes boss, and he allowed us to take it for a spin to access some of the more inaccessible spearing spots.
We managed to push it into the water from the slip, load up and get going. We motored out of Salcombe and decided to give it the beans once past the harbour entrance. Throttle to the stop and all it did was dig in, make more noise and only increased speed slightly.
Hmmm...check fuel, check kill cord, check trim..all OK. Prop not fouled.
Next, check the bilges for water, and oh boy was there water! We pumped it out as we were motoring along, but was still slow.
We anchored up at our first mark, jumped in to be greeted with 6m+ viz. Not in a rush, we checked to boat hull. The cause of our slow progress was apparent with the discovery of a 20cm x 1cm hole in the hull.
Dive abandoned, we started up and headed for home, although by now, the bilges were almost full to the deck level, with the manual bilge pump just keeping up with the flow.
Maximum speed on the way home was a heady 6knts, and the boat nudged onto the slip with the water level with the deck hatch.
The boat had been left on a concrete slipway all winter, and the weight of the boat, combined with the wave / wind action had worn right through the GRP keel without anyone noticing...until now.

Thanks for the advice & info about Exmouth. Someone bought a property in Exmouth I was interested in. I haven't ruled out that area, but am flexible. I am heading down for a recce early next week and plan to have a look around the area between Exeter and Plymouth.

Are the South Hams the better area in Devon for spearfishing?

Torquay dive this afternoon with 2m vis on average. Didn't expect to find much so explored a familiar spot in more detail which paid off with the discovery of a scallop spot. One spider crab seen.
Did a course put on by the Community Seagrass Initiative yesterday and learned more about the various smaller animals seen on dives. Spent a bit of time observing today with better understanding of what's going on down there. Good fun dive.

So, on Dai's news of cuttlefish spotted I decided to go on a hunt after work last night. Vis was around 3-4m in the shallow water, and reduced to 2m in water deeper than 4 or 5m. There were lots of snot particles in the water, some were huge. I saw quite a few cuttlefish and took two of them home. Too cold after 45min.
I always feel a bit sorry when killing anything, but killing cuttlefish makes me feel properly guilty. They look like something that has had a well thought out evolution. So noble with all their tentacles hanging in front of them. Scowling away and changing colour at you. Cuttlefish are by far one of my favourite creatures. In-side-out shellfish! They are however damned tasty, so I'm just going to have to get over it!
Hoping for a few more dives on Monday / Tuesday.

I understand what you say about killing, try to get a clean kill and be prepared with a bag to put it in, eat it fresh and share the meal with family or friends. Good luck.

Good hunting sir, have only ever come across one cuttlefish so far which ended up on the family dinner plates. Incredible creatures I agree.
A couple of mates went out spearing at a popular Torquay spot yesterday but didn't get in as the conditions changed through the afternoon enough for them to change their minds. Another diver friend has reported vis in Paignton though. Haven't looked at projected forecast yet but hoping to get in on Monday if possible.

If you feel that strongly, perhaps you shouldn't kill any more of them? I think I might feel the same about cuttlefish, & octopus & sailfish - not sure why, they are all 3 unusually cool creatures in their own way. Not so concerned about squid though, which are quite similar. Other people have guilt/special attachment to other creatures e.g. shark, wrasse & dog fish crop up from time-to-time on this forum. Taste ok? ;)

Yes, I know what your saying Mr X. Unfortunately (for them and my conscience) they are amazingly tasty. I try to console myself with the fact that a quick death for few (cuttle)fish is probably a lot better than what happens to the ones that are caught by potters or gill netters.

The forecast is looking good for some bank holiday vis. Lets hope it holds up!

Torquay dive this afternoon after being handed the gift of a few spare hours. Didn't expect much but thought I'd get in anyway. Was greeted by a fairly thick bloom that was continually present, made vis an average of 1 - 1.5 meters tops. Still, got a bit further out and spent some time scanning the sandy bottom. Came by a razor clam shell sticking out of the sand and thought I'd at least come away with something, grabbed it to find it was empty. So the highlight of my report is that I picked up an empty shell - don't know why I've even bothered to write about it. Anyway - beware the bloom!!!!!!

Yes, very thick bloom. I checked Dawlish, Teignmouth, and Babbacombe before I gave up. I'm normally up for a dive in poor vis, but it looked pretty gross.

I guess diving is off for the next few weeks... Boo.

Well the last time I came on the forum there was talk of cuttlefish off Paignton so headed down that way yesterday morning. I could see how brown the water was with the algae but belligerently got in anyway. Can confirm the water was brown brown brown although slightly warmer than on a scalloping trip a few weeks back. Didn't even find any empty shells to speak of. Anyone know if the bloom extends to the South Hams?

Hi all , was hoping for my ( later than usual ) first dive of the year today and the weather and tides were ideal , however I thought I would check the vis first after the above reports of bloom and oh dear it looks really bad, ( Torbay area ) so my first dive of the year will be the latest ever by the time I do get in .... not happy !!!

Southhams last night:

6-7m vis, no bloom, excellent dive.

No fish seen apart from a pollock, however we were visited by a baby seal who was quite inquisitive. also came across a load of cuttlefish who were pretty chilled out and let me handle them a bit. I'm sure they're tasty but it would have been like shooting a pet hamster in a cage!

Thanks for viz update guys. Terry haven't been in yet myself, south hams sounds good before bloom hits there. Dawlish teignmouth the same mate, brown and smelly
