The weather looks like it just might allow a dive this weekend, that's if the swell stops and the water clears up in time.
Hi guys, i have been reading this post and last years one and think it is really useful. Really like some of the stories you have put o here.
Anyway im new to the spearfishing, im a student in exeter. Me and a few of the boys were hoping to get down to some of the places you have mentioned on the site and give my gun a try out. I was wondering what sort of wetsuits you boys are using, i.e. are you still in winter suits? What could we get away with?
one more thing, when you talk about good conditions for spearfishing, what is it that you look for in the weather? Is it similar to diving, high pressure for few days etc?

ive got 2 gabbanos 79/100 from dave there brilliant but just fancy spendin some more money

. The pictures on the thread i just sent are ok, but dotn really do the gun justice, so you may want to google 'seacsub' for their official site. I think i may get a 105 for travelling next year, although i am also looking at 110 RAs that have mulitple band capabilities.

Huw if you're looking for a multiple band gun, check the improved 2007 model of the X Fire: it has a new muzzle fitted for 2 circular bands and looks cool. But If I were in your shoes I'd wait for the new Gabbiano Snake (on sale from next May) with a new muzzle for two circulars, since you're already familiar with the Gabbiano Handle and balance.
For the guys who asked about C4 Mr. Carbon I know wehre to buy on line, but they're almost 500 euro and you can't find it any cheaper: one of them costs as much as 3 Gabbianos (three!)...but guys, it's still a speargun. (however you may ask feedback to forum member Marwan: he has a Mr.Carbon).
Me I'm doing a very tough psychic training on myself to convince my subconscious that I don't need to buy any new gun, But Gabbiano Snake, Cayman HF and Cressi Geronimo are calling my name :naughty.
I plan to go spearfishing tomorrow morning. Maybe one or two of my old guns will accidentally get unclipped from the float and be lost in the abyss. Then my wife will understand my sorrow for the loss, and so...(no, she doesn0't buy guns for me, but I need her permission to do it: peace in the family, that's fundamental for a queit life)

sasheo the sea at the moment is like gravy, i dont think it will clear until the end of march, that's if the swell stops and the wind does not turn east.
Most of are using 5mill open cell suits which are not like surfing suits open cell is much warmer ,so if you are using a surfing suit you may last 20 mins
,i think the sea is about 9c at the moment.
Also there is a spearfising club in exeter.

Nice one spag, thats an ideal suggestion. I was watching your posts on some thread or another which was discussign these two guns, but i figured i would wait for their release untill i started bothering people with questions
... but hey youve got me started now!!! So then do you know anywhere that i could find some pictures of either? What will the positioning be like for the rubbers on the snake? You see one of my favorite features of the gabbianio is the trb head, and how the open muzzle provides such a clear line of sight... will this feature be lost?Also good luck for your hunt this morning... let us know how you get on!

Thanks spearheads for the advice. Think i might give it a go and see how we get on, would be nice to be in the water for any length of time. Have just checked my dive log and was diving in plymouth at this time of year at 18-20m for 40mins with just 5mill suit, im usually pretty warm.

The swell seems to have calmed down today it was flat calm and I'm guessing the viz was 3 meters ,so i'm going to try oddicombe tomorrow ,got some new fins to test.

Big octopus and small conger: not a great score. And no gun missing in action. But water is 15°C, pretty warm for the season, and it's a pretty pleasant to dive in.
Do you find any octopus in South Devon? Sargo breams? Giltheads?

PS- Huw, the guns discussion would hijack the Devon thread and I respect this space: it's yours, for discussing your domestic experience. We'll have time to discuss the gun point and I'm still puzzled up myself about it. But basically question is: why more bands? No use honestly unless you're hunting tuna.

Sounds like a nice catch the best thing i have caught this winter is a cold .
As for the octopus not sure if we get them or not, Most of us catch bass ,mullet, Pollock, bream, and congers.

When I was a kid in the 70's i remember a very hot summer spent in Jersey and there was a plague of Octopi; everyone was catching them. Maybe 'global warming' will make them appear here! having said that you get some monster squid early in the season. You can catch Gilt-head bream and black bream although they are not common. Cardigan bay and Littlehampton are good for black bream, Portland and Salcombe for gilt-head. I buy copies of sea-angling magazines and you'd be amazed what gets caught by many shore-based anglers and they give you good marks to check out.
Got in for a dip today, not much to report apart from the sea is getting warmer.
I spent most of the time looking under ledges and holes ,caught a small crab so i dropped him back in also saw one big wrasse. I think i might of scared a big fish in its hole because as i looked in a big load of sand blow out of the hole, maybe a conger .

Just booked a place for the Summer hols, near a little place called Habertonford, between Totnes & Dartmouth (W. of Brixham), last week of August. Not exactly as planned but close enough. Looks picturesque.
We should be able to visit Torbay, Babbacombe Bay/Hope's Nose, Brixham/Berry Head, Blackpool Sands. Is there any spearing near Dartmouth or Slapton (Slapton looked bleak to me but a friend reckons it is a good scuba spot)? I am also wondering if there might be some trout fishing (with rod) around there too?
That frees up the start of the Summer hols., maybe we can squeeze weekend in N. Devon or Guernsey?

It was the famous drought year which I think was '76. I was in Jersey for 6-8 weeks and it was hotter than Spain for the whole summer, my hard orange Woolworths mask, snorkel and fins got a right seeing to rofl rofl
That's a thing to investigate: you never know. Could have been a conger, an edible species of wrasse, or even a gilthead: giltheads are very smart, shy and cunning fish, hard to spear in open water, but it's a very easy catch if you're lucky enough to bust them inside holes (where they seldom hide). Bass as well is not a hole fish as you know well, but tho rarely it's not impossible to bust'em in holes. Still I'm talking about the Mediterranean, not the english waters which I don't practice. Global warming: Yes Spaniard I believe that's a real issue. In the last ten years it has become plenty of barracudas, bluefish and even parrotfish here in the central upper Med (northwestern italian coast). So it's possible to forecast that med fish are moving to England some of these days. Speared any dentex up there yet?
