right ive just come back from a very cold div in a 5mm surf suit roll on tuesday when I gt my new one. I picked some muscles as there were plnty around but not sure how to cook themalso got what i think are limpits, its the ones that leave th rings on the rocks. ive soaked them in hot water so any help on how to cook would be brill

Limpits just pull them out the shell cut the black stuff of the top and fry, they are quite chewy so dont over cook them.
Muscles had a horrible experience with them, something to do with the water they had been in that made me ill.
Were did you get in scott, viz ect ect.

Funnily enough I came across 2 recipes for mussels recently - unfortunately I haven't come across any mussels! I think they both involved cleaning & then simmering in some sort of booze. Off the Gordon Ramsey calendar (don't ask) & simplified:
mussels,
dry white wine,
bay leaf,
thyme,
olive oil,
1 carrot, finely diced,
1 leak, ditto
1 celery stick, ditto
2 tsp curry powder
fish stock
spinach

"Place mussels in a large bowl of cold warer. Pull away the 'beards'...remove any barnacles. Discard any that don't close when gently tapped"

Then simmer mussels, wine & herbs for 3-4 minutes. Strain off juices & save them.

Fry the veg. for 5 minutes, then add curry powder & juice, bring to boil then simmer until liquid reduced by half (& syrupy). Then add mussels & spinach & cook for a few more minutes.

I didn't realise that you could eat limpets -- seems like it might be hard work to remove them. Are they chewy like calamari?

I love Limpets! I eat them when ever we are in Fuetreventura. I have collected them in Scotland (Mull area).

When I've eaten them abroad they have been served in the shell.

Went in at Preston just to mess about didnt see one fish, gutted. Vis in some places was 2 meters and at others you could barely see your hand. Took my camera with so should have some pics to post soon. The highlight of my dive apart from laughing at my buddy in my camo suit ( it doesnt fit so he used it ) was finding a star fish

Look I know there’s no fish about at the moment and we’ve all gone a bit stir crazy over the weather, but “Limpets!!!” F#$king Limpets for gods sake get a grip man.:head I’d rather cut my own toes off with a blunt knife and eat them raw than eat Limpets:confused:

Excellent.....
:head there's no fish....no vis....so why not think right of the box and go and do something else !!!

Right I’m back from sticking my head in the freezer and am feeling slightly more chilled out now:) , so I’d like to apologise for my previous post and if you want to eat Limpets, that’s fine by me. At least there will be less of them to slip on and cut my wetsuit and myself on, so please fill your boots, yum yum.

Now I’ve got that off my chest, back to business and some help.

Fort Bovisand, can you still park there and be able to launch my kayak? Not been down to Bovi for 15 years so have know idea what the situation is. The plan is to yak across to Plymouth Breakwater for a spot of spearing so any advice would be appreciated.

Allan

OK OK My heads back in the freezer, Just found Jes’s post from two days ago on Plymouth Breakwater so sorry for the double posting, but any more info would be gratefully received.

Jes if you are reading this perhaps we should team up for a trip out there?

Allan

you not having a good day on the forums today are you ALLAN B ? why dont you pop over and we can talk about it over a nice basket of freshly fried limpits haha just kidding , I chickened out on eating them and just had the muscles, they do make good bait so im told.

To protect my belief that Limpets are good eating!

Collected them in Scotland, boiled and I agree they are a bit rubbery.

BUT, if you ever see them on the menu on Fuetreventura or one of the islands order them and be open minded. How they prepare them, I don't know but they are lovely.

They do differ slightly in that the shells are covered in green weed / algae and slightly bigger (1/3) , whilst ours in the UK, that I have seen always have clean shells and are a bit smaller. I assume they are the same. I'd be interested to know how they cook them.

I'd love to kayak the breakwater but I've only got a white water kayak which isn't good for diving. And I hear you can't land on the brakewater. I have a waveski but its not cut out for carrying dive kit. Mind you I can hold my breath quite well and roll a kayak. Maybe I could just roll over and spear from the surface and then roll bakc up!:martial

Mussels are filter-feeders so anything in the water which is 'bad' can potentially end up in them and then in you if you eat them! Best thing is to check with local water authority to check on sewage output into sea and also the blue flag people who rate cleanliness of water against European standards. Rick Stein, Ray Mears and Hugh Utterly-Nutterly have all cooked limpets on TV and seemed to like them, me i've never tried 'em.

Good haul. I really need to go easy on the bass a rest this year and fancy some pollack. Trouble is I can never find any big enough worth shooting. Might be a trip to the breakwater coming up.

Cheers for the offer Scott W:) . I'd love to try the kayak someday this summer. I might get a few shore dives in first to test my ear out (had it drilled b4 xmas but its sorted now) so I won't waste the trip.
