algea algea algea and more bloody algea! dived babbacombe at high water didnt see anything but green stuff o and spiderman! so think ill be staying out the water for a week or two

i think they've already arrived we just cant see them yet! when i was in the water today it just felt fishy, if you know what i mean?
hey spearheads sounds like you had a nice pollack are you or anyone else going to bognor comp this saturday.
had a nice dive on sat in bigbury bay from the boat, dived a shallow reef 3-10 mts and saw 2 lots of 20+ small bass but nothing came in or big enough, moved out to a deeper reef 15 mts and got a nice pollack 6lbs, got 2 rass for pot bait which i checked sunday and had 2 nice brown crab, lovely day, no swell, lightish south east wind. viz was good maybe 5=6 mts with lovely light. swell is picking up here today so no diving for a few days.
think may water last for about 2-3weeks from what i understand but this is my first proper season and ive never heard of it before so could be wrong! but if im right we should be back in the water in about two weeks time:vangry

The may water doesnt last long, its because its been sunny this April that the plankton has bloomed early.
But I'm happy to dive in most conditions so it doesnt really bother me.

Hi Rob, I was meaning to get in touch with you at the end of last season when you briefly mentioned this to me but alas I couldn't get off an island with lots of fish and clear water
I'll have to drop by the pool on a wednesday night when I'm off (working nights at the moment). Surprised you didn't see any fish around Erquy because in 6 odd outings last season on 2 occasions I saw 2Kg+ bass in shoals and some smaller ones too, funnily enough never see the mullet around there though. The bass are very tough to land in Erquy, so many people in the water causing a ruckus leaving them very jittery. Lots of lobbies/scallops and conger around alright.

Nope....nothing seen of any significance Bass wise off Erquy for 10 years + at all levels of depth...shore & rib. Where do you normally go?
Plenty of mullet in current on off lying rock outcrops.

Spearfishing may be banned in South Wales!!
This is an email I received from Phil Coates SWSFC@aol.com concerning potential byelaws (see Byelaw 43 for spearfishing)for the future in South Wales:
Dear Mr Davies
No consultation yet pending.
We are yet to fully discuss in Committee in order to even frame any proposed text.
Below I append what Committee are likely to consider !!
Be aware that in a forthcoming "mini" review of our byelaws Committee are keen to consult on a district wide ban on spearfishing of all types.
It comes about as a consequence of the existing byl preventing foul hooking being proposed for extension to flounder spiking. Members thought all such spiking should be prohibited.
I have taken informal soundings of BSAC (who are in support) & Welsh Assoc (no resp yet).
Who else might I contact - organisation wise?

Future Quarterly Item – Partial Review of Byelaws
Recommendation
That Members’ views be provided on the draft byelaws below and to note that some informal consultation has commenced with some Associations etc. The matter to then be referred to the 28th September 2007 Quarterly meeting to decide whether to make any byelaws for formal advertisement.
NB The below is a stop gap and whole- scale change of the byelaws might be appropriate when new SFCs take shape with a new remit under new (Marine Bill) powers over a new (All Wales) area.
(a) Possible changes to existing byelaws
Revocation of Byelaw 45 - Scallops – since SI 1717 2005 is more fulsome. Keeping this byelaw might be argued as confusing matters and duplication.
Byelaw 8 – Minimum Landing Size (MLS) for bass – to increase to 40 cm for rod / hook caught fish (i.e. 37.5 cm remains for all net caught fish)
Without this tweak and assuming a Welsh bass SI (MLS of 37.5cm) comes into force, then this byelaw could also be revoked.
Byelaw 34 - Set and drift nets
An easement possibly relax 200m length of set net (possibly also drift net) to 400m possibly only 1000m offshore of the Astronomic low water mark as shown on the latest Admiralty chart.
Possibility of changes to Byl 30 to allow conditional fixed net fishing at Tusker rock (Porthcawl) and Cardiff bay
(NB Need to prior consult Environment Agency, by reference to the provisions of the Salmon Act 1986).
Byelaw 41 – Boat fishing returns
Bass bag limit of 5 fish per person. As requested of SFCs by the Minister.
Clarify that the 5 pots and 100m net is a per boat limit (not per person).
Byelaw 43 – foul hooking
To extend foul hooking to cover also cover any form of “spiking & spearing” at low tide and spear fishing whether using aqualung or not.
(NB: Pre consultation with Diving associations is in hand)

It's been interesting reading the most popular and used thread within the spearfishing section on DB.
A couple of points:
The Exeter Spearfishing Club are holding their second club dive of the year on the 20th May at Meadfoot. If you want further information please send me a personal mail and I will be happy to send you an attached flyer.
As a club we want to extend an invitation to all of you who dive in South Devon to come along to our club dives. It appears from what I have been reading that there are some very accomplished divers who would be an asset to new spearfishers. Also we are always looking for potential competitive divers to bolster are club teams at the national competitions.
My second point, which is an observation really, it’s great reading stories about catches of Bass etc; however, that's all they are - stories. It would give us all a bit more credibility if we attached photo's to go with the stories of our endeavour’s. Like I said it's an observation rather than a criticism.
In South Devon we have some incredible ground to dive on, with most it being hardly touched by us. The same locations continually come up in forum chat. My point is get the marine charts out and start exporing some new ground its out there!
Well, I look forward to hearing from some of you if your interested in diving with some like minded people. You may even pick up a few tips - you never know.

Hadn't noticed you reading the Guernsey thread (check statistics) .
My second point, which is an observation really, it’s great reading stories about catches of Bass etc; however, that's all they are - stories. It would give us all a bit more credibility if we attached photo's to go with the stories of our endeavour’s. Like I said it's an observation rather than a criticism.
I agree with you there. I always try to post a pic. It makes the story more interesting.
