HI All dived plymouth breakwater today.Vis was different 2mtrs to 10mtrs on the surface it looked bad at 16mtrs there was as much 10mtrs vis .No bass/mullet and where have the pollock gone. All day diving for 4 pollock and one bass but i do feel better for some deeper dives

Helsinki is not the best place in the world for spearfishing, the only good fish "normally" is perch, and pike.. the fish is small and viz is usually really terrible. to be honest I have not been spearing here since I came.. it is so depressing.. the gulf of Finland and the other areas around our country are so polluted and full of plankton that you can usually see about 5ft.. it gets little better when you go out on a boat, but is still not great and no fish to be found.
this said there are people who do hunt here, mostly perch and flatfish, but I only go for gray fish in the late summer form sweet water lakes.. fun easy and good eating..

Wow Pekka im really surprized I thought you would have really good hunting grounds out there. Do spearfish in the lakes?
I don't know about spearing in lakes.. it might not be looked upon with favor here in Finland.. I only go picking gray fish..
I mean it is not totally not worth the effort, but compared to UK, south devon.. it is nothing.. and hence I am not too interested in diving here.. but i will be in Devon again this summer about one month.. so hopefully I get to go and dive at Budlegih, learn all over again how to swim against the current and spear some really nice fish..

done my bit! if this goes through its not just south wales that is under threat but it could be your own dive spot so make your voice heard everybody and i mean everybody!
Conditions this weekend fantastic. Dived down at Bantham/Bigbury as part of family camping weekend - great viz. Not a huge amount of fish but water clarity and reef structure ideal, water temp 15/16 deg. Nearly lost a finger to a good size lobster - need to improve Lobster snatching technique - left it to fight another day. Had 3 decentish Pollack and a Bass. Loads of Spiders about. Sea bed covered in weed mulch from recent storms and then huge numbers of Wrasse grazing like sheep over the top. School Bass flashing in and out. Loads of sand eels.
i know that i am a bit far from you guys in devon because i am in brightn but the spearfishing down here has been quite good of late aswell, i also had a nice lobster last week along with a bass. i have just brought a new spear for my gun. the spear it came with was a 7mm and i have brought a 6.5mm spear but when i put the new spear in it pulls out with any sort of pressure is there a way of overcoming this or do i need a new spear. i also notice that the groove at the end of the spear is smaller than on the spear that came with my gun. any help would be apreciated.
Welcome Sarge. This might get confusing, we have a major contributor called OldSarge (no relation I assume!). Anybody spear mackeral? I'm told its quite hard and gets extra points in some competitions. I had the opportunity a while back, I saw a shoal of bait fish swim by, then a shoal of mackeral in hot pursuit. I thought about firing into the huge, dense shoal (no way to aim at one) but decided to wait, as an angler told me mackeral chase the whitebait and bass chase the mackeral, so they usually cast over mackeral to try to catch the bass they hope are chasing them; of course, no bass showed up.
