Was 2-4m on Wednesday and the winds been offshore ever since so it can't be any worse (unless you dive by a river!). Spearheads?

Life is cruel.

About 5 meters deep, no warnings no pain just pop and the feeling of my head filling up with water followed by some dizziness. Now it feels like someone has pushed a marshmallow in my ear.

Thats me out of the water for two months. Gutted.

Could somebody explain the operating principles of a pneumatic to me please? I understand my band gun, and I used to have pneumatic air rifle that I had to pump up for each shot, but it sounds like pneumatic spearguns are a little different.

An air gun is cocked and charged by pushing the spear into the barrel forcing the piston to compress a mixture of oil and air. When the trigger is pulled the piston pushes the spear out of the barrel again under the force of the compressed oil/air. Mamba guns are slightly different so i'll let someone explain them.

Thanks for the explanation. Couple of remaining questions...

1. From my knowledge of hydraulics oil can't really be compressed - is the oil just for sealing purposes?

2. Do you literally have to push the spear against air pressure with no mechanical advantage? Sounds like a recipe for sore hands!

There's not much oil, mainly air. You use a loader which goes over spear tip to help you push it in. It's a technique thing really!!!

Dived yesterday only a few small bass and mullet seen but i caught 1 lobster and 2 crabs.

Came down yesterday and dived off the beach before babbicombe.There were a couple of scuba divers there and what looked like a windsurfing school? I should have paid more attention to the place as it was a nice dive although a little rough and crap vis.I managed a 3lb mullet saw some bass and a conger on the reef.The beach was in between two large rocks off shore.

Will come down again soon for sure.

How do you pick up your lobsters so they cant pinch you. Is it just behind the head?

Dont worry about the claws just grab it even if it gets your finger don't let go but yes the best place is behind the head.

You can do tail tapping with your guns spear to get them out of holes.

Well I couldn't wait any longer so braved the F5 onshore breeze at heybrook and the shagstone reef. Really lumpy with crappy vis till below 6m then it cleared. Found a nice reef with a gully That was really fishy loads of big pollock and a good big bass that kept taunting me from out of range.
Suddenly the fish dissappeared and this shape flapped towards me. A gannet at 8M got such a shock as it saw me!!!! no fish but a first for me seeing a swimming bird.
finished of with a long swim in a lumpy sea against the tide. knackered on exit!
