Played with a speargun this evening for the first time in 20 years. Crimped some monofilament onto a spear with a friends new gun. Woo! I'm king of the world!
Anyone got a good link for setting up a new gun? Anybody found an old gun they want to sell me? Before Dean makes me go out and buy one more expensive than his...
We are going in at Babbacombe tomorrow lunchtime for our first time...

I will be driving down to Devon Saturday -- real early if things go to plan. Hope to be in and around Torbay area for the week
, with Kayak & family. I don't have the address at hand but in a small village just inland (& pos. south) of Torbay. So hopefully might come across some of you. Unfortunately probably won't have Internet access while there.
Weather looks promising so far. (Almost had a heart attack when I first looked up long range weather forecast on weather.co.uk - fortunately it turned out to be Torbay, Canada!rofl)
Any suggestions on places I should visit? I don't get down there often, so would like to make the most of the trip & visit a few locations. I'm thinking maybe Ansteys, Hopes, Babbacombe, Blackpool Sands, maybe Salcombe & Brixham. I like quiet, obscure spots & beaches -- pretty hard to find on a short trip though. Any places to avoid? Also, any recommended tourist/family activities?
Interested in doing some dawn & dusk (early night?) diving too.

Get a bike repair patch, try the self adhesive ones called 'scabs' from bike shop, 99p. stick one to the inside of the tear. Then get some wetsuit glue and fill the hole from the outside of the suit, making sure you don't get any air bubbles in the filling (as far as you can help). Fill it good and work the glue into the nylon lining on the outside of the suit to help anchor the patch in. Leave to dry in a level position taking care not to glue the arm to the leg or anything silly like that. Should work. You can usually then remove the bike repair patch as its purpose was only to stop the glue from going everywhere inside the suit.
Worked on my shoulder tear on my suit ok, I get changed with more care now!

Mr X, winds look north-east over the weekend so it may be a bit murky in Torbay depending on the strength of the wind. Meadfoor beach faces south though so could be worth a look. In fact, the stretch from Hopes Nose to the Harbour faces south and could be worth checking, see www.underwaterpics.co.uk for guides. Failing that, head over to Thurlstone or Hope Cove (the other Hope Cove near Thurlestone) on the other side of South Hams, looks ideal for a few days.
Got in yesterday at Brixham and I could just see the end of my gun. the string weed has all been ripped up by the weather so im going to have to find another patch to bash the mullet. Im off to thurlestone 2moro after work and should be there around 2pm just in time for high tide. will post pictures of yesterdays water as soon as I get them

Murky and onshore with a 2ft swell at times so not much good but bloody great to get into the water.
Saw some large bass disappearing away from me at a high rate of knots.
Learnt a LOT:
1. Dont use Force Fins
2. Figure out your weight beforehand
3. Practise in shallow water
4. Dont pretend you can hold your breath for a minute when really 20 seconds is all you can get

Thanks Jez, that's really helpful. In Dorset a wind out of the NE would usually be a good thing -- it didn't occur to me that it would not be so good for Torbay. Your guide is great -- sorting out parking, cafes, currents, etc. can be quite an issue -- so it is great to get some "beta"; pity I won't have access to it while down there -- will try to print some off.
BTW any location suggestions for a dusk dive (somewhere fairly safe, accessible in the evening, fairly shallow & not suffering from powerful rips would probably be ideal - not Hope's Noses by the sound of it
)?I've just dug out an old climbing selective guide (Pat Littlejohn's) & an old chart for directions, some areas mentioned:
(London Bridge), Daddy Hole, Meadfoot Beach (Thatcher Rock, Ore Stone), Hope's Nose, Anstey's Cove, Redgate Beach, Long Quarry Point, Babbcombe, Oddicombe Beach, Berry Head, Old Redoubt (Southern Redoubt) Cliff.
Is Brixham/Berry Head worth a visit? (First time I saw spearos, as a child, was at Brixham, they had fish -- it obviously made an impression. Next time I saw a spearo was about 35 years later - just before I became one

Mr X Brixham is very tidal and can have a stron rip. , boat traffic and parking is pants this time of year. the beaches are packed with the usual holiday makers BBQing chavs leaving a mess in our loverly bay ( pet hate!!!) and the water is very easly upset and turned into soup BUT if you can look past all that and dont mind walking along the rocks past the loads of people there is a lot of mullet and bass to be had.
I tend to start off in shoalstone car park and walk along the rocks to the right hand side towards berry head. a 2 minute swim will take you to the first reed bed ( stay close to the shore) then just go towards berry head. Loads of mullet and you should have it to urself as the fisherman cant get there. When you get to berry head thats where I find the bass. On a clear day this is my best spot in the bay.
Went for a dive in livermead today to scope it out and had some unusual company. A Seal, this is my first encounter with the local seals and it soon took my mind off the lack of fish. I was in for about 40 minutes and he followed me everywhere, everytime I turned aound I could see him it WAS GREAT and I even got some video of him, Oh and the viz was about 1.5 meters and cloudy but better than yesterday so hopefully we might have some viz this weekend

Dived Thurlestone over the middle part of the day. Viz 4-6m or more in places, such a relief to able to see where you are going!
Saw a couple of bass early on close in a weed forest but they never came close and probably weren't big enough anyhow. Saw the tail of a mackerel later in the murk, well out of range and not heading my way.
Lots of baitfish and such, saw the most amazing starfish, big as a dinner plate and white and black coloured, five legs.
That was it really. No fish after that, except the odd small pollack. Lovelly dive though, the sun really shone on the sand on the bottom making everything really clear. Lets see how Scott gets on later!

HI Jez. I think I might have seen you in the water today. I got in at 12 and got out around 3ish.
Didnt see many fish worthy of the plate, the overly happy parking attendent said there was a big boat there yesterday netting all the fish
I saw loads of pollack but nothing decent size and tons of wrasse, a few dog fish and loads of bait fish. Took some nice video on the camera and a few pictures.
The pictures Ive posted are stills from the video .

Went in last night at Heybrook. Had 2 teatimebass one just over 3lb and the other about 2 and a half( just about to eat them now:inlove). There was plenty of fish and sealife there but nothing of any real size bar 2 mullet about 4/5 lb that stayed well out of range of my 75 gun. Time to invest in that 90 me thinks.
Vis was patchy as per usual from 5 meters in places down to 1.

Been out all day in the boat today, no bottom time at all but i did bump into a Spearo off Little Pickets Rock by Sidmouth. Is it anybody on this forum? On their own in a little rib?
Fishing was rubbish today nothing on the rapala's etc but i did get to scope out plenty of new spots because of the low neap tides and polarized specs!!
Anyone about in the next few days give us a buzz for Budleigh .

Thanks Jez & Scott. I printed out some guides to the area from Jez's link -- loads of good info. Might take a look down at Slapton (I think I mistakenly wrote Salcombe earlier) one morning/evening, perhaps with the rods as Matt suggested earlier in the thread.
The tides look good for afternoon all next week -- with high tide late afternoon moving into the evening later in the week. Tides getting bigger throughout the week too. Maybe the points might offer some morning low tide excursions too. Forecast so far is better than I dared hope for.
Car's loaded. It will be time to get up soon -- to try & beat the bank holiday grid lock!

Dived the Soudan and the Maine (which we own).
HUGE lobsters around and some massive pollack i think at 32 meters on the Maine.
Did some spearfishing minus the spear to practice over a sandy bottom watching bass attack sand eel schools.
I can now get down to 4 meters and stay there for 10-20 seconds lol.
Fantastic day and will post some pics later.

Didn't fancy trying to get into South Devon in holiday traffic so headed to Sidmouth for a family beach day.
Viz was pretty bad most of the time and the bass were all too small to shoot but I managed to get a 2lb mullet for tea (it was my first ever golden grey)
