Sidmouth is good for me because it is the nearest beach to my house (Taunton). Having said that I haven't dived there for ages because it is exposed to any swell from the East, West or South and the viz is always getting messed up. When it has been calm for a week it is a great place for mullet and I once had a 3lb bass there.

This is what Shiny1 still cant believe. I went in out Stoke a while ago and when I finished I forgot to unload the gun. So I drove home with the gun facing the windscreen and bouncing around while I was driving. I then laid it on top of my trailer tent in the garage facing the garage door. So me and my family were in and out with the gun facing us. I didn't realise until I went to go spearing again. It was probably like that for about a week. Still no harm done eh.

I know someone who did the same. I was stood in his kitchen as it went off and the spear shot past my foot ( by about a couple of feet) and into the kitchen units. He was pale as a ghost. He has been spearing for years but this one time forgot.:crutch
Just got back from an hours dive on Budleigh reef. Tried out the new Mares 3.5mm suit and it was great. Much more freedom and plenty warm enough for a 90 minute dive.
Only took one mullet at about 2.5lb. Spent most of the dive fighting the current. Will give it another go tomorrow.

Viz was good today, up to 6m in places. The tide was ripping over the reef, so it is best to avoid high. I saw one bass. I would have probabaly seen more if I had got out to the end of the reef. A lot of the bigger wrasse seem to have come very close in. I left them alone though.
There's always tomorrow.

With regard to the incident with the gun.
A friend told me about the time he was pumping up the pressure on his air gun in his mum and dads kitchen. The spear locked into place by accident and then further mishap caused the trigger to be pulled. His dad who was standing behind just about to take a biscuit out of a biscuit barrel had the spear launched at him and take the biscuit barrel out of his hands a pin it to the wall.
By all counts nothing much was said for some time as they were both in shock.

hi guys been reading for a couple of weeks now and spearfishing about the same amount of time and really enjoying it i tried sandy bay last weekend and seen plenty of fish mostly mullet and few bass not huge but nice to see the numbers
hi scott thanks for the welcome im exeter way just outside honiton but iv dived a couple of times in cornwall mostly perranporth sands as my brother has holiday let there fantastic beach heres the link Holiday accommodation at Perranporth Beach, Cornwall also dived harlyn bay that were fantastic really thinking about upgrading my wetsuit as im getting right into this spearfishing and im in a 3/2 oniel and its getting a bit cold for it (or am i being a wimp lol)
No, you are not being a wimp. A decent apnea/spearing wetsuit makes a hell of a difference.
Went in at Budleigh this afternoon with the gun to see what was about. Conditions looked ok but the vis was heavily obscured by really annoying clouds of sediment and plankton. Only saw small fish, maybe the ledge would have been better but the currents looked dodgy and the wind was trying to blow me out to sea. Ended up just practicing my dives.
You cant go wrong with a proper wetsuit. I went for a spetton 5mm fishman from www.subprof.com about a year ago. Its still in good condition and Its seen well over 50 dives in the year Ive had it. If you ever down the Torbay way and fancy a dive buddy, give us a shout Im always up for a dive.
yeah iv looked at them on the spearo site but dont know if itll fit me im quite a lump 17.5 stone is there anywhere i can go and try them on does anyone know ??????
