Went in at Budleigh today for my first ever spearfishing session. Visibility was really good 7-8m but some variations due to belts of plankton in places. Lots of Mullet in large shoals. Nearly took a monster Mullet but it must have been made of kevlar as the spear just glanced-off and sank after I shot him at point-blank range. The fish just looked at me then buggered off!!:confused: Saw a shoal of small Bass but they seemed spooked. Hope the vis stays like this for a bit.

Hi Scott,
Its a Cressi Sioux (75cm I think??) with 2x16mm Imersion bands and Beuchat mono. It only has a basic wishbone and I had to re-sharpen the spear after I was given the gun by a friend.
Any advice??

The sioux are not powerfull guns , I have the 60 version which now collects dust in the corner of the study But ive caught plenty fish with it, and I got a years worth out of it before I changed to the commanche.

was it a head shot? Im sure some of those mullet wear crash helmets :)

If you got the cash maybe upgrade to a better gun or change to a thicker rubber but then you might have to upgrade to a stonger wishbone.

I was thinking about lobsters, how do you pick them up to catch them without losing a few fingers? I love lobster!

Yes, I just grabbed the thorax on one yesterday, seemed to work well enough. Strangely a couple of kids that were looking on declined my offer to take it out of the pot:D. It was considerably easier than dealing with a feisty big ol' male spider crab -- I found one a couple of years ago that was really feisty and could reach right back over the entire carapice. Getting that into my (greatly missed) Rob Allen cray bag, which already had a couple of crabs weighting it closed, was a job and half (I lost that bag & now use a Lidl bag -- not as robust but with fine mesh & purse opening, it should make it easier to bag crabs). It is quite fun though, trying to avoid the claws. I saw a lone, big spider in a large, vertical hole on holiday but memories of that last one made made me think twice -- I really didn't have time to deal with it if it got feisty.

havent had any trouble with spider crabs - turn them upside down and they go all placid.

Went in at heybrook this evening vis was patchy -great in places but diabolical in others, there was a haze near the surface so it meant spending a lot of time travelling underwater to try to spot fish. Didnt see any bass or mullet and didnt really want to take a pollack so left empty handed. However I did have some good news - a snorkeller called Risha returned my lost fins and mask etc, i thought that was very nice of him!!!!

I did see someone else out there but he was at quite a distance and I didnt catch up with him so I dont know how he went on....

Hello all

Just to pick up on the treat of spending the day with the shiny1 and Adrian. It was along but very fruitful day and we were both very grateful. I didn't manage to spear a bass today but I did see a few. I'm not sure what Adrian and I were doing differently to S1 but we did not fair nearly as well as he did. Perhaps we should have removed the blindfolds before putting our masks on!!!! It's great having someone willingly offload their experience and tips about the wind, tide, ground etc, and I'm sure in time I'll be bagging more fish. I did have a flatty, a decent mullet and I took a few edible pollack (which I've just eaten) and the rodd caught Bass.

Hopefully if another spearo PUB get together is set up I'll be able to get along and get more tips from the rest of you. As long as Shiny doesn't let anyone know that the 1st 3 times I dived I wore my suit inside out :-)

Hi All,
Haven't posted for a while, as the truth is, I haven't had anything worth telling you all about.
The same can't be said for Shiny et al. Congratulations on some top fish!

I have just ordered a new suit. I have gone for a Mares 3.5mm suit as I want to cut down on weight [I am currently built like Homer Simpson, but not quite as toned!]

The suit should be with me by Friday and I thought I would try it out down at Sandy Bay. Even though I live in Exmouth I have never dived there. Has anybody got any advice for Sandy Bay????

Tip get a open call camo suit you can't go wrong:)

I lent someone a wetsuit & they were struggling to get in to it & do it up. They had it back to front:duh

I was'nt really paying much attention to what he was saying,my mind was on the new ground we were going to try.Then i stopped and thought,its a brand new made to measure ellios suit,it shouldnt go on that easy with out the water-conditioner mix.I looked at him then,he was struggling and cursing trying to button the flap up.He had the open cell on the outside,what a greenhorn.The suits fine now he's using it the right way with no more marks on it,and he uses the water mix to get it on with.You see what i have to but up with lol
I want tell you his latest greenhorn cockup,it will have you all running for cover!!
