South Devon Report 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Nice to get back from a weekend away and see all the reports. Lovely fish Scott, well done. I reckon you'll crack the double figures before the season is out.
 
Well done scott, that bass is a beauty! nice to know that their still about as the temp drops.

quick question, I just got a new float for spearfishing and it came with two flags the first is the Alpha flag which is blue and white and the other is the Bravo flag which is red with a diagonal white stripe - which one do I use???????
 
Hi all

I managed to get in today on high tide. The viz was excellent and lots of small fish around. I did have a decent mullet. l saw plenty of bass but nothing of any great size. I'm going to have a go just before low tide tomorrow for a couple hours.

So I had a go today at low tide. I had 2 pollack and a small bass. I saw less bass but bigger ones. They always seem to know when I'm at the end of my air or I spook em still. I was going through a sandy based kelp gulley and I suddenly realised there was a huge fish in front of me, he seemed to fill the gulley and I still missed. I panicked and shot right away, I'm not sure if it was a bass or mullet but it was herculean. I know I'm gona get ripped but it was big. Probably a wrasse or a mirage. I wish I had the new hero 3 camera with me to have proved the point. I was thinking of having another go tomorrow but I think I'll give it a miss as I'm struggling with a cold :-( A mate said there is a swell coming in the weekend so I guess that keeps us from diving.....or does it?

Dived today in fairly good viz. made the half hour swim to my chosen spot, found plenty of wrasse and small pollack, bumped into a bass around the 3lb mark but left him as I was after cod......... didnt find any so came out empty handed.

water was colder than over the weekend, 10 degrees C had 5mm socks and gloves on but only lasted 2 hours


Heres a short clip of my first test for my headcam. I move my head far to much and it ruins the clip a bit but im sure it will work out.

Hi Scott - have you posted/can you post a bit more about your hero headcam - am interested. Is that white box on your arm anything to do with it?

Here you go James.

Ive glued the bracket onto the mask as the double sided tape didnt last.

Housing can clip on and off so its not permanent and moves up and down with a tightening screw.

I dont even feel it on the mask, very little drag and no extra weight, The camera is so small and light you dont notice it.

the white box is actually a mirror ( on permanent loan from the girlfriends handbag) this is so I can check to see the camera is recording.

The hero cam is a very simple camera but the video is good. I can send you a dvd with some clips on if you like. Youtube degrades the video quite a bit.

It doesnt handle low light very well and the sound is a bit pants. When its mounted on the gun and I shoot it makes a noise that sounds like youve just hit it with a hammer rofl but mounted on the mask is fine.


The spots not wembury but not far off.

I'd get a patent on that quick Scott! Proves that the Superocchio still rocks. Anyone else seen the front cover of today's WMN? The MOD have discharged 280 ltrs of Tritium contaminated (i.e. radioactive) waste into the water at Devonport. Watch out for the glowing fish Plymouth spearos!
 
tritium has got a very short lifespan and easily passes through the body,no need to panic,but your closer to the truth than the TONS of liquid that the radio was reporting.

No wonder the bass see me before I see them, it is from working in those radioactive areas eh. rubbble jetty must be thick with big pollack now. tight lines.

Warm water and mullet that glow so that you can see them in bad viz?

Must be something to do with that radioactive leak!
 
Just bought a new rib ( 3.3 m ) and I'm going to get a bigger motor for the new year. Thinking about a Mercury 8 hp two stroke. Had a Johnson 3.4 on my Avon 3m sport. And to be fair it was a quality little motor but just diddnt have enough poke. Whats the general feeling out there on the mercs ? Also I transport the boat and motor around in the back of a mk3 Golf, so size does matter. But am i right in thinking that there isn't much difference between an 8 or 15 hp ?
Had a go on Sunday around Babbacombe, and diddn't see much in the areas where Ive had fish before. Most of the kelp has died and the Bass are becoming harder to find down there. Local fisherman are catching lots of Whiting and Cod at the moment in the bay. And one of my fish suppliers at work is still catching double figure bass from Shaldon beach, using live prawn.
 
I've got a 15hp Merc (2001 model) and it's a great little motor. It pushes my 3.4m Zodiac along at about 15knots with 5 people in. Looking at my manual it looks like the 9.9hp is identical to the 15hp except the carb. The 8hp has a different cylinder capacity but appears to be the same in every other aspect - can't find weights listed but I'm guessing its physical size will be about the same in any case.
 
Shiny, if the radiation makes the fish abnormally big I may start hitting a few of the f**kers. I should have went with you today after all eh.
