South Devon Report 2008

Tong and I had a dive near Plymouth yesterday. We had to drive around a bit to find a sheltered spot that was out of the wind and swell. The water was quite cold, and as Tong forgot his hood and gloves, he was out after 15min. The viz was iffy, about 4-5", but it was really overcast so it seemed worse than it was. We found six nice big scallops, but saw no fish except one wrasse. It was good to be in the water, though we did get some very curious looks from passers by.

Have a great Christmas everyone!

Im not surprised you and greenhorn didn't have time for a dive if you were busy 'plugging' each other with your oil skins on! :t

And i hope it didn't hurt Bish too much when he lost 'his one'. . . rofl

Merry Christmas everyone,

Ian

Merry XMas all.

I'm down your way over the christmas period, visiting family in Cawsand. I gather there's an easterly due to blow in shortly after christmas day, so I was gonna try to get in the water on boxing day before it arrived - any suggestions on where I might find some fish around Plymouth at this time of year?

Hey Gaz

I just spoke to Shiny, he is out in his boat with his brother and up to now they have 5 fish in the boat. No doubt the picture evidence will be posted later, and I'm sure he'll give you some advice. We are planning to get in somewhere tomorrow for a spear sesh. We'll avem boy.....

Cheers fellas,

It's 10.45 pm on christmas day, and I've just arrived in Cawsand and had a quick look at the water - it's choppy and the wind looks as though its picking up from the north east, so maybe I'm too late already. I'll try and find somewhere sheltered for a quick spear tomorrow; failing that, I've brought my surfboard too!

Greenhorn, are you going in from the shore? If so, would you mind giving me a rough indication where and when - understand you want to keep it to yourself though.

I'll let you know how it all went tomorrow (if I manage to get in).

Merry X-Mas,

Gaz D

Impressed that you went in on christmas day, Shiny.

Was gonna jump in at Portland myself, on the way down, but didn't really have time fit it in (plus didn't fancy the earache that I could see my girlfriend was getting ready to give me!)

Merry X-mas

Ha, ha,

Know what you mean - a quick dip can turn into a day trip in the blink of an eye.

Good luck tomorrow fellas,

Keep us posted on how it goes.

The other half bought me a fish kettle for christmas so Packed the car this morning and drove off to a chilly Boxing day dive to bag something to steam!!!!!!

After getting blown around in the car park I made the long walk to the beach and the 1/2 mile swim to the reef. Water although cold was very doable and managed just short of 3 hours. Viz was zero on the beach but better out on the reef maybe 4 meters at best.

Bumped into a really nice shoal of schoolies with the odd bigger bass hanging in the background (see video)

lined up on a 3lb+ bass pulled the trigger.... NOTHING... bloody safety was on ( I never use the safety) roflroflrofl

After kicking myself I spent 10 minutes finding the shoal again by which time the sd card in my camera had fulled up (typical)

Stayed on the surface this time and bagged 2. :friday
2 bass in December WELL CHUFFED. both weighed 2 1/2 pounds gutted and scaled.

Hi Gaz

obviously I didn't dive, and as Shiny said we have been fishing the plugs for the bass. We went this morning. Shiny had 1 his brother had 2 and greenhorn had 0

It was good though, a bit of Xmas banter.

Hi Scott

Great catch well done mate. Cool being able to see the shoal as well, keep the clips coming. The xmas Bass will go down well.

Hello chaps,

Cawsand Bay was blown out today, so went the other side of Rame to drop in at Polhawn Fort (by the old pilchard factory), in Whitsand Bay. Nice and sheltered from the easterly, and the vis was a good 6 meters plus (maybe even as much as 10 m in places, to my surprise). Took a dogfish on my first dive (about 2lb - ordinarily I'd leave them alone, but I'm visiting my old man and he likes them).

Was in for about one and a half hours before I started to lose the daylight. Didn't see anything else worth spearing (although there could well have been stuff there). Still plenty of kelp about, and several large wrasse (if you like that sort of thing).

Despite the lack of fish I had a good day - enjoyed diving in the relatively good vis, exploring the holes, and just generally getting a bit of practice in.

Congratulations on the bass, Scott. Very impressed -and it also helps to keep the enthusiasm up, seeing people take nice fish at this time of year.

Any chance letting us in on where you took them? Understand if you don't want to.

All the best everyone,

Gaz

Dived today, wind died down a bit and viz was very good 6- 10 meters but bloody freezing. Saw no bass, found loads of 1lb size pollack in a big shoal. bagged a nice lobster that was hiding under a ledge. missed a flounder then another and got out as I was starting to really feel the cold. Time to get a thicker wetsuit ( I keep saying that) still lasted 3 hours.
