South Devon Report 2011

Hi guys.

Quick report from Heybrook Bay. Just been in and vis was a good 6-8m. Wind picking us from the SW which made swimming with a float a pain. Say a few small bass and some small mullet tight in to the rocks. Lots of bait fish and a few cuttlefish about but no takers. Every time I fish heybrook I have to really scratch around to find anything worth having a go at. Any advice?

Hi all, went back to bigbury with a load of mates. Vis was 4m at most and there was a decent swell running, this coupled with finishing my degree the night before caused me to get motion sickness and then ended up feeding the fish haha. I have got to say that being sick while floating around is not a nice feeling so i will be going to get some drugs soon to stop a repeat performance. Fish wise there were plenty of small pollock around and i took one of the larger one, then i saw a massive spider crab, just over 7 inches across the back which we barbecued on the beach. We ended up staying till midnight on the beach, it was a quality day.

Much as I would like to have shot this fine Angler fish for myself, the honour has to go to my old dive buddy Tong, who stabbed it with a 4" knife and then wrestled it into a bag. It weighed in at 9.5kg.

Great going Chris!

Most interesting fish for a long time seen and quite some size! Free or tanks for Tong?

Just spoken to him. He was on scuba at the time, so no HOF for Tong! He got it on the sand just off the side of a local wreck in 23m of water. Apparently it took three of them to get this fish in the bag :blackeye.

I was at Babbacombe on Thursday (one of 3 places I tried in a 5 hour search for vis and fish) and I met a group of scuba divers about to do some training dives.

Their leader, who was more friendly than the average Babbacombe scuba diver, asked me if I was fishing and then rather nervously mentioned that he had heard of an incident at Thurlestone and wondered where I was planning to go? Sounds like word has got around and we are all under suspicion now.

I assured him that there are never any fish in the training area and I would be nowhere near him rofl

While we are on a safety theme watch out for a big gill net at Broadsands :rcard It is right through the stringweed area that I wanted to check out for bass :rcard :rcard :rcard

sounds like typical Babbacome divers
