South Devon Report 2011

[Amateur Spearo]

A few trips to report. I put the hours in this weekend. Was up 4.30 Saturday morning after hearing of some big bass being caught at a well known shore mark but after two hours of angling and catching sweet fa I donned my wetsuit and took to the water. Unfortunately, despite there being a few bass they were all postage stamp sized but did shoot three medium sized mullet. Someone mentioned that having a mullet attached to your belt brings the other fish around and that certainly seemed true as if I stayed still they would all circle me. Anyway Saturday promised much delivered little.

Sunday. Drove over half hour before realising I'd left my fins at home. Doh! Ended up picking up the fins and going closer to home where in truth I expected very little but ended up with three bass. Two around 2.5 and the biggest one 5lb4oz all within ten yards of the shoreline. The freezer is stocking up nicely for the winter. Bring on Saturday's start of the scallop season.....

As Mr. X said we are looking like a good weekend for at least warm and possibly some Vis? Me and a couple of mates are going to head south for the weekend, any heads up? we are undecided whether to head towards Chesil (bringing rods aswel) or to head down towards salcombe? fingers crossed for some vis.

Just been to Chesil this morning and the water was brown and there was an almost-surfable swell! I'd head West.

Went to bovisand this morning ,could not see the sea for fog from 100 metres away,but heard it as soon as i got out of the car,about 4 foot surf crashing onto the rocks ,looked into the harbour ...about 2 foot vis , so went back to torbay for sunshine,calm water and about 3 metres vis ,and no fish !!! It looks like west facing coasts are more suitable to surfing than spearing this weekend !!!

Well done, that's a fine pair you've got there.
As far as eating goes I think you'll find they are about the ideal weight.

I could only see the one,it wasnt until i started to pull the spear back out i seen i had two on. I had it happen a few days before from the same hole. I shot at a trigger fish in the hole and when i pulled it out i had the trigger plus a old wellington boot all with one shot.

I understand your pain

First crazily busy with work, then no viz and now a cold that seems to have gone into my chest.
