Amazing day today in Bantham bay. Got in and the vis was pretty good at around 6m and more in places, I immediately saw masses of wrasse. I had never seen a shoal of wrasse before but there were hundreds of them, shame I dont like them really. I was holding out for my first Bass and I wasnt disappointed. I was buzzed by a shoal very soon after getting in. At one point I looked up and there was another spearo 10m away, was it anyone from here? I feel the need to apologise because I felt as though I intruded on them by coming too close, sorry. After that it got even better as i shot my first bass, a small one at 42cm but legal. Happy I headed in then in less than 2m in the shallows I spied my first ever flounder followed immediately by another one within 30 seconds.
All in all it was a stunning day out. Anyone have any good recipes for flounder?

Well done Greg. I got in at Looe this afternoon before work. Nearly as many spearo's in the water as mullet down there. Well two other spearo's but stacks of mullet. I couldn't resist taking one nice sized one but I was hoping for bass. I saw a number of small ones and one decent one which I shot at and missed. Still it was good to get in. Away all weekend so hopefully back in on Monday or any other day that has good conditions.

Hi All,
In tonight on the rise at spot B and it was a total contrast to the other day - very fishy. I only saw one bass and a shoal of mullet but all good sized fish but tons of wrasse and pollack in the kelp. Lots of tide ripping and better vis so looking good for the coming week.

I had a nice refreshing dive at Spot H this morning. We got in at 9am, so had the pick of the parking spots. Viz was great, 10-12m, with a bit of current running. Absolutely to fish seen except a lone mullet, and no lobsters or crabs found. There was a lot of kelp covering the holes, but they were all vacant.
We had a late night dive on Friday night at Spot W. We dived all over the ledges and not a single bass about, so we kept to the sand, and hand speared a few flatties each.

Thats weird as it was at spot H where i dived yesterday and there were loads about and crabs too - wouldve brought one back but didnt have my catch net. Funny how much difference a day makes. I have never managed a flattie from spot H, although I often look for em. Lobbies evade me totally.......
Big plans today and a early start on my own. 7 miles from the launch i realised i had forgot my dive belt and harness. Nothing else to do other than turn around and go in. I didnt fancy going miles out after doing 14 miles aready in the boat,instead i thought i would try for a turbot i have been longing to get. I had a few tips on where to look but it was all hit and miss with lots of hard work and 14m diving. 7 hours later i had had enough. I did see a turbot but only 2lb size. I also got a couple of bass, flounder and a big spider crab. The best was saved until the last dive where i had 5 plaice, 5lb5oz,5lb4oz,5lbs,4lb1oz and 3lb13oz.

That's some serious fishing there nick, do you have a pet plaice too? 14m dives - I'm not sure I have ever gone that deep never mind been able to have any bottom time to fish once I got there. I think you could give most of us a masterclass In spearing.

Martin your brother Dave was a inspiration. I usually have my bass head on when i go diving but out of respect to Dave im going to push the standards for the flatfish trophy. I know Dave would like something special to win it. I could spend the rest of the season looking for a nice Turbot and not find one while somebody else could accidently find one.
The conger was on the side of a drop off hunting through the kelp. I looked down the side of the drop off with the hope of a big pollack or coalfish but seen the big blue shape in the kelp,first i thought it may of been a bass but soon realised what it was. I had 2 guns with me,the second unloaded clipped on with a longline clip about 2m behind the other gun. I was using 2 guns while drift fishing a large shoal of bass. It was 17m and i did think i have to shot him and stone him or have the chance of losing both guns if he goes deeper down the drop off. You usually have a few seconds from when you shoot conger to when they go mad so if you can turn his head in that time its half the battle. I tried for a stone shot with my 90 then went for the surface. At first i wasnt sure he was on because i couldnt feel him dragging behind me. He soon came to life near the surface. There were a few charter boats near by,the seas was flat calm with this conger going nuts on the surface. I had both thumbs in his gill holes and was shouting to my brother who was fishing about 60 m away. I held his head high and finned hard to keep him high out of the water,his body was wrapped all around me thrashing and splashing. I dont think the guys in the charter boats had ever seen anything like it lol

did you get the plaice at the spot I told you about? I am getting in this afternoon after a weekend indoors. You can get a nice Turbot at Mike the Greeks chippy where we grew up lol. Good to see your posting the full story of the dives again. I'll post later on how it goes this afternoon. God knows what might happen eh.......

hi all just got back from a week away managed to get in today with father got 4 nice bass and he got 2 seen lots. missed a few viz ok nearly got mod down by a boat
