South Devon Report 2011

Well, I've had a couple of dives the past two days. Thursday I took out the re-banded Rabitech Apex with new float-line and float. I must've got used to the old bands, coz the new ones were a b*tch to load. All was well once a mullet swam into range and got walloped by the first shot. There were bass about, but they were very wary, and the viz was just a bit too clear to draw them in. No lobsters or crabs though, of any size, which I though was odd.

Today was much the same, though the bass and mullet had vanished, only to be replaced by lots of small Pollock. So I did a bit of under reef, over reef, wombling free and came home with the standard fishing weights, an Abu spoon and a shiny copper artillery shell gas check.

Just got back from a nice night dive. I have been on holiday in ireland but didn't take my gear with me So was gagging for a dive. Visibility was great and the water gin clear tonight. Started off hunting the rocks and gullies but couldn't see any bass. Came across a decent sized blonde ray and I considered taking it except it was early in my dive and I didn't fancy it flapping around on my stringer so left it alone. Then I came across a few flounder bit decided to leave them too as I really wanted bass. Checked all the usual spots and worked along the shallows to no avail. So with time running out I decided to take a flounder, and then came across a red mullet so had him too. Checked the gullies once more before deciding to have one last run along the shallows. I came up on a bass and was to eager to take the shot and hit the sand in front of him and he darted off. I reloaded and headed off in the direction the bass went and a few moments later I lined him up again. This time I didn't miss and stoned him through the head. I thought he was dead but as I was putting him on the stringer he wriggled free and started swimming around in circles. I chased after him and grabbed him with my hands before finishing him with the knife. I came across another blonde ray but again left it alone. On my way back along the shallows I managed another bass and a flounder. Just as I was on my way out I shot a nice cuttlefish, so all in all a nice mixed catch

Hi All,

Been quiet posting lately but I have been out and about. More bass around than previously and have been doing quite well on the mullet. lost a big lobby, he was a slippery bugger so gutted about that but quite good really. freezer stocking up nicely for my grandparents!

Hi all,

I have work this coming Wednesday in Chudleigh S Devon and will be free from about 1pm onwards. Can anyone recommend a spot (send me a PM) taking into account the tides and wind direction that afternoon etc... I think the tide was high ebbing to low and winds from the SW.

Lee you wont be too far from Torbay, you could give babbacombe a go as its sheltered from the South westerlies. You might be able to get in Meadfoot but the wind will be smacking it face on so the viz may very well be crap.

Teignmouth is still brown from the rain and with more rain been given for the week I would say no. I was out yesterday on the boat watching a race and its less than foot.

Budleigh is always an option, it fairs better in SW winds than Torbay and is not to far from where you'll be staying

Just got back from 2 weeks camping at Bolberry in the South Hams. It was a family holiday so it wasn't diving all the time but I did have several short sessions at various beaches as wind direction allowed.

Found a nice lobster just walking around at Hallsands Apart from that it was a mixture of pollack, mullet and bass. I could have shot a lot more fish than I did but we could only eat so many and didn't have a freezer in our tent. Some times I just took the camera instead of the speargun. No big bass seen at all which was a disappointment as I dived some places where I really expected to see them. My biggest fish was one of the mullet which was 5lb+ but as I had no scales I'll never know its actual weight.

Saw two spearos at Hallsands yesterday afternoon, one of whom was so observant he managed to swim full speed into my daughter rofl Anybody want to own up?

I know its not in Devon or even in the UK, but the following deserves a mention. One of my dive buddies' (Alix Leclerc on here) dad lives in Brittany and regularly goes spearfishing on the wrecks around their stretch of coastline. He has had rather a good week it seems, targeting Stone Bass up to 30KG that ended up bending the spears. Yesterday he shot and landed a 43KG Meagre.

Hi all,
It's been a while but finally got in after a working holl. DIY just takes over!
Our friends departed the beach @ portwrinkle, time 2 make the most of it. Wind had unfortunately picked up but that wasn't going 2 stop me.
Vis was good heading out over the sand then 2m or less around the rocks, shame. Despite my best efforts I spotted a lone bass but he saw me 1st!

Saw 2 other spearo's spoke 2 one. No bass. Was feeling a bit sick on the way back, may b it was 2 rough 4 me!
