Popped over to a local spot (Torbay ) Thursday eve to check out the vis and it looked good ,and with a fine day forecast Friday I thought I would get in early Sat morn ,however standing on the shore at 6.30 in the morning I see 1-2 foot of swell and brown water ( what an abysmal summer this is !!) I went home got my kayak and decided to go to a spot in North Cornwall instead . Great vis 8+ metres ,calm sea but strong offshore wind , found some very sheltered corners below the cliffs with deepish water 10 -15 metres and got 2 bass ,1 pollack and 2 plaice ,none large but enough for a few meals . There were quite a few plaice but most I considered too small ( although MLS is only 22 cms !!) very nice underwater topography ,big rocks ,kelp,caves ,sand ,gravel etc so a good day after all !!
When you have two of similar size together, the female is wider across the carapace - also the coral when cooked. I didn't know to be fair but my old man was with me and he said straight away that one was a female. I think there is a more sure fire way of telling if you have just the one, something to do with the appendages underneath.

The females have a much more flared tail, for holding the eggs!

I attempted Brixham and Berry Head today and found the vis v poor. Was hoping for a better day in the North tomorrow but that sounds bad too. Mmmm

Got in this morning in Torquay, viz very patchy but managed a few mullet & 1 bass. In for about 2 hours but just became impossible to make out the fish from the kelp, apart from the odd glimpse of a tail. Once I couldn't see the end of the spear, decided to call it a day.
Lots of scum & debris in the water on my way back in, so don't know if there has been a discharge somewhere?
Posts a bit thin on the ground at the mo, so thought I'd post my catch. No monsters unfortunately.
Did take a bass from south hams last week but school boy error saw my speared Dover sole, glide back into the depths & looked a good 3lb.
I've spent the week watching Shiny show me how it should be done.

Must admit swimming through it was pretty yuk!!
Off with the family tomorrow to Bigbury so I'll have a quick dip. Funny place took 1 bass & lost my Dover sole there last week but not much else seen, few small bass & odd mullet. I'm sure there are some decent fish around there, I just need to find them!!!

Got a few good fish from down there recently. Not seen a decent bass yet. Plenty of 2- 2.5lb ers on the top of the tide. Here's a couple of pollack from about the 11m mark. Given the tempura treatment later on that day

Was plannin on gettin a dive in after work tomorrow in budleigh or somewhere near there, any idea where me and my mate might find a little bit of viz? Don't mind driving that bit further it avoids the -1m viz I've been hearing about! Any pointers would be graciously received.

I know Bigbury is a long way from East Devon but just in case you we're thinking of driving that way - DON'T
SW today poor viz as you would expect, saw one 3lb bass as it dissappeared into the gloom!!
Nothing else seen, Torquay had alot of muck around the shore on Sunday but managed some fish & Teignmouth way still looks very churned up.
I'd take a dip near to where you're working as viz has been very hit & miss, that way the pub will be that much closer.
Works for me anyway!!

Haha thanks for the heads up anyway scrumpy, unlucky on the lonesome 3lber!
I guess we'll just have to take a gamble and hope for the best, just itching to try my new fins and suit out anyway so should be an enjoyable dive regardless, dinner would of course be a huge bonus!
