Reasonable vis of 2-5m in Torbay today. I was primarily on a photo mission to test out new strobe arms but took time to shoot two mullet. Sorry no pictures of the mullet as I got home to a hungry family and had to cook them straightaway!

Quick viz report for the bay natural arch area 3 -4 m but milky. Not complaining though after the period of unsettled weather we've had.
Dropped in for 2 hours after work as the light faded, found some mullet but not much else seen, few pollock around the 1lb mark & couple brown crabs but not worth taking. Some lovely coloured big wrasse
No great size mullet best about 3lb others 1.5lbs.

Same place I went on Thursday and similar vis. I only managed two mullet and both the size of your smaller ones though!

I was out fishing off the boat yesterday around Torbay. Water was flat calm. didnt take the dive gear as I had a bloke from work onboard but it looked promising.

Stopped to have a chat with one of the boats doing cover for the scubies and they reckoned the vis was crap but doable.

Had pollack and makeral which are always welcome :)

Still plenty of bass about. I have been doing a lot of lure fishing and getting good bass. I had a PB last week on lures with a 13lb1oz bass and another at 13lbs. Great fun on light spinning gear

Hello all. I'm looking for some advice or help or anything! Me and a friend have been less than successfully trying to spear fish since July. We have had fourteen dives together and managed to catch plenty of crabs and scallops and even netted a few prawns. It's been a blast but between us, in that time, we've barely managed to find a few fish worth hunting. We're currently swimming out from shore, usually in the torbay area and typically diving in around 5m of water. As far as fish are concerned, we see plenty of small pollack and wrasse around, a few dogfish which we've managed to catch by hand but made sure they go back safe and we see usually see a few bigger wrasse on our dives, which we tend to leave alone. We can exceed 3 minutes in our static breath holds but in practise, we manage probably just under a minute underwater in the sea. We have tried summer dives, winter dives and night dives - not dawn dives as my mate isn't the morning type!

Could someone help us try to find the fish we're looking for? Don't know whether we're fishing too close to shore, fishing too shallow, not staying down long enough or if we're just simply being a pair of bozos!

...Do feel free to point this out if this is the case!

Sounds like you are not doing too badly with the scallops & crabs, but the point of spear fishing, is, I suppose.......... spear fishing.

I wouldn't worry too much, it all comes to us eventually, some quicker than others, in my case not so quick; but this year has been the most prolific season for me. Only been three years......... I suppose out of the 25 or so dives this year I have come back empty about 5 times.

Sounds like your breath hold is not too bad.
All I can say is keep very, very quiet. Try not to blow bubbles under water of any kind when you dive, try not to knock anything on the floor of the sea bed or rocks, clashing of fins clattering of gun on bottom or rocks. Silent dives & settle on the bottom, no heavy breathing or loud snorkel clearing or purging the snorkel through the water so that it blows a bubble in the water.

When diving & settling on the bottom maybe just close your eyes for a little bit to compose yourself, then open them. Return to the surface quietly & try not breath hard when you surface. All these things may help in being quiet. You may very well do most of that, but if you go out & concentrate on being quiet you will be surprised how much noise you may make.
In weed swim slowly, no jerky movements, you see a fish out of the corner of your eye, do not move your head quickly as this will fleg the fish, (I found this helpful) slow movements, scanning left to right.

Try searching the internet of what to do as there is plenty info out there, although you might have to think about your search words, "Bass" & "techniques" gave me some good guitar riffs.........

To get you started, try this link, I cannot really remember what is on it, but I saved it as a fav on my pc, so must have been fairly useful:

Also, may be useful:

Like I said I I know there is some other good stuff out there, just search.

Scott

Thanks Scott

That's great information. I think we probably do make a bit too much noise at the moment! Aside from the good wrasse and dogfish, all the more 'edible' fish all seem to be under a pound. Do the bigger fish tend to get spooked more easily? Although we try to cover as much ground as possible, could we just be looking in the wrong places?

Cheers

The reason inshore fish grow big is because they are the most adept at not being caught! Bigger fish are definatly more cautious. In my experience smaller fish can be called in to you by making grunting noises in your throat while larger fish tend to swim on past. Try not to look directly at the fish as this can spook them. Most of my fishing is done close to shore in less than 5m of water with the biggest fish found around large rocks in less than 2m. Sounds like you could do with a local mentor to kick start your catching and perhaps show you some different marks.

Thanks, Scallywag. I've definitely noticed that staring directly at fish does seem to creep them out a bit! Contrary to the advice of countless shore fishermen who endeavour to cast as far away from land as possible, I've noticed that a lot of fish seem to stay very close in. That said, I'm surprised to hear that the bigger ones can be found there too. I'll definitely have to have another look around rocky areas. Is it worth checking sandy areas for flatfish, at all? You mention that it would be best to learn from someone who could show is the ropes; have you got any suggestions who might be able to help?
