South Devon Report 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
My best bass of the year was 7lb 3 in about 6ft of water, spooked even bigger double figure fish in water I could stand up in!!
I don't know any of the spearos from up country (Devon) but I'm sure somone reading would be able to help out.
I've called it a day for this year and am now in the workshop making new toys for next season.
Keep at it and it will click.

Could someone help us try to find the fish we're looking for? Don't know whether we're fishing too close to shore, fishing too shallow, not staying down long enough or if we're just simply being a pair of bozos! ......................................................................................................................
Spearfishing , like many things is not as easy as it may seem !!! If you are reading the catch reports on here ,then comparing your own efforts and finding it a bit demoralising then bear in mind the reports are the best moments of the best spearos !! In reality spearfishing is not really a very efficient way of catching fish ( except maybe for a few select individuals ) Equipment ,technique, depth and breatholds are important , however the main thing is Knowledge (this can take a long time to acquire ) knowing where to go ,when to go, at what time of day and state of tide etc are crucial for success . Fish are a bit unpredictable and are not willing targets ! I just enjoy the diving and exploring underwater and take a gun with me in case I come across something ,and then manage to hit it !!!! But continuous effort gets results ,if it was easy it would be a bit boring really would'nt it ? I will not be in again until April ( I do not like coming home empty handed AND freezing !!) and fish are harder to come by in winter as well . But keep at it and when you get your first silver fish it will feel a defining moment !

I appreciate the realistic advice. I'm still coping with the temperatures for up to about three hours at the moment so, as you say, I am taking the time to enjoy my dives and yes, still hoping that something decent will swim past. Fortunately, I'm not fed up with shellfish yet! In any case, I'm having a lot more fun 'attempting' to spearfish than being persistently rained on and covered in slimy bait from the shore. Plus, I haven't had to disgorge a hook out of my clothing for some time!

On an unrelated topic...

I have been asked by the science department of the university that I work in to see if I can collect a couple of urchins for the purposes of a marine biology study. While I've seen plenty of starfish around, I've never really spotted any urchins. If anybody has seen any around the area, could you perhaps point me out to where I could find them?

Many thanks

They seem to be more common the further west you go. I know where there are plenty in Pembrokeshire and I've seen a few in Cornwall but can't remember seeing many in Devon (apart from heart urchins)

I live in Bristol so I'm more or less in between Pembrokeshire and Devon, I had heard there were areas that were protected in Pembrokeshire? If you know of a good place, would you be able to send me a PM for an area where I can find both urchins and starfish? Many thanks.

Hi, am planning to go for a dip in Torbay tomorrow afternoon - will be getting in the water around low tide. I don't hold out high expectations of seeing a load of fish but am keen to have a look nonetheless. Given the location, time of year and low tide - can any of you more experienced people point me in the right direction as to where I may have the best chance? I will be going in from the shore. Any advice would be ace and much appreciated!!:)
(And yes - I expect it to be cold!!)

Thanks Lee, much appreciated. Have PM'd back, if you're wondering why you have 2 messages from me that say near enough the same thing it's because I typed one out this morning on my phone that I didn't think had actually sent and was keen to reply to catch you before your dive tomorrow!!

For everyone else - Torquay dive yesterday had milky vis, 10 degree water and not a single fish seen (of any species). Must try harder!

Cheers,

Dave.

Will have an update in just under 24 hours, going for a dip tomorrow afternoon.

Brill.....ooops........thanks hope things are good conditions are favourable.

Had a good dive in Torquay this afternoon albeit hampered by some problems with my float line, something I need to sort out as bought a new float recently. Vis was only up to about 2 meters but better than last week. Didn't see any fish worth catching - no bass or mullet, plenty of wrasse and small fish around. Spent just under 2 hours in, hands and feet quite numb with cold when out but was still fun.

Scrumpy - spent my time around the two rocks you recommended. Thanks for the tip, great site and walkable from my office!!

Denian - on the basis of this afternoon I'd say it's worth a crack, not sure what the forecast ahead is like though as won't have the opportunity to get in for probably until after christmas. Good luck if you manage to get in.

Cheers,

D.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who can't stay in for more than two hours! Has anybody managed to find any good ways of keeping warm in these frigid waters?
