South Devon Report 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Got in twice on Friday and managed two flounder and a Plaice. Vis was ok but there seemed to be a bit of a bloom on already. I spent about 30 minutes trying to get a lobster out of a hole only to be defeated. Apart from the flatties taken and a shoal of mullet, nothing else seen and still pretty bloody cold!

They are out there its just being lucky and finding one.
I take mates with me some times and knowing my luck it will be one of them who finds one. I do all the hard work finding the spots then a mate gets the reward lol.

Well, Nick, I've told you the story (and given you the location!) that I read about the guy who took two whoppers from down your way a few years ago.

I've told this story before, as well, but I'll tell it again anyway:

I was chatting to two anglers a couple of years ago who told me a story about what happened one night when they when they were fishing in my local area (they gave me the exact location, but I don't want to start a stampede, so I'll keep it under my hat for now). Apparently a scuba diver turned up next to their mark, said a quick 'hello', and then jumped into the water with his lamp.

They were beginning to get a bit chilly, so retired to their car (where they pretty much forgot about the diver). A short time later they heard someone calling for help. They suddenly remembered the diver and rushed back to the water to see if he was in trouble. They found him struggling to get out with a 'huge' turbot that he had pulled up from the bottom. Apparently he had stabbed it through the head with his knife, and was telling them that there were 'loads of them down there'.

So I know that there are turbot in my area, somewhere, but I've always been a bit wary of the currents in the specific spot they gave me (especially after hearing a few horror stories!).

Someone remind me when the turbot come inshore again - I might just go down to that spot one night to have a look for them.

.

Yes i remember that story and the place. I do know of guys that have had big turbot there in years gone by. It is a known spot for them.
A monster of a turbot was taken about this time last year just out from where your parents live. It was one of the biggest landed down on the fish quay in years. The guy had him in a ray net.
I have found some good ground for them where a few are taken by anglers drifting. I did find turbot brill dovers lemons and plaice there but it was late in the season. From what i here the anglers get most of the better turbot early on in the season. I dont know if thats to do with when most are in or its because they havent been hammered by netters this early in the season. I did look one day last week and found the first plaice of the year there. Time will tell.

I spotted it but did not want to spoil... What gave it away for me was the lack of a FOM entry!

Although, knowing you Nick I would not surprised if at this time of year you did pull a flatfish out of the murkyness that was that big!

Cheers

Ryan

Hi all, in again yesterday near the mewstone and visibility has dropped significantly, the crabs must know the warm weather is over as they have all disappeared! Not even a mullet seen by me or the guy in before me, the day before there was plenty of life, ah well.

Hi All,

Just got in, managed two hours today up and over the high. Came home empty handed but the dive was enjoyable. Vis up to 7 metres mostly around 4-5. Saw lots of wrasse and all of a good size, many up and over 5lb. Hundreds of dogs literally piled up in crevices or laid out on the pebbles in groups of a dozen or more. Spotted two Topknots pirouetting in mid water which was oddly wonderful. They were totally oblivious and acted out their little scene for a good couple minutes. Awesome. Few edibles scuttling around but nothing worth picking. Water was mostly 10 degrees but did get to 11'c in some patches. Late rain cooled the air and not much more seen so got out amongst a shoal of baitfish near exit point. Great dive but numb hands and feet.

Hi folks, may i just offer a reminder that this year in addition to the Fish of the Month competition and Fish of the Year comp', there is also the species [speccie] hunt happening over the year. The discussion is here:
http://forums.deeperblue.com/uk-ireland/94073-f-o-m-f-o-y-discussion-thread-2012-a-2.html
and the few additional rules are given on each FoM entry page [basically enter the speccie hunt as you would for the fom - simple eh!].

I now realise that not everyone was aware of the speccie hunt, which is hopefully going to add some extra fun to the years fishing - there's no prizes - but it will be interesting to see who brings in the greatest variety of fish...

good luck! :)

Hi All,

Mixed day today catch wise; saw nothing for most of the day thn took all we had in the last half hour. Went over low water to make the most of holes over the spring tides but not to any avail. Came closer in to one of my favourite haunts and Bingo! Water had noticeably cooled from the heavy hail storm yesterday and the fresh water had killed the spots East. Happy to spend the day exploring with Dave, North1 and a little feed to boot.

Well done Tribs, there have been very few catch/dive reports on the South Devon Report recently ,where is everyone ? Were there any Spider crabs around ? I was out in my kayak yesterday around Burgh Island and the vis was incredible ,I could see flatfish from the surface !!! ( just kayaking not fishing though )

Hey Mirror,

No spiders yet but reasonable amounts of brown crab seen. Viz was reasonable mostly and exceptional in some spots. No flats seen this time for me.

The Budleigh Massif" are trying our best, Crazywind, North1 and I are in now and started for the season. Was good to get some fish today, makes the cold water worth the bravery.

Hi All,

In again today, god bless my understanding wife! Different to yesterday, much less about it seemed. Swam a lot today leaving the boat ashore. Tried usual haunts and all came up empty. Swam on and then the tide came on, went back and checked my banker hole. Bingo, 4lb mullet-that will do. Felt colder, less seen, weather turning?

Hi all had dive at Sandy Bay yesterday the plankton soup was very thick,
anyhow the exercise did me good.
My main reason i am posting is to let anyone who is diving at the bay know they
are imposing a £5 parking fee:naughty as the bay is my playground and sometimes
i am up there every day, i am not a happy chappy.
Jolly.
