Has anyone been out for a dive / kayak and seen any viz in torquay?
I'm looking to go tomorrow morning (thurs) but think I'm kidding myself, looking better Friday onwards but desperate to get in.
Went in at Maidencombe on Sunday for an hour whilst family on the beach, very milky but came out with a 3.5lb mullet. It looked small in the shoal that passed me. The others must have been in the 4lb-7lb range but I didn’t see them again.
Saw another spearo heading out 'Hi'

Vis really was pretty poor so went crab hunting and came back with a couple of nice sized spiders and a couple of decent browns for tea. Was worth getting wet as it has been so long... bring back the nice gentle westerlies, surely we've passed of quota for wind this year?

Whats Maidencombe like? I walked there with friends from Teignmouth last weekend, looks like a nice place on dry land. Whats it like underwater? Much reef/boulders? What have you had there?
Hoping for a dip closer to Exeter tonight...here comes the Indian Summer ha ha!!!

I find Maidencombe a strange place having never seen that many fish there, but the few I have seen are decent in size.
I fish to the left off the beach & around the headland at high tide as there are many drop off points & large boulders to look under.
I find to the right of the beach very Q, but that might be just the times I've fished it. There is a good amount of kelp, which helps, & towards Watcombe /Torquay there are again good areas of rock, where I’ve taken some decent brown crabs.
I’ve been frustrated like most others this summer & have really struggled to find any decent fish, especially South Hams way.
Last few weeks been taking some good mullet but still the bass are in 1’s & 2’s & not of any size. I prefer to take the mullet rather than a barely legal bass – leave that too grow big for future ventures.
Whilst the viz has been so iffy I have stayed local, often diving after nights so if it is awful I’m only 20 minutes from home.
Further east Teignmouth/Dawlish which is usually my hunting ground, I’ve been in once with zero viz. Over in Exmouth yesterday and the water looked bright red, the Teign is the same.
I’ve been wanting to try a few night dives after reading the reports from the Dorset boys but with work/family/poor conditions still haven’t been in. My wife keeps reminding me about the torch I had to buy with Februarys pay & how it still looks lovely in it’s box. Women!!!!!

lee the vis around teignmouth is dire half a meter at a push. launched the boat at pollysteps and checked the vis all the wax to hopes nose and its crap. any1 dived thurlestone recently?

Going tomorrow with NW winds hoping for some calm sea if not great viz, will probably stay close to the shore around Torquay sea front or paignton way. After seeing a big shoal of bass early spring out of Salcombe, I've hardly seen one worth taking. The only 5lb+ seen couple days ago, just flicked it's tail & disappeared into the gloom. Lucky the family prefer mullet or are they just being kind. Missing my dives around Teignmouth, lets hope for a good end to the season.
Dived Thurlestone, Burgh island same day last week, hardly saw a fish! Swam best part around the island before realising shit! I'm not going anywhere. Ended up climbing up over the far side, throwing gun, fins, mask snorkel up every 6 feet or so & clambering up. Only tuffs of grass to hold onto & then finding gradient went almost vertical. Not a nice feeling with a weight belt around the front of my chest, helping me stay close to the rock face. Made it to the top gasping for air & holidaymakers looking on. Probably thinking look at that P***K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with scrumpy about Maidencombe, Mullet seem to cruise from headland to headland in a rough straight line so hanging above a boulder, right at the tips of the headland, looking down into the sandy channels seems to be a winning strategy. Had more mullet from on or near the surface round there than by diving down.
Had good crabs and lobster from the area to the right from the beach, as well. Normally dependable for something even if the vis is awful

Managed to sneak in today. Vis was 2-3 at best but quite fishable. Took a large mullet and could have taken more. Waiting as the mullet came in for bass to appear but they never did. This year has been shy of bass for me but lots of better pollack seen, strange. Line broke on the gun so got out as it was roughing up anyway.
Tribs, who also drowned his car key in his supposed waterproof pouch

Hi Scott,
Normally, I don't have any worries as I have a key with separate electric fob which I take off. My truck is in the garage for MOT so borrrowed my mates car. My dad lent me his new waterproof wallet which obviously shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite. Hench he binned it when I handed it back still dripping out. I now have to find the money to sort the key for my mate and god knows how much that will be. New speargun money gone me thinks and then some.

Got in this morning in Torquay as Scott said yesterday viz is dire Max 1m. Stayed mostly near the surface as zero after 6-8 ft. spent the first hour diving 10-15 feet max & could sense something swimming around me but not even worth a shot.
Decided this is worthless so stayed close in over rocks and ended up with 4 mullet, no great size but nice to come out with fish. Saves the walk of shame for another day. In for just over 2 hours
Headed for the 1/2-mile walk back to the car as refuse to pay Torbay council car park prices to find someone has stolen or thrown into the sea my totally knackered pair of sandals.
Needless to say my socks were shredded, why they would want them is beyond me.
Unless you’re really desperate to get in, I wouldn't bother.

Well done on getting in and getting some fish !! I went down the South Hams today (on motorbike) to check out possibilities for tomorrow , spoke to some scuba divers who reckoned it was 2-3 metres ,and milky /murky ,so I am not very inspired but I might head Looe way in the morning .

This is my first posting and first season spearfishing. Despite it obviously being a poor.summer for it have loved every dive and am hooked!
Not long been back from Thurlestone, vis was ok, about 4-5 meters and quite choppy. Came away with 2 decent bass and 3 ok pollock. My first bass so great trip for me.
