Spear fishing Cape Verde Islands, Sal

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Generally, the spearfishing is done from the local boats, they will take you out into the deep water where the game fish live.
You will need specialist equipment & a lot of experience to be able to do this.
There is some opportunity for shore diving but from my experience it is not that good.
You can have some great fun watching the sharks at night under the hotel lights, I have seen some huge shark just swimming around the pier in santa Maria!

Ask for Bafa, but as said by foxfish these guys are Pro's, but really nice guys and you will learn a lot.
You will need a 140cm + gun, a 5mm suit and your gear.
Be at the wooden pier at 5h45.
You need to find Bafa, Adriano or Silvio.
Enjoy.

FANTASTIC thread my friends!
i will be in cape verde islands on a 120' sailboat island hopping for about two weeks, i will also hit the places on the list below. i was wondering if any of you had information about any of these places?

· Porto Cervo, Sardegna
· Bonafaccio, Corsica
· Mahon, Menorca
· Palma de Mallorca
· Cartegena, Spain
· Gibraltar
· Safi, Morocco
· Agadir
· Canary Islands
· Cape Verde Islands
· Devil’s Island

i also have almost no blue water experiance. i have been on only two blue hunts and one was a tottal dud being as all we saw was a very pissed off 9 foot mako. and the second being amazing, with our group of 5 coming home with 3 jacks, 2 wahoo and 2 sailfish!! i was not lucky enough to get on of the sails but i shot a nice wahoo and a jack. i have no blue water equipment myself and was wondering if that would be a requirement before i went?

any tips would be helpfull. thanks in advance!

Hi there Capt Murphy,

I can only help you out for Sal, but sal is great for hunting, in 2 weeks you will be in time for the yellow fin tuna, sail fish, Wahoo and big mahi-mahi.
If you are going to Sal, send me a mail @ paul.de.clercq@gmail.com.
I have a friend who has just been to Boa Vista his email is kopakobana@gmail.com .

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Yannis,

Sharks are not a problem, they might take your fish, but when you see them just face them down, they rarely come close enough to be touched with your spear.
You need a 5mm suit in Sal, the water is warm, but the wind on your back will take it's toll, unless of course you have a good layer of fat:)
the spear fishing cam be amazing, you need to get the wooden pierre at 5h45 in the morning. The locals go out spearfishing. Take a blue water gun, 140cm. a float line and a buoy. The locals will take you out with them, think of taking gloves and booties for them. Any extra equipment will win you friends, they use Rob allen guns. Bands are high value.
Ask for Bafa, Sylvio or Antionio.
Forget about shore dives.
Remember never swim toward the wahoo, you dive to 7m deep and wait, they make one pass just out of range, then swim away in a big circle, only to come back to you the second pass will be 2-3m away, then you shoot. Avoid eye contact and never swim toward them.
Good luck,
Paul

Hey Paul, what you say is interesting as when I went to Sal back around 2000 there were no blue water local sperfishermen!
There were some very interested locales & plenty who dived the shore but it seemed all the fishermen used hand lines & dead baits
We went out with the hand line fishermen in their little narrow boats & in some really rough weather too!
There was one guy who was getting in the water with us & he was very keen to spear a fish, I believe that he did get a nice wahoo a few days after I left.

Oh I forgot to say that the biggest sharks we saw were in the surf at night just off the hotel on the left of the pier, the hotel had some bright lights shinning on the sea & we could clearly see huge tigers in the shallows!!
