Cod

do's anyone go for the cod in the pembroke area, i have a plate of steaming chips waiting

There are cod! They have been around since august (codling anyway) but you won't catch any spearing because the water isn't going to be clear until next season!
.............and although cod is over rated as an eating fish, pollack don't taste the same, they really dont!

Re: cod

shame about the vis, i know quite a few people are catching cod by rod & line around hobbs point in pembroke dock. that place is a no go area, dangerous tides etc

Just heard a report of a few decent bass being taken in West Wales! A full 5-6 weeks ahead of last year! Not long now!

I have only been out once during early Januray with a water temperature of 4 degrees. Had a great haul of scallops in 30 minutes.

Hi Daffydd that is early to to start getting bass, were they taken spearfishing, commercial or rod and line?

It's been one long dark winter :-(

It was a fella plugging on a very shallow reef in west wales. Alot of schoolies have started to be caught by fisherman along the Gower beaches but the 3lb'er is the first sizable one I have heard of!

Damn uni, I don't think I am going to be out at all until the end of May! Argh!!!!!!!!!

i'm currently working ast a trainee chef actually :(
i'm probably wrong, it's been a while since i had either and a lot of you guys on the forum know much better than me. maybe i picked up two pieces of battered cod by accident whne i had a side by side taste.

The cooking skills thing was a jibe at Ollie, (he's a chef.) :)
Pollack is becoming an 'in' fish for some top London restaurants, fetching £18+ for a dish.
I haven't had battered pollack but pan fried I'd put a pave from a large, fresh fish on a par with cod.
Sainsbury's sell pollack and chips in a box, but they call it Colin&chips.

Its not too difficult to tell battered pollock and cod apart, it is however quite difficult to say which i prefer. Either way if I have a slab of battered fish on my plate, some pea, and a piping hot bowl of chips im a happy man. Can't wait to grab the bike and head down Gower with the spinning rod, will give it a month though before I try, first bass I had last year was the 28th April, about 4lb taken on a storm shad. Fingers crossed for good viz this summer :)
