I'm going to cuba (cayo guillermo) february 5th to 12th. I will bring my freediving equipment, and of course, a speargun.

I know that cubans cannot spearfish and they can't bring tourists in their boats, but I wan't to know if anybody have some tips to make my way easier.

I will surely look for bugs, but I don't know much about the fish species there. I will dive from shore, or from a kayak, so if anybody can help me to plan some good hunts, tell me.

Thanks

Don't mean to be too harsh on you and please don't take it personally. I was born in Cuba. There are Cubans on the island that will eat rice and plantains for days because they quite frankly have no other choice. They live in Cuba and are unable to spearfish. If caught, they will be fined, sometimes beaten and imprisoned. However, tourist can bring there gear and with "dollars" or foreign currency can buy themselves to spots on the reef. Do you see the problem here? There are other options in the Caribean in places where the goverment doesn't exploit and repress their citizens in the hell hole that is Cuba.

Nevertheless, when you go, I hope you enjoy yourself.

So, what? I can't reiterate the point? Dude, go knock yourself out. If you consciously feel that it's ok for you to spearfish in waters that are prohibited to its inhabitants, then go do it. Just remember, that the only reason you can dive and kill fish in those waters is because of your foreign currency that feeds a repressive regime.

Milhouse, Im not sure where you are from but it would piss me off to no end if I was not permitted to hunt in my own waters for food but a tourist could for sport. That is the point. Do you agree withthat policy? If you do, go shoot em up, if not, you are supporting it by going. The choice is yours and there is no right or wrong.

Well said Rolando. I don't and wont go to Cuba despite the 'warm' relations Canada has with Castro.
Milhouse, how about changing your signature? I'm a freediver but find your signature highly offensive.

Alright,

Rolando, I don't want to start a war. I spend 1400$ for a trip (ain't tourism industry one of the good money income in cuba?) and want to do, at least once, my favorite sport. I'm not going there to spearfish all day long, and no, i'm not feeling guilty about it.

I respect your point of view, but I ain't a politic fan and won't argue longer about it.

Yes, absolutely. You are dead right, it's their top money maker now. Only problem is that the money goes directly to the goverment (regime) and the handful of cronies working in the tourism industry. Your hard-earned money will go to a dictator who has repressed his people for decades, murdered citizen for being Christian (Do you forget so easily Neshamah?), non-communists, entrepeneurs/capitalist, etc. Also, exporting his socialist-communist way of thinking throughout the Caribean , Africa, and Latin America (Grenada, Angola, Congo, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Columbia, Guatemala, etc...).

Mundial,
I wonder how an Isreali or Jew would feel if Hitler were in power and I chose to visit the Pfalz region to sip on some Riesling and have my money go directly to the Nazi party? The hippocrisy is sickening!!!

Yeah, political topics on this forum is counter-productive. I don't mean to signal you out Millhouse, but I cannot turn away from innocent ignorance when I have had a near family member put to the "firing squad" for simply thinking differently that the powers that be on that island in the Atlantic.

Millhouse,

As I said before, enjoy your stay, take pictures, bang a Jinetera (young prostitute) and catch a fish or bug or both. But if you care, seek the truth and carve your way through the propaganda. The truth is enlightening, just ask the "born-again".

Hiya

Politics aside, Millhouse, you're asking about a way around the laws of a foreign country you intend visiting.

The country's law prohibits spearfishing, so please abide by it!!! You could end up in a world of trouble!!!

If you are really that keen on spearing, rather look at an alternative destination, that does allow spearfishing.

Regards
miles

Is it just banned for locals or for all ?

I went to Cuba in 2000 - hitched around from the north to the south staying with locals and so on - fine country, fine people. Maybe have a look at some of the books by Sebastio Salgado before you go - "Workers" by him has some good photos of Cubans...

Politics aside - it is a fantastic county. If you go to Veradero type places you will miss Cuba in my opinion. The heart of the country is with the people.

The country's law prohibits spearfishing?

who say so ?

now is diferent - I think you can get a permit to spear

I talk to my friend there and they do spearfishing as always --

YES friend go to varadero ! that is where I im -- find the right person and He will take you to spear......

I hope you have a good trip-
go there and enjoy the beautiful and clear waters,,,

oH do you want to go to varadero? if you want I can talk to my friend he has a house for rent near varadero--- and can give you a good price--

I will do it only if it's permitted, and I won't do it if not.

Sorry Rolando, but all your tries to make me feel guity don't work. I don't know how your can associate prostitution and spearfishing? Tell me you don't think what you wrote about this.

I will be in an all included hotel. I will eat anything, anytime, and as much as I can, same for the drinks. Do I have to avoid this and eat rice once a day? No.
I understand the cubans situation, but I ain't on a politic mission. Everything I'll do there, I'll have to think: "is it fair, do the cubans can make it" ? And if I give gifts to cubans, does it mean I am superior and I treat'em like poors?

I can see that you now live in US. Does it mean you approve all Bush's moves???????

I don't want the answer, but I'm sure it's no. It's just to show you that anywhere you go, you can't make everyone happy.

We could talk hours and hours about it, but it's a SPEARFISHING forum. I repeat: it's not a spearfishing trip. I asked if I CAN make it.

Make you feel guilty? Hardly. Those were far from my intentions. Just trying to make you aware that there is always a flip side to every coin.

You understand the situation? How much family do you have there? How many Cubans do you know? I doubt you know the entire situation, if you did you'd probably choose an alternative destination.

Irrelevant. Have you ever emigrated due to persecution. Start over in a foreign country in which the language, culture, way of life is all new?

It's obvious from your signature ("scuba spearing sucks") and your profile that maturity is not your forte. Have a great time in "paradise".

Everyone tells Cuban people is great. I figure that stupid cubans move to other country...

Rolando, you're sinking more and more at each post at this thread. When we have unsolved problems insine us that make us aggressive each time we talk about that, there is a thing for this: psychologist
