FYI - I have proposed, to a local organic chef and environmental activist, that he harvest Zebras, prepare them with a little tamari etc. Bag em up and market them as Lake Michigan Pistachios.

The person who finds a cost effective way of using these critters for something will be able to afford to get the spearing regs changed!

NHK was over here a couple years ago and hired out the in-law's boat for their video production on zebra mussles- I got hired as a safety diver but the flu knocked me out of commission.:yack

Anyway, halfway through their week of filming they flew over to Detroit to film some ducks who were eating the mussles- and then dying from the toxins concentrated in them.:hungover

One thing I've hear about the effect that the mussles have had on fishing is that they have taken all the base food outof the system so the salmon are really hungry and have been biting on almost anything- obviously, this can't go on forever.

Wikipedia has an interesting entry on the Zebs. I didn't know they were associated with increases in Perch and smallmouth.

To late. I met up with a gentleman with 3 poles on a rack here in Menasha fishing for carp. He was using barbless hooks with some type of chum sack attached above it full of corn meal.

He would weigh them, have his pic taken with them and put them back. His English had more english than mine so I assume he was an Englishman. He spoke of how carp are the only true game fish to catch and was rather proud of his angling. He caught over 100 lbs of carp that afternoon and had quite a crowd gathered while he promoted carp fishing.

Time to start letting out your basement and organising tours to 'Carp heaven'.

Unlike most fish, carp can actually handle 'catch and release'. With Trout this is a bit of a joke - they are really fragile, particularly the skin.
