Spearing/clarity report 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Doug, unless noted as legal in the regulations manual, the answer is "no". The rules state that no game fish can be speared - it makes no mention of size or catch limits.

However, these rules are for public waters. If you are in a private lake, then [for the most-part] all fishing regs are out the window.

By the way, my uncle's name is Doug Clark.

You would think they would allow bass spearing on a lake with no limits, but unfortunately they dont.

spearing bass

I can understand why they do not allow bass spearing. if you notice unlike other fish they are very territorial especially during mating season and do not flee when faced with overwhelming firepower. the population could quickly be wiped out.

Technically the DNR owns all the lakes, even private ones. Unless you have a special fish farm license, you cant even spear gamefish on private lakes.

Right on, Jack. I stand corrected. Private pond restriction has tightened since I was employed by the DNR. But, it's clear as day in this years fishing regs:

"You must have your fishing license with you when fishing and present it to a warden on request. Even waters with no public access (including mostprivate ponds) are considered waters of the state and the appropriate license, tag, orstamp is still required."

Went out with crappiekiller today. Visibility was poor, but some carp still got shot :)
The biggest was 37 inches and 26 pounds.

Went to visit the in-laws up in the U.P. for the past few weeks. My brother-in-law and I got in a good amount of spearing, mostly on Lake Superior. We shot a ton of carp and suckers in a bunch of weed beds. Visibility varied from 15-40' (the 15' day was during a storm) and water temperature was a cool 60 F (we have 7mm suits). Saw some big Northerns and various species of trout while we were out too. Good time overall. Sadly I didn't have a camera, only a phone, so I could only get a few pictures. There is one pic of my biggest carp for one of the days (~17 lbs but 35", seems like they don't get as fat as the inland lakes but do get long), my bro shot one at 22 lbs that day, but after that our scale broke.

We also did our camping trip down in Kohler-Andrea (thanks again for the tip Jon). At first the trip was a bit of a disappointment bc what was forecasted as a NW wind changed into a strong East wind and turned Lake Michigan to muck. We got about 15 minutes of diving in along the Sheboygan break wall before visibility turned to 1'. Shot a decent carp and a small sucker. Since the winds didn't want to cooperate with us we drove 20 min West to Crystal Lake. Very nice lake. Despite heavy boat traffic in the middle of the lake, visibility was still 20'+. Our main focus was panfish but we shot a couple carp too. Sadly, the biggest 2 that we saw (easily 30+ lbs) spooked very easily and didn't give us a good shot. We also saw a bunch of largemouth bass that were enormous (I'm guessing this is why the majority of people fishing were in bass boats). I got a pic of our haul from a days worth of spearing (minus the carp).

just a vis report for a NON-Spearable Lake. Devils Lake today had 15-20 ft vis on the east bluff side. It was pretty clear for this time of year I thought. Saw lots of trout. I hiked the east bluff then decided to jump in to check the vis, because it looked GOOD! So, if you're looking for some DIVING.........

I was diving up there last week with my family and had 81F degree water down to 21'. vis was pretty good and I saw a few different schools of 50-60 large mouth bass swimming through the weeds.

Hello all. Tow questions. Anyone have a clarity report for Black Hawk rec area lake, thinking of taking the drive tomorrow Sun and does any one know the name of the guy who went to dive palooza and hunts that lake a lot. He was the one who was camped on the seperate sight and cooked up the crappie for the group?

Slimsteve- That "GUY' was KRAFTYJACK. Not been in the water lately. Hopefully soon.

Thanks,
He says 2 feet vis calling it a swamp. I've only gotten out twice to my little pond. still has about 8 to 10 feet vis.

It's been said, but I'll say it again - The weather conditions have been brutal to the lakes this summer. If you can find a puddle that hasn't collapsed yet, please invite a buddy to help you enjoy it. To add to local tragedy, even the "year round" clear lakes I've been lucky enough to jump in have yielded poor fishing this summer. I'm ready to hang my hat up, settle in, and start putting on my "winter coat". Why stay in shape if I can't "use it"? I think I'll go get a bucket of KFC.

This has been the worst summer of diving I've had in all my 30 years of diving.:rcard

I've been in Madison for over ten years now and every year the water quality seems to go down a little more. Driving to Milwaukee is just too much of a hassle when you can't count on decent weather- or sewer overflow to screw things up.:yack If things don't pick up this winter I might be ready to hang up my fins forever and just go ride my bike.:head

On the bright side, 50,000 of my closest friends and I just road our bikes around the city with Lance Armstrong today. :) The kids had a blast and we saw all of our neighbors downtown on their bikes as well.
