Spearing north wales

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Reel vs float line has been flogged to death. I like having a real as I dive from my kayak alot in pretty inaccessible places. Not only is the weight of a kayak impossible to handle if attached to the gun but I would always want to be attached to my means of safety when the currents are horrific and the only access point is a mile away.

At the end of the day there is no definitive answer, just try both and see what you prefer. Lose the cheap orange string that comes as standard with floats and go the b+q to purchase 20yrds of 6mm polypropylene rope - a far superior item.

Bro, as you know I use a reel on all my uk guns and I love it!! If you dive in swell with the gun attached to your float/yak line then you can get pulled up and down affecting accuracy and also it makes the gun more difficult to track.
I often use a drop weight and dive around my float (<20m away) which you cant do without a reel (well you can but if you hit a big fish you have to drop the gun).
Also if you are going through string weed or deep kelp, it gets caught up and makes clearing the line hard work. Park the float/yak and dive around it when conditions allow and the fish are skittish.
I have even started to dive with a reel in the tropics, ok not for doggies but great for the reef when you have good boat cover. It makes diving so easy and free.

That's my thoughts on it!!

Personally, I've never really had a problem with swell affecting the gun underwater, even in very windy / swelly conditions; the only issue is when I reach the end of my 12m float line! Although that doesn't often happen!

I've towed my big 2 seater yak around in the current without a problem too. It wouldn't be great in very heavy current though.

I'd kind of like to dive without a float as I'm in a constant battle with my float-line vs my fins / snorkle rofl but I find the benefits outweigh the negatives

If I was diving without a float though, a reel would be a must!

At the moment i dont use a reel or a float! My gun came with a reel but found it awkward to use and especially reload. So scrapped it, now I just have a single wrap poor vis / double wrap good vis

Floats have up till now been pointless, but now as I'm starting to explore further out where there is boat traffic, I feel its time to get one. Its more just to fly the A flag than anything els.

I like the freedom and the simplicity of my kit, Gun inhand - Stringer, keep/goodie bag and knife on my belt.

So..... This weekend? About time we were revving each other up for it!

You guys have had it bad this year or so it seems! :head

Usually pretty quick if you call and ask them to!
ok, come on, give me a good spot.... thinking about north anglesea or heading down the llyn......

Mike, if you like my setup, you will have to order the open muzzle as extra xoxoxox

Isn't open muzzle standard? Ah - the pictures on their site are terrible!

I was thinking about getting a closed muzzle 70 to double as low viz gun and an easy loading night dive gun - what do you think?

Teeny bit confuzzled by the band / spear options... I was thinking that a 6.6mm spear with 20mm bands might be a good choice for a short gun with a bit of oomph.

Or should I just stick to the standard 6.3mm spear with 16mm bands. Decisions, decisions ;)

Thought you would like to know that I went in today on North Anglesea.... Great spot....Calm...... Viz like veg soup..... Cream of veg soup....... With pasta bits in.

Went toWest coast, just to see....... Saw. went home.

Dyl might be going for it tonight, but looking at the wind etc, think he will have to have a fair bit of luck... Fortunately he tends to!

just thought you should know that you saved yourselves some petrol and time... But hopefully see you out there before the weather really closes in! Have a good weekend and good luck dyl!

Pat

When I bought mine, it came as standard with 6.6 spear (which I grew to love despite the fact that it rusted really quickly after a few dives) with a closed muzzle. Why not go for an 80? I think that would be the perfect compromise for what you want and the conditions you dive in?

Hope you get it before next week you head out again mate

I've just had a nice email from Clive @ Crystal Viz, for the 70, he recommended a 6.6mm spear with 16mm bands - he said he found that the 6.3mm spear was shooting high and that the 6.6mm was perfect.

I was thinking about getting a 70cm Aluminium and a 90cm Carbon - that would have me covered for all situations... right?
