"starfins" hyper

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I am also considering selling one of mine - for the same reason.
It is similar to the one above - so has a relatively shallow blade angle compared with the new ones (probably about 20 degrees). Pockets are for size 44 (10.5us) but are roomy for socks up to 5 mil (best with 3 mil for me)..
VERY nice fin made for distance and comfort. The blade is medium soft and the fin has the organic feel that Starfins are famed for. I'll make my decision based on interest and reasonable offers. Pictures to follow.

Hi, PM me a price for this mono. My friend is looking for 2nd hand Starfins. He is very talented but he's just a poor student(he swam 170m with plastic short scuba bi-fins:) . It would be nice upgrade for him. Is it stiffness number 3? He tried mine, which is s. 3 and liked it very much.

Just got some Starfins....one black carbon for a student and the clear blade for me. Finally, I have a monofin that fits me perfectly....i gave Alex my measurements and it has worked out. I can use the fin comfortably for about 15minutes, which is exactly what I wanted. The fin/blade feels really good in the water so far and I'm impressed with its feel.

I'm amazed how good Starfins is at getting the size (and everything else) right.
I just realized my 28 degree star fin is 2 1/2 years old - and I have used it nearly every day.

How heavy is the fin above water?

Can Alex reduce this weight?

I like the light mass of a classic fin. The less weight to move around the less energy we need to swim I think.

My Starfins was made to be slightly positive at the surface and is neutrally buoyant at -5m.

Weight and mass are of course different.

The weight matters when carrying it to the pool or from the blue hole. :D

This Starfins feels about 1/2 kg lighter than the Glide and yet it is seems to descend into the water with greater speed and power with less effort. I like how the starfin's footpockets are pretty much fully extended outside of the blade area, so it appears to offer greater power from the leverage.

With the Glide, the balls of my feet are positioned directly over and on top of the lower part of the blade. With the starfins, the balls of my feet are well beneath and outside of the blade with only my big toe overseeing the blade. I like this apparent extra blade amount being available. In other words with the Glide, the footpockets are about 15% into the lower blade area. With the Starfins it's only about 5%

I guess I like the feeling of my feet not stepping on the blade. Perhaps the principle and power of extension is how the new X-20 evolved from its predecessor and extended outward from the hydrofoil. I digress. :friday

Apnea addict, weight also matters underwater, just try to move a boat in the water, the weight is neutral, but the volume AND the inertia of the object make it much more difficult.

Thanks Spearo for the head's up in one crucial design difference!

This discussion just gave me some cool design inspiration, thanks.

Hey Kars,

The Starfin is the lightest fin I've owned. Lighter that Triton or Tropol. It may be lighter even than the Waterway Nemo - certainly it is more positive in the water.

I have just bought new carbon Starfin. It's the new generation carbon. Again, excellent work with footpockets. I gave Alex precise tips what I want and that's what I got. It's my second fin from Starfins. First took me a long way up to 250m DYN and I hope new toy will bring me even further :)
As for weight, mine has 3,2kg, similar to previous fiberglass one which was about 3,3kg.. Triton for instance is 4,4kg (it was my first monofin but I also liked it).

One tip I can give to potential buyer is, whatever stiffness You want, go with 1-2 (in scale) lower than You would order especially if it's Your first starfin. For instance I got the lowest one (no.2 in 2-7 scale) and I wouldn't be able to bare any stiffer one. Generally I've found Starfin stiffer than other brands so You have to keep it in mind while ordering. Alex will make what You want, the thing is, You must know what You want :) Rembember, stiffness comes from footpockets too, so when You make an order, You can give precise specification about them (whether You want soft or hard rubber on it). I think the extra stiffness in Starfin comes from really good quality of footpockets (they don't bend, so there is no power loss) and the positioning of them (ment in previous posts).

cheers,
Matt

OR if you don't know what you want and are a recreational diver; You can just tell him what kind of diving you want to do and let him sort you out. :) In my, my daughter's and my dive buddy's cases we all let him pick the stiffness. We just said stuff like
'I want to be able to wear it for hours in mostly less than 30 meters' with or without socks etc. etc.

Good observation about the positioning of the foot pockets - I'd not noticed but it has to have a major impact.

My next fin will be more of a depth fin - I'm pretty excited!
