"starfins" hyper

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Yes, but I meant for spearfishing, sorry :blackeye ! Here we have to do everything slowly to a low pulse, and when I find the fish I stood motionless and cold from this! None of my friends (even the most famous hunters) do not use thinner than 9mm from November to April here ;-)
And you are always in motion and therefore you warm! When I swam and won European and World Championships marathon, we used only short pants to the waist thickness of 2mm, and the water was 12-14 degrees.

HI Alex

We use 5 mil here - sometimes with a 1.5 mil vest under - down to 1C. I use this for photography - which takes even longer times of not moving than spearfishing (fish here are more afraid of the camera!). Of course we get cold very quickly - but fix it with monofin sprints Truthfully most of the long dives are not much below 6-8 c - after that the fish all go away.

My next fin will be medium hard - and will be sized to fit without socks - since I have discovered putting the socks OVER the fin footpockets works quite well.

Here is a small review for my starfins hyper. It is a custom made hyper for me and here are my thoughts of it.

I have tried a number of monofins and owned a 30-degree angle waterway glide.

So first, the fit.

I sent pictures of my feet and some measured data and yes, this monofin fits very well. Even though it is new I wore it one hour in pool. After that, my feet weren’t too sore and I was able to walk without too many problems. So I would give full points for fit.

Next, the blade.

As I said earlier, Alexandr must be some sort of wizard because there is definitely some magic in this department. The blade is stiffish, I would say medium or medium plus. At least it is way stiffer than leader hyper medium and WW #2. But the stiffness is not the thing by which I would evaluate this thing. I am a pretty well built guy, I weigh over 90kg and I have enough power to use a bit stiffer monofins too but the real catch is how the blade works.

The blade has a slow rebound unlike any other monofin I have tried before. The WW glide had a snappy response and I always felt that it would propel me no matter what technique I use. Starfins is a totally different beast all together. This fin makes you use proper form while diving because fast kicking just doesn't work. The style is nice round movements, sort of whale like style. This way I even have good grip on the water for the up kick too. I just love the blade on this one, it makes swimming easy and efficient.

It also really moves me forward. With Glide I used kick and glide with kick-kick-glide style. It took me three sets to get 25m and the time was 25-30 seconds. With this the natural way seems to be kick-kick-kick-glide. Now I only need two sets of these and 20-25 seconds per 25m. When I get my technique down, I bet that I can drop the third kick from my set and glide more.

Now to the gliding in water-part.

This is in fact my second Starfins hyper. The blade was the same on both and the only difference being blade angle. The first one had about 18-20 degrees angle and while it was very easy and logical to swim with, it just didn't glide. My ankles are not that flexible. The second one has about 25 degrees of angle and this seems to be a happy medium for me. The 30-degree WW was and still is very good but a very big angle makes the monofin seem numb and hard to manoeuvre. This 25 degree one is a tiny bit more difficult to swim with but I glide in the water with it and this seems to be working with me. On CWT the whole angle thing is not that important but in DYN it plays a big role. What I try to say here is that my ankles and me feel comfortable in this one.

Quality is also there so no problems in that department.

I like this monofin a lot. It feels precise and really propels me well. Also my friends who have tried it liked it very much. It is a very very very nice monofin for free diving. Alexandra takes the guesswork out of the ordering process. He is really good in making comfortable monofins and the blades a just awesome. And a really huge positive factor is that if something goes wrong, he will do everything he can to help you.

Can someone or Alex tell me what is the exact weight of the monofin?? I meen hyper one, with negative buoyancy for deep diving. Foot pocket around 45.

thanks

Czesc Matt,

My fin is exactly 3.5 kg but my foot pocket is closer to 47-48 so Yours should be slightly lighter

I know Glide was to heavy for You and You need fin for Your coming 140m CWT dive

If this is still too heavy for You for extra $$$ You can get carbon version

I decided not to get carbon since it was proven by D.Mullins there isn't much gain (performance vise).

How heavy is Your Glide anyway?

Hey Matt,
Starfins hyper weight ~3,2-3,5 Different between fiber and carbon ~100-200gr. just carbon pushes more , is quick return after the stroke! Effect is more visible in finswimming at the sprint ! To have enough fiber my opinion! 3,5kg this weight on land and in water all the way around! We can make any buoyancy: negative, zero, positive! :martial

I don't have a glide fin. I've got one from Triton. It's really great fin for swimming pool, it doesn't have v-bend I really like it, but for depth it's a different story. I really struggle, angle is really small so my freefall was not perfect as I have seen on video's and it is very heavy. It's 4,4-4,5kg.
For the carbon wing I don't know any deep diver using it, so there must be a pretty good reason of it.

I'm just looking around for information, at the same time saving money, because now I know that for my next depth event I need a new monofin

I am so happy that i ordered a hyper!!!!

Just a song from the crazy 80's

Interesting! I think I'll add it to my Collection of Weird Fins. Are they made for UW rugby? For freediving they seem to be too short and too large, but I would love to test a pair like that anyway.

EDIT: Can you tell me who is the French? Perhaps I know him and could ask him (you can PM me if you do not want to publish the name).

No, it is for livesaving ! They have fantastique move power !
I think you can`t to know him - it`s is one of the best French finswimmers sprinter - Erven Morice ! I think he wants to try his hand at LifeSaving. If some body ask us for make some interesting for UW rugby - we make it :t

Took my Stafins out into 5c waters and down to about 28 meters. (we got cold before we found the deep spot ) I am surprised how well this fin performs with my winter suit and weights - it feels soft but has good power off the bottom and I was able to wear 6 mil socks with it quite comfortably

Good to read Fonduset that these fins perform well in cold water.

My fin is in the customs :martialmartialsince monday. I hope that i will get it before Xmas.

I feel more and more like buying the hyper starfins. I am wondering - thinking aloud - how does one make the payment? My bank asks for 11.9 % of the total amount transferred to a third country, Ukraine is apparently a third country, second countries being the eu and few others. Is it possible to pay by paypal? Like 45 € vs 15 € is a big difference.
cheers

Check with Alex - I think his email is up there somewhere - but I don't think he does paypal - of course now that he's all popular maybe he'll change
