"starfins" hyper

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I had mine out a couple of days ago in 36F degree water. The fin worked great, but my feet did get cold after 45 minutes. I wear a 3mm sock underneath and 5mm over socks to cover the heels.

I think our lakes will all be frozen over in the next week. Right now half of them are.

I think those oversocks are a stroke of genius. (worth noting - Jon has a Triton - not a starfins - still hyperfin though)

To send money to Alex shouldn't be a problem from EU because he has a Euro bank account, i think.

Your rigth, not always an easy way. heheh. Sometimes a little bit complicated. We know what we are talking about.

I think those oversocks are a stroke of genious too. Is there any reason to fit socks inside the footpockets anymore?
How cold can you go with just oversocks?

I've gone into the lower 40sF with badly ripped up 3 mil oversocks on my Tropol fin. The Tropol has no holes however. My starfin is sized for socks so I wear 5 mil socks inside it - which obviously works quite well.

The drawback with overssocks is putting the fin on. At the temperatures we have here in the winter exposed skin gets cold very quickly. I'm not sure if my feet would recover during the course of the dive - I'll give it a shot some time though.

There's no way I could go with just oversocks in the temps I dive in. I would get frost bite just on my way from the car to the water. My fin (triton) was made to wear with 5mm socks, but my feet cramp up after just 15 minutes with socks that thick. In the summer, when I'm barefoot, I can wear the thing for hours on end in comfort.

The best compromise I've come up with in winter is wearing a 3mm inner sock and a 5mm oversock. They are not easy to slide on over the footpockets- especially when wearing 3-finger mitts. I guess I could cut them back a bit further to ease dressing, but then I would worry about getting too cold.

When it gets really cold I find that I'm much better off wearing my C4 Mustangs. I can easily put a 5-6mm sock in those pockets and not worry about the cold. I take the laces out in the winter for use of a thicker sock and lace them back up in the summer when I go with only a 3mm sock.

There are times that even wearing the Mustangs makes my feet cold and then I prefer to dive shallow using a no-fins technique. It keeps the blood flowing to the hole body and there are no pressure points from my gear to cool things off.

Hey Jon,
I went no fins here last Saturday - wind was 30 mph straight out of the north - 9 foot swells and 6 foot breakers - some of the biggest waves I've ever seen on the bay. Water was 37 f and visibility was under three feet - most miserable conditions ever! I sure did stay warm though

Interesting to compare conditions. Tuesday it was 30 knots out of the northeast, lots of sideshore drift, breakers 5-6+, very big for Sarasota and reasonably clean. I went to the beach to see if body surfing was possible but decided I could not stomach walking a half mile back up the beach in the wind and a 3/2 surfer suit. Too cold to even go home and get my Elios. Air Temp 48 F, water temp 52 F.

Some people on this site are not crazy.

When I used to live in Milwaukee I used to go out boogy boarding this time of year when the waves kicked up. I can remember the Coast Guard coming out to check on me and a couple of other guys on long boards one November day. We were fine, but I guess they don't see that too often. As time went on I ditched the boogy board for a dive kayak as it allowed me to catch more waves in a given time period.

Over here when the waves get big the vis goes down to zero (negative retina) due to the clay bottom. It can take days for it to clear out after a big storm.

Inland lakes are all freezing over fast and I have a ton of stuff to do to get ready for Christmas- so no diving for now. I just put the studded tires on my bike and have been getting out for a few rides in the snow. I think the kids will want to get out skiing once they break for winter vacation. Diving should start up again come January.

a week ago, hunted and been in the water 5 hours! Still moved by boat from the point to the point - very cold! Now I have sinusitis! 8mm suit, socks 7! Today bought a 10mm;-) I think it will be warm
cold nothingness - the main desire

It will be just a moment before Eric Fattah jumps in and share his warm freediving memories, like diving no suit in between those lovely cute ice blocks.

Have you guys such a small house, or boring company that you need to chill out in these ice age conditions? I would much rather go to a pool or see some indigo blue freediving video near a cosy fireplace...

Hey alex.i wish to you and all the people in this forum happy new year with health and happiness!!!!.
I just receive the fin that you made for me
i just made 3 trainings with it and i cant send a full feedback
just the first impressions
first it looks wonderfull(i ll post a photo later) and the quality looks suberb
the footpockets are very comfort and right size
in the pool the fin is very different from everithing i have try
first with any dolfinism it goes 50% longer and it s reverse is quickly.its almost comes up itself.
I talk with my father and my coach and they said that this is exactly they asked from you.
I have a problem to synchronize my dolfinism but this is normal because as the coach said i ll need at least two month to be one with fin.
Even though i can swim on my times and i feel i havent take more than 30% that this fin can do.
My feeling is this is a special fin and a want to thank to you for this(and my father)
i ll post again with full feedback after the winter championship on end of marchand i thing i can swim under 42s
my record is big 43.
Happy new year to all of you
