Hello all,

I'm moving to the warm mediteranean in October, so I decided to buy myself a load of spearfishing kit.

While searching for general info for beginners, I stumbled across this forum and found, to my surprise and delight, that people not only spearfish in England, but on my doorstep in Brighton!

Anyway, im a fairly experienced freediver (allbeit in much warmer, clearer water) and i'd love to have a go in Brighton (or nearby) before I leave.

If anyone has any beginners tips, or better still, would be willing to show me the ropes, i'd be eternally grateful (and of course, il get the post dive beers in)

Cheers

Tom

Hi Lee,

Yup, I'd love too but the plan for this weekend is to hit a few spots in Dorset on Saturday followed by a dip on the Sussex coast on Sunday morning.

I might be on for the weekend after if I can secure the necessary agreements!

Hey Lee,

Thanks for the invite... I do love to miss big fish it's true!

We'll have to find some 8lbers up here and get you and Jim up. And of course we should explore Portland too.

Keep up it up - always enjoy hearing about your successes!

Cheers,

Ross

hey guys, any of you very familiar with Bognor? I went down there today for the first time and think I just sort of didn't find the right spot. I had heard that there are these rock reefs that are supposed to be out there but I didn't really find much. Visability was terrible, so there was no finding anything while under, but even back on land at low tide, I didnt see any obvious breakers or big rocks sticking out of water. I had come down from the middle of town then walked to the far west end of the Esplanade and out slightly past the beach huts and that old rotting hull on beach. Is that supposed to be a good spot? Or any suggestions? I went probably as far as 200-250 meters from shore. PS - I saw two other spearos wading out around the same spot at around 1:30AM. Was that anyone on this forum? Catch anything? Thanks!

Hi gents, was wondering if anyone had any views on Hastings or nearby areas for spearfishing as visit family in Kent and wondered if there was a reasonable option nearer than Brighton? I stay not far from Hawkhurst Kent.
I think I know the answer but thought I'd check with the locals;)
Cheers.

Are there any clubs in the Brighton area? I've just moved here and I'm really interested in spearfishing (scuba diver/freediver/octopush player t the moment).

I'd quite like to have a go at it before I wander of and buy a speargun...

Olle

Let me know if you find one squashed.

I decided to go for a bit of freediving at Brighton pier this week,
the guy at the marina dive shop wouldnt rent me any weights because I didnt have my dive certs with me.

Only one thing for it, leave the wetsuit in the bag!
Far too cold really, couldnt get comfortable.
According to the guy at the dive shop, sometimes get 8 mtr vis at the end of the pier, plus some things to look at!
I couldnt see my hand in front of my face, but I wasnt far enough out.

Anyone have any tips for Brighton pier?
Morning/afternoon, east/west, presumably high tide?
Il give it another go next week

Cheers

Hi Squashed, no, not as far as I know.

Taggkent - welcome to Sussex vis! 8m vis? Not that I've noticed in the last three years... Some things to look at? Definitely (well, some of the time). I find best time for vis to be from 2hrs before high water, neap tides, obviously when the waves aren't too big. Good luck!

I was going to head down tomorrow (Sunday) and just go for a bit of freediving. I can't find any clubs but figure if I go, see lots of fish it'd go some way to deciding if I should start buying more gear...

Let me know if you do decide give it another go - I live locally and can lend you some lead.

8m vis off the Bognor today.

Came out with a few decent mullet and a schoolie bass.

Loads of shoals of big mullet and glorious conditions.

Shame I spent ages on the top of the tide in the wrong place (easy to do there!) and then had to come back in on the spare outboard.

Saw some other spearos down there with a proper monster bass which I was jealous of.

Surely the conditions in Brighton are doing well?!?

Anyone been in?

I'm so jealous... won't be back in Brighton for another 10 days...
I was in Guernsey for a couple of days last week - had a great dive there last year. This time Brightonesque vis and only micro mullet seen... I haven't speared a fish since mid July!!!

Hi

If I come down next weekend where is the best place to go, somewhere between newhaven and littlehampton?

Thanks

Rob

Do you think the easterly today will stir up the vis around Bognor?

Hi Rob, did you get in?
Re spots - to be honest I get on best at my most regular spot (Brighton) - don't think that it has more fish than anywhere else, just that I know it better.
Cheers Nick
