Hi does any one have any good places to fish ,i go to Seaford and Newhaven at the moment both good for many different fish but would like to try other areas .Has anyone tryed Peacehaven\Rottingdean they look quite good from the road but havent ventured there yet?

hey huntfish, i live in brighton and usually spear under the brighton pier and the west pier, they are both very good. i have tried down at rottingdean but its not very good and all the bass are really small, best bet is the palace pier in brighton.

Hi Josh Iv been down to the west pier once before at low tide the visibility was excellent but didnt have a wet suit on and by the time i got to the end i was frozen im just saving for a 5mm elios, Only saw a large silver eel. iv only been spearfishing for this year iv got all the gear just need the suit .Have u been down the marina wall? Stuart

Mate be very careful about spearing without wetsuit! Hypothermia creeps up very slowly! Please be careful and invest in wetsuit as soon as you can!

Thanks mate i usually do but its only a 3mm surf suit, that day i was at the speed trials down madeira drive and couldnt resist a dive but only had my harpoon and rash vest on me . The 3mm suit is ok for a couple of hours but after that it does get a bit cold.

Thanks, hopefully get one soon i bought my speargun from the same place good service.

hey huntfish, i have caught lots of mullet and bass from the westpier, i went along the marina wall today and it was very poor only saw wrasse and small pollack, vis was amazing though. i have never been in without a wetsuit i have a 5mm suit and its nice and warm.

morning jwells1989 i went up Newhaven key last weekend but was at the wrong end of the tide could only just see the end of my gun. Im gonna head back today at high. I havent been to the end yet and have heard there is some big bass to be found .When is best at the piers high or low tide?
Im just saving for a 5mm Elios at the moment i use a solo surf suit with a seperate hood which does keep u warm but only for a couple of hours. Do u have the smooth cell or neoprene im not sure if i want warmth or durability iv heard the smooth cell are a bit delicate.

hey huntfish,
yeah mine is also a surf suit but its 5mm and i find it very warm, i can usually stay in for quite a few hours, before i start to feel the cold. i am also going in today but am gonna do the west pier,
i have never dived newhaven, but i want to try it.
let me know if you ever want anybody to go with.
(my suit is neoprene but my freind has an elios smooth cell and he said that it was really warm) i heard that the smooth cell are better.

I think we saw you, we were kitting up with Scuba kit.

Got to the end, got nothing and vis was not good.

Big tide 10-12 metres.

Saw only small Pollack and one small shoal of Bass.

I live in Ovingdean.

There aren't really any places to go at Rottingdean.

I often see people fishing along the coast in small fising boats with the usual sand eel lures. Sometimes they do get the odd Bass, but I guess all comes down to being in the right place at the right time.

Best place is the east side of the marina, but during the day you'll have to contend with lots of fishermen.

Hi captain j, yes that was me i was the one in the surf suit , do u spearfish much down Newhaven that was my second time. Im new to the sport so still learning ,does the tide height effect the clarity of the water or the fishes movements?
Iv done some fishing off the west marina wall in brighton but not sure how u get to the east side do u have to park in the multistory and walk across the marina?

yeah you can walk through the marina to get to the east its not to far from the multistory.
did you or captain j get anything today i only got one pollack, saw lots of other but they where all to small, alkso saw lots of wrasse and eels. no bass or mullet though.

No nothing i did see a few small fish mainly wrasse ,the visibility was not that good how was it down the pier, will u be heading out today?

hey everyone. I am pretty new to spearfishing and only been doing it since the beginning of this summer. Went down to Newhaven yesterday after a 2 hour drive from London, saw loads of fisherman and even though the vis was a bit merky, I went in and spent about 2.5 hours in the water (very determined , as all I saw was some bass of 120cm. I did have lots of fun though practising my freediving and 'in water' relaxation techniques learnt at the NOTANX freediving club in London. Just as I was about to give up finding fish, i saw another spearo entering the water and thought -hey hey at least i will have the opportunity to meet a fellow spearo- as i dont know many, especially living in London!! Nice meeting you HUNTFISH. Anyway as i was about to leave I saw the first fish which looked like a legal size. So in the bad vis i took a shot, pulled up my spear and hey what do you know!!? I just shot my first ever fish !!! The feeling of joy was incredible. Huntfish shared in my joy and also informed me that it was a Wrasse (good size though). I've heard about it not being a good eating fish, but since I killed it , I had to eat it. So back home and in the oven with lemon juice, white wine ,salt, pepper and chopped garlic. I have to say it was not as bad as I thought it may be. Not the greatest of sea fish but certainly not disgusting - a little mushy, but hey if you killed it then you must eat it too.

Hey PISCES glad to hear the fish was ok. Iv been doing some searching on Bognor and selsey bill, apparently its quite good and some inshore reefs best at low tide due to high currents but sounds quite good .Not sure how much of the year left to fish i was thinking of heading to Brighton today but felt a bit breezy so gave it a miss. I was thinking about doing a few competitions next year some require 3 man teams so if your interested and anyone else out there interested we will have to sort something out (ILL DEFINITLY NEED A NEW WETSUIT 6 HOURS IN THE WATER) .
Does anyone fish winter and how is the water. Is it best to give it a miss or are there any decent fish to be had?

hey Huntfish. Those comps sounds like good fun, and a good way of meeting other spearos and getting some tips etc. If you are looking at getting a team together, then i'm in for sure. Just need the venue, times and dates then we can start organising. Sounds like fun. I hope someone replies to your winter questions as i am quite curious myself. Good luck.

Some folk dive all year round, we do more night diving in the winter but the weather is more of a handicap than the temp. There are only a few who bother in Feb or March, there just ain't no fish around!
Wrasse are perfectly edible just not a very sporting target but virtually all of us started with one as our first catch.
