If you swim straight off the Church of the Good Shepherd a roof will appear behind it with two chimneys, one each end, postion these either side of the spire this will take you right on to Church Rocks 400yds off the low water mark. Use Lancing College on what ever lines up with it for a side mark. Dave Barnard Rocks, Supermarket and the ledge are all down to the west within 400yds. Enjoy your fishing. Slub weed will clear soon we had 15ft on the bottom on the Palace peir, Sunday morning early, loads of bass around all small up to 1 kilo.

Thanks for that , will try again . It says in the Dive Sussex diver guide that Dave Barnard Rocks are named after a local spearo , how cool is that  having a spearing site named after you ? How about jwells's Palace Pier :) or the eric aqua breakwater :) , OK I gotta stop drinking sweet German wine it's turning my brain to mush .

Dave Barnard RIP, sadly passed away in 2006. A fantastic character, convinced my girlfriend to do the dance of the 7 veils at one of the BSA dinner dance piss ups (I had to drag her away...:)) I'm glad his memory is served well reagrding fishing marks!

i dived the palace pier yesterday and got a masive plaice, i was just sitting on the bottom waiting for bass and then i looked to my left to see this hugh plaice just swim by me!!!!!

The Sussex Spearfishing Club put most of the inshore marks for the Sussex coast including the mulberry units around Pagham that you can see in the Dive Sussex book forward. We had a very interesting meeting with Kendall McDonald lasting six hours with much Mickey taking on both sides. The small set of boulders just to the left of Church Rocks never had a name so quick as a flash Steve Westall came up with the name Dave Barnard Rocks that went straight in Kendall’s note book. A fitting tribute to one of our best members over the last few years. Dave and I had a funny experience a few years back when we found a group of lung divers meandering around off Selsey with a compass in one hand and a copy of Kendall’s book in the other. They told us they where trying to find the Mulberry Unit as they were looking for a little souvenir for their new clubhouse. We took them to one, left them to it, only to meet up with them later on the Bognor Ramp. Tongue in check we asked them if the had found a little something for the clubhouse, No was the reply! Dave then asked them if they could give us a hand with a little object we had, tied under our 3.5 mts inflatable. The look on their faces was priceless as we pulled out a 8ft three bladed prop from a Heinkle Bomber complete with cannon holes from its fight with a Spitfire. They could not believe that two snorkel divers had raised a 3 cwt prop without aqualungs. If you want to see the prop it’s in Tangmere Air Museum but the engine still stands proud of the bottom along side a wing section home to a couple of big lobsters.

It's good people have fond memories of Dave Barnard , I'm glad to have found out a little bit about him , and umm how do you get someone elses girlfriend to do the dance of the seven veils ? just curious . :)

Went for a dip this morning , umm somewhere on the Sussex coast ( see I'm learning ) :) . Took my new Omer xxv gold 90 out for it's first trial , vis was poor but managed to line up on a reasonable fish , pulled the trigger and missed by a country mile :( . Thinking I may have made a mistake buying this gun ( don't often miss by THAT much ) , a little later saw a vague grey shape in the murk , aimed where the head might be and shot a 2kg Bass just behind the gill plate :) . So may be gun is good after all , although it's a bit trickier to load the spear than my old Commanchie , expect will get used to it .

Im just about to order a Beuchat marlin carbon 90 i have the same worries, will it be as accurate as my trusty venom 75. im used to closed muzzle and have found it extreamly accurate iv heard good and bad about open muzzle guns but i suppose ill just have to see for my self.

I have been useing a Beuchat marlin carbon 82 for the last two months and have not missed a fish so far with it, little bit tricky getting used to loading the open end but deadly accurate.

Hey stinkyfish,

Am fairly new to this forum too - and already found it very useful. I live in rottingdean and try and get in around here or further afield.

Welcome! & Happy Hunting.

Here's to calm clear seas (or really rough storms for surfing)

Ryan
