Sussex Spearing 2011

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
bobandsausage - Sounds like a plan. Keen to check out the Brighton sites, especially for those days when I only have a couple of hours.

barnacleboy - No have all day Sundays free just have to be back for 11am Mon, Tues and Sat.

Anyway boys keep in touch and hopefully sort something out soon (if these screaming south westerlies ever die off!).

Cool! I'm down at Dorset this weekend coming but then up for some Sussex goodness...if, as you say, the weather improves!

Think I'll need to invest in a proper spearing wetsuit to maximise the season...I'm figuring my one piece with separate hood is going to leave me cold at some stage...

Looking forward to meeting you guys...I'll be in touch soon!

Hi,

Just found these forums recently and it was about time I made my first post. I'm also in the Haywards Heath area and am looking to check out the local spots.

As a background I've been scuba diving abroad mostly since I was 16. And have freedived/spearfishrd once in Greece but until recently havnt had the urge to start in the UK. As for gear I have an old 60cm speargun and my scuba fins, mask, snorkel and 7mm wetsuit.

I was down in Newhaven today (east arm) and the water was err..well..brown. Although I'm keen to check out the west arm when there is a little more vis.

Wyvern

Forecast this morning talked about high pressure moving over the UK from Wednesday...finally! But of course, I've got to go away for work for ten days from Thursday...
Happy hunting gents, I hope you can make it out when the winds die down!

The wind is still screaming SW and the sea's brown and foamy to the horizon...sigh. But I noticed there's no fish photos on this thread - anyone got any to share to keep us stoked? My fish seem to make it from stringer to pan without getting in front of the camera, but I might have a couple to get things rolling

At Newhaven now. The water is still very cloudy, I could just about see the end of my gun. As you go deeper itlooks more and more like pea soup.

Is that right by the arm or further out? I was just about to spur of the moment go down there? Is it dreadful?

Wyvernp - I'm heading down there now. My son's going to do some sea fishing so might see you there (if you're still there!). Or we might catch you if you're partial to mackerel feathers :)

Ahh shame. I'm back home now. I was out by the east arm although I did drive round the the west side after and had a peek, the water looked about the same. I'd guess we need a few calm days for it to properly clear. Might be better on Saturday if this weather stays with us. I'll probably go down there at about 10ish.

Spoke to a few guys fishing down there earlier. Not much mackerel around. Hope you had more luck that I did!

Ha. I was just about to jump on and ask the same thing. Can make this afternoon if you're keen? When and where?

I'm just up in Kent at the moment, but will try to be at Newhaven by about 4.30/5 - I'll PM you my number so drop me a text when you're there (or send me your number and I'll text you). I'll bring a torch too in case it's too good to get out in a hurry.
Low tide is at about 18.30 - we've got big tides at the moment, and I don't know how Newhaven fishes on a big low. I normally find that big tides = worse viz as the strong stream carries a lot of sediment, but we'll see
Hopefully catch you in a bit!

Wish I could. I'm up in Birmingham and Manchester until friday :( Let us know what the vis is like as I'll be down there at the weekend.

Guys, just a heads up - if the tide's going out (because it's big) it can make swimming to shore a bit tougher (as I experienced), so don't wait until you're exhausted to come back in! :)

ok, overdue for fishing reports... Weds went to Newhaven with silverbullet. Viz was crap (blame it on the spring tides), though improved quite a bit around slack water. Unfortunately by then the sun had gone down... I think you need a proper powerful torch for shining in the caves - mine's a bit rubbish, and I just managed to scare a few wrasse. otherwise a cracking spot - tonnes of small pout and pollack, some nice bass put in a fleeting appearance (I missed), silverbullet lost round 1 with a lobster and I got a meal-for-one sized pollack.
Yesterday I went in at Brighton - lots of small schoolie bass, but nothing shootable. Viz still marginal.
Went in again at Brighton today. Viz once again abysmal (just past the end of the spear), but I got a nice garfish (>60cm) and a bass.
Sadly no fishing for me this weekend (quality time with family), so good luck the rest of you! Let us know how you get on and post some photos.
