Wyvernp - how did you get on in Dorset?

Hey,

Not so ghreat from a fish point of view but I think by the looks of the posts in the Dorset thread that I was too close in.

The vis was great, about 6-7m.

Looking forward to getting back there! And out to Newhaven again!

Wyvern

6-7m viz? naah, can't be the same if you're not squinting through a pea souper. I'm not jealous, honest!

OK, so here she is - thanks guys for all the encouraging comments, much appreciated. I'm guessing a plaice? It's about 42cm long.

Looks like a flounder but to be honest, I think I need a closer look at it. Any chance I could pop by and pick it up for a closer inspection....in my kitchen? I promise to return it*.

David

Very Small Print - Don't bother reading...you're fine...just fine...
* "It" does not necessarily refer to the whole fish. As part of the rigorous testing sections or indeed all of the edible parts of the fish may be consumed. Should this be necessary, only the bones will be returned. All future fish caught by you, using whatever means, and in perpetuity, becomes the rightful property of BarnacleBoy in accordance with national laws that I made up just 5 minutes ago whilst typing.

Haha, that really tickled me. 

Thanks guys - poached him in milk, went down a treat. How do you know whether the roe is man bits or lady bits?

So, the gales are battering our southern shores at the moment...will there be any fish left when they stop? This is my first autumn of fishing, and it seems that the numbers mullet (particularly big individuals) have dropped right away, while the numbers of pollack and pout have increased. Shootable size bass were never a constant at my local Brighton spot, so I haven't noticed a particular change, though I haven't spotted any on my last few outings.

What can we expect as winter comes around? I know that the bass move into deeper water, but will whiting and cod fill the gap? And what do the pollack do?

On a more practical note, anyone keen to go for a night dive once the weather calms down? I'm guessing that west pier on a low neap would be pretty atmospheric even if there weren't any fish.

bobandsausage if im free i will join you on a night dive.just let me know when you going.

Yup me too, I'll need to sort myself out with a fairly decent torch first but I'm definitely up for it!

Not a turbot then?.

I'd go with flounder (they sometimes look like plaice in the water as they often have similar red spots, but then these spots fade shortly after they have been caught).

.

I'm not too ashamed to say I'm too wussy for night pier dives at this stage! :D

Enjoy it guys....and if you could shoo some bass over to Newhaven...and good visibility too..that'd be great.

BarnacleBoy (can I call you Barney ;)) if you stay close to shore night diving is pretty safe!
You are quite right to be cautious but, there is so much info on the forum to put you right & safe.
I am not a great lover of killing fish at night myself but the experience will thrill & excite you - even if you only do it once the memory will live for ever!

If you find a pier / spot that you know fairly well, i.e. You know there's no snagged nets or other problems, then a night dive isn't really different to a typical daytime dive, in terms of vis. In terms of sea life, there's way more about at night...
Go for it, just be safe too...

Nothing wussy about being cautious tho either.

Thanks for the encouragements and pointers gents, much appreciated. And for underlining the safety aspects! Hmm, change of plan - Palace Pier instead. Nothing to get snagged on, but lots of pier legs to know where you are and to hold on to in case of a current.

Cheers for the encouragement  I'll do one at some stage..I can see that it would be a cool experience as you say foxfish (barney's fine...or David (my name)). I like the idea of more activity too. I guess the lack of viz would be no different to Newhaven's soup like qualities.

Good point Jonny250 - I've not dived a pier yet....so maybe a go during the day first.

Has anyone seen what the vis is like this weekend? I wouldn't mind an outing if anyone else is around?

The wind is forecast to be pretty cheeky, and sea state moderate. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/marine/inshore_forecast.html#NorthForelandtoSelseyBill
That means pretty crap viz. The only possible saving grace is that it's mostly a north westerly - maybe a place suitably sheltered like Newhaven eastern arm? Or maybe further west, like the studland bay area?
Not sure about my weekend plans - maybe bunny culling on a friend's farm, or at a wedding on Saturday (not the same thing). But I might be game for a drive down to Dorset on Sunday if you want to share driving/ fuel?

I'll put a post on the dorset thread asking for a vis report, I'd hate to get all the way down there and there be sub 1m vis but in principle i'd be up for driving down there on the Sunday.
