When doing my static and dynamic (pb 3:40 & 75m) i have never had any contractions. At the end of my attempts I do get the urge to swallow. In the beginning about every ten seconds increasing to the end. When I have swallowed for some reason it becomes a little bit easier to hold my breath for couple of more seconds till the next urge to swallow comes. The intervals between swallows decreases near the end until I cannot hold my breath any any longer (burning lungs, no contractions).

Is it possible swallowing makes a difference and is an effective tool (for me)to postpone breathhold? Maybe because i don't get contrations I get this urge to swallow?

Does anyone have ideas about this??

I also think it could be a kind of contractions. Sometimes I get an urge to swallow towards the end of a hard static. If I give in to the urge and swallow, it makes the urge to breathe become excruciating for a moment, so I try not to do it! It would be better if it made things easier for me...

Hollander, I get the same thing, too, but quite rarely. I've always thought it was just a kind of contraction, or possibly the same contraction, but dealt with differently than most. I switch back and forth, depending upon my relaxation.

I thought we were discussing apnea...

I guess someone's going to have something to say about that too. ;)

At least she doesn't do the old Danny Thomas-style spit-take.

That is a way to trick the mind. It's somekind of reflex, like twitching lips, and this maneuvers prolong the easy phase of a breath-hold. I don't think this is a contraction, the contractions are diaphragmatic and abdominal contractions, and swallowing (stop that dirty mind  ) is quite different.

I don't have any own, direct, experience when it comes to swallowing. I've seen it, yes, but thats it.

There is a swallowing-refles, but is there a spitting-reflex as well?

Sara, with ALL your experince, do you know anything about this?

:yack

well neoprenelove... it depends on the taste... eating loads of cinnamon or drinking pineapple juice usually helps

36 calories a time apparently!! how long is that in the exercise bike???

on a more serious note... "the swallows" is something Howard Jones used to talk about as the first sign that you need to breathe. I get it and I find that if you resist the urge to swallow for as long as possible, that puts off the contractions a bit. Try relaxing the head and neck more and maybe not taking in as much air at the start of the static as it seems to kick in earlier if you are really full up of air. It also helps to have drunk lots of water as that keeps the throat lubricated. I usually keep a bottle by the edge of the pool. You could also try breathing up through your nose more as breathing through the mouth dries out the throat.

I find that if I do swallow, the contractions start properly soon afterwards.

now I have really opened myself up to some abuse I think!!!! watch it Sara!!!!
