wow.. i notice the same thing too.. even last nite while swimming in my pool.. i notice when i come near the end of my personal time.. i get the urge to swallow... so i just swallow (without sucking in water.. just the throat motion)..
Back on track...

I do this sometimes during statics, which causes water to go in my nose because I don't use a nose clip. I still prefer this to using a mask or nose clip though.

More on swallowing during apnea... (The link is OK, trust me, it's safe to open at home or work! We're talking freediving this time!)

____any time it gets a few scratches off the rocks. Mine came with lin seed oil so I simply wash my hands, pour a bit into my palm then give it a good massage, she loves it when I treat her good after she has taken a beating

I go diving for one day and I find you guys (and gals!) having a 4 page thread about hmm.. swallowing?

Do you know what is the difference between love, true love and admiration?

Spit, swallow and gargle.

A serious  answer to the initial question......

At the end of my attempts I do get the urge to swallow. In the beginning about every ten seconds increasing to the end. When I have swallowed for some reason it becomes a little bit easier to hold my breath for couple of more seconds till the next urge to swallow comes. The intervals between swallows decreases near the end until I cannot hold my breath any any longer (burning lungs, no contractions).
Is it possible swallowing makes a difference and is an effective tool (for me)to postpone breathhold? Maybe because i don't get contrations I get this urge to swallow?
Does anyone have ideas about this??

Swallowing suppresses the urge to breathe. The respiratory centre of the medulla is directly inhibited by the swallowing centre for the very brief time that it takes to swallow. This is known as "deglutition apnoea".

Actually.. if you read the postings carefully... there are two candidates who seem to know lots about this..
