Some years ago me and a mate fired our spearguns (without line attatched )out into a field to see how far the spear would go ,as a way of comparing / measuring power , today there is no 'rating ' system for power ,eg foot per second or range ,but generally if it takes a lot of effort to load it should have more power .

Out of interest, what size gun/bands and how far did they go?
Wouldn't dare try- especially after seeing that video! Hope you didn't get the same result!

To be honest i can't remember as it was years ago ,but the spears ended up about 30 metres or so away from us when the gun was angled about 45 degrees into the air (range is one thing but accuracy was not good but we were only trying to compare guns really !

Lol fair enough, i guess thats a fair distance, I had an image of them launching a spear miles! I'd like to see how far one of those huge tuna cannons could carry it.......

if you are going to spearfish in far flung areas don`t forget your mask( it sucks happened to me) for three days i used our host`s wooden goggles can get down to 15 feet and the only way i can hit fish is by closing one eye (problem with double vision in deeper water if you use goggles) :)

Tip of the Day

Probably been covered before, but the best antifog agent i've used is toothpaste, mjuch better and cheaper than anything you'll buy in a dive shop,.
Put a pea sized blob in each side of your mask and rub in with some watewr then rinse, works a treat.

Bro's Tip of the Day:

On a night dive, even if all you do is float around on the surface in shallow water, never be tempted to leave you weights at home!

You'll soon find out that with spearing fins on, you'll do more 'flopping about' on the surface than actual swimming plus trying to grab a lobster is all but impossible ;)

Buy some WD40 and squirt it into your trigger mechanism after each session, this stops it from jamming up or releasing the shaft prematurely......isn't that right Tye???

Do not buy 'Beaver' branded dive knives, specifically the 'Ranger' model. 420 Stainless my arse, it went rusty after 1 session despite washing well after use! Sort of related, check your knife after every dive in case it has fallen out its holster!

Absolutely. I did this the other night. Left my weights at home and thought "ah well, I'm only going to be on the surface anyway". Turns out it's really hard to keep your fins under the surface without a good amount of lead!

When hunting bass in "really!" shallow water, you may find yourself clambouring over rocks just below the waterline. Safety your gun or unband it as a slight (seemingly to me anyway) knock on the handle from a gun released the spear... broke the surface and shot across the bay...

When night diving with a torch that takes the 18650 batteries, only use the following battery brands: torchy senybor and Panasonic. Ultra fire, true fire or any 'fire' are really crap.

I have ultra fire 5300mh batts which last 15 mins in my Do6 torch...also have torchy and senybor 2400mh batts which last 3-4 hours.

So there you have it... There is no such thing as cheap good powerful batteries. Just cheap crap or reasonable priced fantastic and reliable batteries.

You can get torchy batts from eBay.....some guy from Scotland big...ffd or something like that, mr lizard or scooby will know.

I may be wrong but I think Panasonic make the senybor battery as well and it's rebranded. The Torchy may be the same?

On a night dive, get a micro tip light (snap light) that they use for angling on top of floats. Tape it to the end of your spear before the barb...bass love it snd so do garfish and john dorys.......your a bit like a human angler fish!!!

I recently bought some 7mm neoprene socks to wear this winter.

I was finding it very hard to fit my feet into the foot pockets whilst wearing the socks - my fins are the next size up for me.

By removing the sock & placing the sock into the fin pocket first, pushing the sock sole to the edges of the pocket, it was much easier to put the fin on with the sock already in there.

It left me with a bit of room to wriggle my toes. If I tried wearing the socks first my feet would have been too compressed when I squeezed them into the pocket.

if you own a sit on top, get a small 4 prong folding anchor, 1.5kg should be plenty, and 30m of nylon. tie one end to the back of the yak (i had mine just behind the seat so you can reach it whilst sitting) and the other to the anchor/grapple. if you don't own a sit on, get a sit on. oh and don't get the cheapest one on ebay, i did and it just about works but for anyone over 65kg, far too small, unstable and not that fast.
